2011 year in review: top 5 favourite posts
Well, that’s a wrap. 2011 is nearly done and we’ve had a great year here on RedBoard! We’ve covered everything from the iPhone 4S launch to the Royal Wedding and welcomed some new writers into the mix. To mark the end of a great year, we’re recapping our top 5 favourite posts of 2011.
- My Day as a Rogers Android: Our own @RogersMelanie got to live a childhood dream. On October 26, she dressed as the Android mascot at Android TO, Canada’s largest Android conference, and entertained more than 600 attendees throughout the day. To mark the momentous occasion, we filmed a video of her once-in-a-lifetime experience which generated more than 10,000 views.
- Canada’s first LTE network is live: Where were you the day Rogers launched Canada’s first LTE network? I was in Ottawa – the first city in Canada to experience LTE – to show off the capabilities of the latest global wireless technology at a launch event. On that day, we also announced that LTE would be coming to Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. And on September 28, we officially launched Rogers LTE in those cities.
- RedBoard Celebrates one year anniversary: On March 2, our blog turned 1. To mark this milestone, we held our first Tweetup in Toronto and invited RedBoard readers to come out and celebrate with us. For those outside the city, we held a contest to win RedBoard loot bags. We’re looking forward to celebrating our second birthday next year, as well as a first birthday for FilRouge, our new French blog, which launched in September of this year.
- Rogers launches new early upgrade offer: On May 6, we announced an early upgrade promotion that allows you to upgrade your device as early as six months into your existing contract term. We know many of our readers here on RedBoard are the kind of people that want the latest gadget as soon as it’s available. We were happy to offer this new option to provide our customers with this added freedom and flexibility.
- Rogers Innovation Report: top technology predictions for 2012: Just over a week ago, we launched the first Rogers Innovation Report, a regular report we’ll be doing to get Canadians views on technology. The best part? The infographic. This visual display of our findings revealed interesting statistics like the number of Canadians who sleep with their smartphones or have the urge to take them to the bathroom!
On behalf of the RedBoard team, we’d like to wish you a happy new year, and all the best in 2012. We’re looking forward to another great year.
Are there any topics you’d like to see us cover in 2012?

This year, we’ve made it easier for customers to get the devices you want. Here’s what you need to know to get your hands on the Apple iPhone 4S at Rogers:
How can I reserve a device?
Our existing wireless customers have the opportunity to reserve their devices in advance, through our Rogers Reservation System. Starting today, Rogers wireless customers can go to Rogers.com and log in to their MyRogers account to secure their place “in line” to own one of this year’s most anticipated devices.
A $40 (+ taxes) refundable reservation fee will be applied to hold the device. It will be shipped to the location of your choice and we’ll let you know when it arrives. For all the details, check out this recent post from RedBoard about the Rogers Reservation System.
How do I upgrade my existing device?
Earlier this year, we made it easier for all customers to upgrade to the latest device of their choice. Our new “early upgrade” program gives you the added freedom and flexibility to upgrade your device as early as six months into your existing contract term.
How can I check my eligibility for a device upgrade?
We will soon launch an online tool to help you calculate your hardware upgrade. Keep an eye on @RogersBuzz for details.
That’s all the information we have right now, but stay tuned to RedBoard and follow us on Twitter for the latest updates.
UPDATE (October 12, 2011, 4:30 p.m): We’ve launched our online tool to help you calculate your hardware upgrade. This new early hardware upgrade program makes it possible to upgrade to a new device as early as six months into your current term. Here are a couple of things you need to know:
- In order to upgrade to the new iPhone 4S, you will need to purchase it with a new three-year agreement on eligible Voice and Data plans (or renew your current plan, if eligible).
- All consumers who upgrade on an eligible three-year voice and data plan automatically qualify for a $50 mail-in rebate. You can get your coupon in store through a rep or online at Rogers.com once you have processed your hardware upgrade. The $50 mail-in rebate is in place for all existing, eligible customers upgrading to any device on three-year terms.
- Mail your coupon in within 30 days of your upgrade and the rebate will appear on your Rogers invoice as a $50 credit.
To find out your eligibility, visit www.rogers.com/iPhone4S.
Remember, pricing, eligibility and offers are subject to change.

Rogers to invest $80 million in wireless network in the Maritimes
Good news for Canadians in the Maritimes: Rogers will invest $80 million to expand the 4G HSPA+ network in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. This will mean better signal strength, faster downloads and more device selection to nearly 1 million more Maritimers, representing a 130% increase over the current population coverage.
By the time work is complete, Rogers 4G HSPA+ network will cover 94% of the Maritime population meaning people in these provinces will be able to get their hands on the latest devices including Android, iPhone, BlackBerry and tablets, all with faster data speeds and stronger signal strength.
When will upgrades begin?
We’ll begin work on the wireless network later this month. New coverage areas will be announced throughout the construction period, which will continue throughout 2012.
If you live in the Maritimes, what new devices are you interested in getting?

What you want when you want it: upgrade early with Rogers
Can’t wait to get your hands on the new Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY? Marking off the calendar days until you can upgrade to a new BlackBerry Torch?
That day could be today.
Rogers upgrade options have offered you the advantage of being able to upgrade your device before your contract ends. Our new “early upgrade” promotion allows you the added freedom and flexibility to upgrade your device as early as six months into your existing contract term.
How Does this Work?
An early upgrade fee is a one-time fee based on the device type you currently own and how many months you have until you’re eligible for new customer pricing under the current standard upgrade offer. Customers who do not want to upgrade early are still entitled to upgrade their hardware at the discounted device price before the end of their 3-year term, depending on eligibility under the current standard upgrade offers.
Under this new early upgrade promotion, the following fees will be used to determine the one-time early upgrade fee and refer to a customer’s current device (the one from which they’re upgrading):
- $10 per month for voice or quick messaging devices
- $15 per month for select smartphones, tablets and other eligible devices (i.e sticks, hubs)
- $20 per month for premium devices (I.e iPhone 4 and BlackBerry Torch)
Let’s Break That Down
Here is an example of an early upgrade offer: Jack is 20 months into a 3-year term on his Acer Liquid E and he really wants a new Samsung Nexus S. Instead of waiting 10 months until he is eligible to upgrade his device at a discounted price ($99.99), Jack can add $150 to the new customer price ($15 per month based on his current device x 10 months) to upgrade to the device at $249.99 on a new 3-year term (compared with $549.99 for the no-term price).
Pricing, eligibility and offers are subject to change so it’s always best to visit a local Rogers retail location where a customer service representative can check your eligibility. This new early upgrade offer applies to our entire lineup and replaces special device specific hardware upgrade offers we’ve had in the past, such as the iPhone 4 early upgrade offer.
Will you consider an early upgrade? We would love to hear your feedback in the comments below but please note that we cannot answer individual upgrade eligibility questions. Customers who are interested in an upgrade to a new device should visit a local Rogers retail location.
