Lying in a hammock. Lazing on dock. Soaking up the rays on a pool deck or the sand. Waiting at the airport. We’ve all got summer on the brain, and the season presents so many opportunities to get lost in a good read. Whether you like to curl up with the good old fashioned paper variety or prefer downloading the latest titles to your ereader, the RogersBuzz team is sharing their favourite beach reads to help inspire your vacation book picks.
@RogersKeith: The TV series Game of Thrones drew me in to George R. R. Martin’s immersive world and the books didn’t disappoint. They’re big fat summer novels with maps and character charts. Start with A Game of Thrones and work your way through the series. By the end of the summer, you’ll be 5,000 pages in and desperately longing for Martin to finish book number six.
@RogersJenW Every summer I get inspired to revisit the classics, and Pride and Prejudice remains one of my all-time favourites. I love getting lost in the familiar love story of stubborn Lizzie and too-proud Mr. Darcy, who in my mind always looks like Colin Firth … And as for a new read, I can’t wait to pick up the Gillian Flynn thriller Gone Girl – I’ve heard it’s enthralling enough to make waiting at the airport just fly by.
@RogersMary: I like to lighten-up in the summer and read books that are fun and maybe just a bit romantic. My favourite author right now is @TinaReber who wrote Love Unscripted and the follow-up Love Unrehearsed. Definitely swoon-worthy and perfect for the beach or lazy summer nights. This summer, I’m looking forward to adding some suspense and have heard that Three Graves Full is a must-read.
@RogersSarahM: Classic summer read: Anything from the Shopaholic series, but especially the first three books: Adventures of a Shopaholic, Shopaholic takes Manhattan and Shopaholic Ties the Knot. This summer, I’m looking forward to Sophie Kinsella’s new book, Wedding Night, and Lauren Weisberger’s Revenge Wears Prada, the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada.
And you can pack all these titles away for your cottage weekend with an ereader. For a limited time, activate a new smartphone on a new line with a three-year term and you could be eligible to get a free Kindle Paperwhite 3G. For full details, see www.rogers.com/kindleoffer.
To reward our loyal RedBoard and FilRouge fans, we’re giving one lucky reader a Kindle Paperwhite 3G and a brand new Sony Xperia ZL smartphone – with a five-inch HD display and a 13 MP camera – which is launching on rogers.com and at Rogers retail locations today. The Kindle Paperwhite 3G features a built in light, eight-week battery life and storage for up to 1,100 books.

We have some exciting news to share – today, with Sony, we announced that the 3G PlayStation® Vita will be coming to Canada this October.
Why are we excited? Well, it means that gaming on-the-go just got a whole lot better. It’s a whole new experience allowing you to always remain connected to your game and your friends wherever you go with a wireless connection versus only having a WiFi connection.
It’s also going to be easy to set up your wireless connection. As a 3G PlayStation® Vita owner, you can easily activate a data package directly from your PlayStation Vita through a seamless payment interface that will accept your credit card.
Depending on how much you want to play and connect on the go, we will offer two data packages on a month-to-month basis with no long term contract. Two plans will be available at launch including:
- 250 MB for $15.00, 30-day package which starts at the date and time of purchase
- 5 GB for $35, 30-day package which starts at the date and time of purchase
You can read details about gaming and social networking features developed specifically for the system here.
The PlayStation Vita 3G/Wi-Fi model will be available at major electronics retailers in Canada on October 2 for $299.99. Rogers data packages are priced separately and will be available on a month-to-month basis.
As we get closer to launch date, we’ll share additional details on the availability of the device. In the meantime, visit www.playstation.ca for more information on the 3G-enabled lineup for PlayStation Vita.

For Weekend Getaways

- The Rocket mobile hotspot will keep you connected whether you’re on the road, exploring around town, or even on the dock or boat. Simply turn on this battery-powered, pocket-sized device and you’ve created a password-protected Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 10 Wi-Fi devices—from laptops to Wi-Fi tablets, from music players to eReaders and more.

Is there anything we can’t do on smartphones these days? Remember when cell phones were strictly used as a means to make calls or be reached on the go? Fast forward to 2012 and think about all they’re capable of: web, mobile payments, video calls, GPS, apps and more. It’s really no surprise that Network World released an article this month on smartphones phasing out some of our other technology.
In it, a recent study conducted by European telecom O2 found that of their respondents, 54% of alarm clocks and 46% of watches were the devices most frequently pushed aside by smartphones. 28% had even started to abandon laptop computers in favor of their handhelds. For more stats and predictions, check out the full article here.
Staying on top of this trend, this week we added another great smartphone to our lineup: the Sony Xperia ion, available exclusively from Rogers! This LTE enabled smartphone comes with unrestricted access to the Sony Entertainment Network, making it an entertainment junkie’s dream.
It also comes pre-loaded with Sony Video Unlimited and Sony Music Unlimited, for a monthly fee that allows users access to the latest movies, TV shows and music tracks right from your phone! You can order yours online today or you can check out more details on our RedBoard post from earlier this week here. Also, take a look at this review from Canadian Reviewer for a good overview of the phone features.

If you’re an entertainment junkie, or a music lover like me, the Sony Xperia ion, Sony’s new LTE Android 2.3 smartphone, can be your unrestricted ticket to the Sony Entertainment Network. Recently, I had the chance to play with this device and my favourite feature is definitely the 4.6” HD screen as I love watching content on my device or connecting it to a big screen TV. It also comes pre-loaded with Sony Video Unlimited and Sony Music Unlimited, for a monthly fee that allows me to easily access the latest Hollywood blockbusters, TV shows and millions of music tracks from my favourite artists.
Packed with a premium 12MP fast capture camera, Shutterbugs will definitely love the quick launch feature of this device which is designed to help catch those unexpected video moments whether you’re using either the rear 1080p or front-facing 720p cameras.
Stay tuned for a great demo video of the device from our data guyz to see the device in action. The Sony Xperia ion is exclusively available first at Rogers retail locations. Check Rogers.com for more details and activate the device today and take advantage of our promotional Super Plan.
