Miranda MacDonald: Hi, I’m Miranda MacDonald. I’m here with Rogers’ Mike Nguyen to take a closer look at two new exciting devices from Sony Ericsson, the Xperia arc and Xperia PLAY. Adding to Rogers growing lineup of Android smartphones, both devices will be available exclusively from Rogers. We know that both devices are Android smartphones and people are really passionate about this platform, what makes Android so popular?

Mike Nguyen: Rogers recognizes that Android is a growing force within the wireless industry, so we have invested heavily within the platform. We were the first carrier to bring Android to Canada in 2009. We’re really excited to bring both these devices Android 2.3 smartphones to Canada.

Miranda MacDonald: Let’s start by looking at the Xperia arc. Can you talk about some of the device features?

Mike Nguyen: The Xperia arc at 8.7mm right in the middle is the thinnest smartphone that we have launched-to-date – that’s exciting. It’s also is the first smartphone to feature Sony’s mobile BRAVIA technology. This is the same technology that they feature in their TV’s and this is the first smartphone to feature that.

Miranda MacDonald: Is there anything else about the Xperia arc that makes it unique?

Mike Nguyen: Yes, it comes embedded with urMusic right on your home screen so you get the latest music titles pushed to your device. It also features a really cool app called Google Goggles. I am not sure if you have seen this before. You may have seen devices that can take a business card that can scan it into your phone or your computer. Google Goggles takes this one step further where if I have a Suduko puzzle which I can’t solve. I can quickly take a picture of it. Google will scan the image and it will ask if I want Google to solve the Suduko for me. That is a whole new way to connect information with your smartphone. We haven’t seen that before, pretty incredible

Miranda MacDonald: Very cool! Let’s switch over and talk about the Xperia PLAY. This one is a neat device which has a slide-out gaming console. Can you talk a bit about that?

Mike Nguyen: Yes, the Xperia PLAY is highly anticipated within the gaming community. It is the first smartphone to feature Playstation’s Certified gaming controls. It comes with your own menu of games that have been specifically designed for the Xperia PLAY and we’re happy to announce it will launch with six games pre-loaded. Really excited titles as Madden, FiFa 10, Crash Bandicoot. You can tell here from the gameplay that it is a true gaming experience. It comes with a fantastic graphics card and a really powerful processor. It really does take mobile gaming to a whole new level.

Miranda MacDonald: Great gaming experience but also a smartphone as well. What other features come packed into the Xperia PLAY?

Mike Nguyen: Google has invested in voice recognition technology. What that allows me to do is that it makes my life really easy. I can say for example, “directions to the Rogers Centre.” It will recognize exactly what I have said and instantly take me into Google Maps and to give me turn-by turn directions from where I am to the Rogers Centre.

Miranda MacDonald: Both really exciting devices. Thanks a lot for the demo Mike.
