Miranda MacDonald: Hi am Miranda MacDonald, today its not just about high-speed internet its about having fast reliable connection that allows you to connect multiple devices and do more on line. To talk about what the future of internet has in-store, and how that may affect your life, I am joined today by futurist Frank Feather. Hi Frank!
Frank Feather: Hi Miranda
MM: You coined the term “webolution”, so what does that mean?
FF: It means the internet revolution but it’s more the technology of it. It’s about all the social change and economic change that’s going to come with it, just as came from the industrial revolution.
MM: So what comes next?
FF: I think we are going to find that our homes are going to become more and more connected online and with the internet, as part of the internet in essence. So for example, the more that we set up websites or blogs or work from home or whatever it might be, especially if you are running a home business from home you have your own website. Your home in effect gets its own web address, and this interconnects us inside the home and externally to the world. So you are able to do many more things thank you could do before. So for example in a very simplistic way, lets say you are not at home, you can check on the safety and security of your home just using your cell phone, you can make the doors are locked, you can even see who is ringing the door bell maybe trying to get in and if its an expected guest you allow them in. You could adjust the thermostat, things of that nature. You become totally connected with things that you own, including your home property and the people with whom you interact.
MM: Rogers now offers the Docsis 3.0 for super fast internet speeds, what do you think of this technology?
FF: This is a super leap forward, so you can download an MP3 in the blink of an eye, you can download a 2 hour movie in less than 2 minute which is faster than what it would take you to make the popcorn. So you are getting things done very fast. Also all members of the family can be doing something online at the same time, listening to music, playing a game, watching a video all simultaneously, because the ban width is much bigger not just the speed of it. So this is really a super improvement on what we can expect and I am sure you will continue to improve going forward.
MM: How do you think technology like this contributes to the ongoing internet revolution?
FF: I think it becomes, it makes the internet much more part of life, almost like part of the furniture so to speak, in the same way as microwave ovens became part of the furniture we just take them for granted. You know our automobiles we take for granted, we just go and use them. The internet is going to be the same way as we have used the telephone in the past or whatever. But, it integrates and provides us with totally different tool that we didn’t have before. Initially the internet was very simple very slow, very tedious, very text based and people started to use it if you remember for writing letters, for sending faxes, replacing phone calls, now it’s a multi media thing, with not just voice or text but you have got music, pictures you can share with people, videos you can share, videos you can download and watch. So it is a total multi medium that’s going to allow people, I think, to live what I call a web lifestyle. There’s all kinds of different options people will have available using this kind of technology.
MM: Frank Feather thanks a lot for your insight. You’ve definitely given us some interesting food for thought.
FF: You’re welcome thank you!
