Fashion fabulous with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from Rogers

Toronto Fashion Week 2012

A picture from Toronto Fashion Week taken by Jack Harding using the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. More pictures in the gallery below!

Inside access. That’s what Jack Harding, from Oh Wow You Wore That has. Inside access to Toronto’s Fashion Week and a demo of the new Samsung Galaxy Note 2, now available at Rogers locations. Check out what Jack had to say about fashion week and his first experience with an Android device below:

Tell us about Toronto Fashion Week, what was your favourite moment?

Toronto Fashion Week is always a fantastic opportunity for me. I find that it is such a great place to gather people from various sectors within the industry to all work together for one common goal (and that is to put on a show). You get to see old friends and new, and you get to see not only fantastic style on the attendees, but you get to see new looks come down the runway for the following season. I think though if I had to choose my favorite moment it was the Bustle show. Known for fun shows, this year was unlike any other. With a great Safari theme, and models with a fantastic sense of humor, it was definitely a show not to be missed.

You got to preview a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 smartphone for the week. What was your favourite feature?

Having the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 for a week made me realize I did not want to give it back. It didn’t just have one feature that I liked, but it had many features that I LOVED. The camera burst feature which allowed me to take 20 photos at a time over a period of a few seconds was great for runway shots. The note function allowed me to scribble down things fast and it was great at recognizing my hand-writing. It was also really intuitive. With different motion controls and fantastic word recognition, this phone was amazing.

How do you like the Android platform?

I never used to like the Android platform, but after this, I am a total convert. Everything is made to fit the needs of the user, and it is adjustable to whatever you want the phone to do. I like that opposed to other operating systems which pigeon hole you into certain functions and only one set of functionalities.

What did you notice about the Rogers LTE Network?

What I noticed about the Rogers LTE Network was that I have never had an internet connection on a phone so fast in my life. I had my photos instantly being shared with dropbox, and I was tweeting away, and I was using the internet and GPS tracking devices all at the same time, and I never had my phone slow down, never had the internet slow down, and I noticed that it was always super speedy no matter what time of the day it was.

How did the Samsung Note 2 smartphone enhance your experience at Toronto Fashion Week?

The Samsung Galazy Note 2 made Toronto Fashion Week so much easier for me. The device is convenient and gave me access to my email, my texts, my calls, my camera, my social media networks and my drop box. I went from carrying a bag with everything I needed to merely this phone. It took such beautiful images that I couldn’t believe a smartphone could do, and it even allowed me to be able to update my website from the device, making on the spot site updates a breeze. This is truly a techy, a blogger, and a media mavens best friend.

Are you excited to see Psy perform Gangnam Style tonight at the Kool Haus?

I’ve been ranting and raving about being able to see Psy and watch him perform at the Kool Haus. It is going to be such an amazing performance and is looking to be like a stunning night overall. I cannot wait.

Happy Halloween! Make way for the Pumpkin Patrol & a frightastic line-up of scary movies

Happy Halloween from RogersFall means three things to me – bright, crunchy leaves, the return of pumpkin spice lattes… and HALLOWEEN! Being a huge scary movie buff, I couldn’t wait to check out what Rogers Anyplace TV and Rogers on Demand were offering to get in the spirit this year. And the best part is there’s something for everyone with our lineup.

Rogers Anyplace TV made it easy to spot some of the classics under their “Spooky Cinema section,” with everything from the gory, to funny, to the supernatural. Here you’ll find all 5 of the Saw movies, as well as timeless thrillers like Poltergeist, The Exorcist, and The Shining.

If you’re looking for newer horror flicks, check out recent thrillers Cabin in the Woods, and The Raven, spun from the classic Edgar Allan Poe poem. If you’re seeking a chuckle in between screams, don’t miss Johnny Depp’s quirky comedy Dark Shadows.

Then there’s our Family & Kids collection, where kids can watch some of their favourite TV characters in their Halloween themed episodes, including the Scooby Doo mysteries. Find out what Scooby and the gang are up to and help them solve the Halloween mysteries together.

As much fun as Halloween is with all the movies, candy and costumes, it’s important to remember it’s also a night when extra safety precautions should be taken. That’s why Rogers will be patrolling the streets for the 28th consecutive year with the Pumpkin Patrol. Each year, hundreds of Rogers employees volunteer to patrol neighbourhoods across Ontario and parts of Eastern Canada in our easily recognizable red cable vans. It’s our way of keeping Halloween safe for the children in the areas we serve.

You should also check out the pumpkinpatrol.com website for even more goodies, including games for the kids and safety tips for the big night. Think you’re prepared for no tricks, all treats? Then take the Pumpkin Patrol quiz for fun!

I’m off to pick up some treats for all the little ghouls and goblins headed my way shortly – have a safe and spooky Halloween everyone!

To quote another famous horror movie, “what’s your favourite scary movie?”

UPDATE (October 31, 2012, 4:52 p.m): Here’s a video of our own RogersCarly talking about Pumpkin Patrol on BT Toronto this morning. Check it out for some tips on how to keep kids safe while they’re out trick-or-treating tonight! Happy Halloween!

All-night at Nuit Blanche with Motorola RAZR HD LTE from Rogers

Photograher Alex Evans brought the new Motorola RAZR HD LTE smartphone out with him for Nuit Blanche, Toronto’s all-night art celebration, to see what he could capture. See what Alex had to say about his experience with the new device and check out some photos in the gallery below:

You got to preview a Motorola RAZR HD LTE smartphone during Nuit Blanche. What was your favourite feature?

My favourite feature would be the large, colourful and bright display. The colours of photographs looked much more accurate, vivid and clear than they do on my current phone.

What activity did you use the RAZR for the most? How was it?

The camera! Definitely! The large display made the photo taking experience all that much better. The feature I enjoyed most on the camera was the Burst mode which let you take several photos in a matter of seconds, and then later you can pick the best one out of the bunch from your gallery. Really useful when taking photos in low lighting or at night…

How do you like the Android platform?

As a first time user of the Android platform I expected a lot of confusion to come, but it was actually quite user friendly. There was never a time where I found myself completely lost. The phone ran smoothly at all times.

How did the Motorola RAZR smartphone enhance your experience at Nuit Blanche?

From the super fast internet (super useful to quickly find the location of some of the art installations) to the great camera packed with useful features (such as the panorama or burst modes), and to the long and reliable battery life (over six hours of continuous use), the RAZR was a great companion to bring along to Nuit Blanche.

The Motorola RAZR HD LTE is now available at Rogers locations and is the latest addition to our lineup of LTE devices which is the largest selection of LTE devices in Canada.

To learn more about the features of this device, check out our hands-on video with Stephanie, our Rogers data girl on our YouTube channel, here.

Did you visit Nuit Blanche this year? What was your favourite art project?

Tablet 101 with Rogers

Last week, Rogers hosted 15 bloggers to talk about how a tablet, such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE could help make their hectic lives a little easier. They chatted about everything from sharing their calendars to whether technology, such as tablets, belongs in the household. Using Storify, a social curating tool, we captured the best of what they had to say. Check it out:

Ten minutes with Toby Turner

Toby Turner in Toronto

CamMi Pham, right, with Toby Turner and her sister Havi.

Toby Turner’s first Canadian appearance was an #EpicWin!

Last week, Rogers brought the YouTube star up to Canada to perform live on stage at Toronto’s Elgin Theatre and promote our new Rogers Student Bundle. Tickets to the event were free, and Toby performed his unique brand of comedy to hundreds of fans who lined up to see him. He was so excited about coming to Canada, he even made a video about his trip.

Fashion blogger CamMi Pham was able to go backstage and talk with Toby for 10 minutes. We caught up with CamMi after the meet and greet to see what she thought about the man behind the videos:

Q. You got to go backstage and meet Toby. Tell me what that was like.

A.  It was not what I expected at all. In social media, a lot of people have two personalities:One online and one offline. Most of the time, the person that you see online is not real. I expected Toby to be another diva who only talks about himself. I was wrong. Toby Turner is more friendly and down-to-earth than many other social media people I know. He taught me a great branding lesson: Be yourself and make people feel special and like they are your best friends. The YouTube star gave me a big giant hug and talked to me like we had known each other forever.

Q. Did you have a favourite part of the show? What was it?

A.  Toby Turner is an amazing singer. I didn’t expect him to sing so well. I adore his voice and recorded a few of his songs.

Q. What did Toby tell you that really stuck out for you?

A. I asked him “If you were trapped on a deserted island with a YouTube of your choice who would it be?” I thought he would pick a fun and cute YouTuber to be with him. He actually thought about it and wanted to take the one with the best survival skills.  Behind a funny YouTube show, there is a really smart and practical man.

Q. What most surprised you about this experience?

A. Of course, how pretty Toby is! Just kidding. While Toby is much more adorable in real life, my biggest surprise is the power of the Internet. There were hundreds of screaming teenagers waiting to meet an online celebrity. If you had told me this 10 years ago, I would laugh. The Internet gives normal people so much more power to influence others. I feel like I need to be more responsible with my online activities. Everything I do will impact someone in some way.

Q. What will you remember most?

A. I learned so much about personal branding from him. I am not his target audience but he managed to turn me into his fan.

Q. Toby Turner is known as a YouTube sensation. Are there any YouTube subscribers you like to follow?

A. I follow Wendy from Wendy’s Lookbook. Her videos are amazing and I adore her bubbly personality.

Q. Do you use YouTube as part of your online presence? Why or why not?

A. Right now I am not on YouTube. It is a lot of work to put together a YouTube channel. I really admire all the YouTubers out there. I had always thought YouTube is not social enough. However, I am hoping to launch a Hangouts show in the near future. Google+ Hangouts makes video becomes so much more interactive. Video is the future of the internet, and I want to be part of it!

Here’s a clip from Toby’s show at the Elgin, filmed by CamMi:

Introducing Anson Liaw: Rogers public gallery artist

Rogers Public Gallery artist Anson Liaw

Anson Liaw poses beside his artwork along with members of the staff of the Rogers store located at 764 Yonge Street in Toronto. From left to right is Diamond Osoteo, Mervin Aleman, Matthew Schmidt, Anson Liaw, Chase Crawford and Raya Dikova

Meet Anson Liaw. This Toronto-based illustrator/artist has been doodling, drawing and painting since he was just 2 years old. After graduating from the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) in 1989, he’s been involved in dozens of projects ranging from magazine and book publications to corporate and advertising communications.

His latest project? A giant mural, prominently displayed at our new Rogers store at Yonge and Bloor in Toronto. This piece of art is part of the new Rogers Public Gallery, a community project where we feature the work of local artists on a “public canvas” in three Rogers stores in Toronto and Barrie.

The art is in the form of an oversized picture frame located at the front of the stores. Artists are invited to submit images based on a set of criteria, which changes regularly. If selected, the artist will receive a one-time honorarium and the piece will be displayed in-store for up to 6 months.

For the first image, Anson was asked to submit an image that embodies the core Toronto Blue Jays personality and values such as integrity, passion for winning and teamwork. Anson’s piece, entitled Foundation of Dreams to Reality, is designed to commemorate the commitment of the Jays Care Foundation to communities across Canada . His style is said to have “a graphic, yet painterly style coupled with concept and design thinking.” These qualities, according to Anson, are the key to visually telling a story.

Anson has received loads of recognition and awards for his work including being named one of Luerzer’s ARCHIVE 200 best illustrators. When he’s not designing beautiful artwork for our retail locations, Anson teaches at OCAD. To check out more of Anson’s work, go to www.illoz.com/liaw

Interested in being part of Rogers Public Gallery?

If you are interested in participating in the program, send an email to publicgallery@rci.rogers.com requesting  more information. We’ll send details about criteria and technical requirements.

You can also ask the staff at any of the stores that have the public gallery as part of their store design. The three stores are located at the Toronto Eaton Centre, Yonge and Bloor (764 Yonge Street) and Georgian Mall in Barrie.

Infographic of the Week

Seems like yesterday we were celebrating Mother’s Day, and now Father’s Day is right around the corner! Mashable released another interesting infographic this week on how tech savvy today’s dad’s are, and we thought it might be a good share with our readers. One example we found interesting – when it comes to social media, what do first-time dads share online? 42% post family updates a few times a week, with 56% of those being photos and 21% being videos. Who knew dad was so shutter-happy?! More fun stats on today’s dads here.
