Let’s go to the movies: Rogers On Demand Online celebrates film festivals

Rogers on Demand Online Festival FlicksOver the years, I’ve been lucky enough to attend a few big movie premiers. Back in 1994, I was in the same room with Robert Englund, the horror legend you may know better as Freddie Krueger, for the debut of Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, which was pretty cool for a horror fan like me.

While there’s nothing quite like the glitz and glamour of a big time movie premiere, there’s also a lot to be said about watching movies in the comfort of your own home. Not only is Rogers On Demand Online a great place to catch up on any of your favourite tv shows you may have missed, it’s also your one stop destination for movie streaming on the web with the Rogers On Demand Rentals Store. Along with new titles on the day they’re released (typically Tuesday if you’re looking for them), we also have special themes that we run to tie in with everything from holidays to movie stars to special events.

In the case of September, we’re featuring some critically acclaimed festival flicks that we know you’ll want to check out.

Some consider Apocalypse Now to be one of the greatest war films of all time, while others simply site it as one of greatest films, period. Starring Martin Sheen, Marlon Brandon, Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper (along with a blink and you’ll miss it appearance by Harrison Ford), the film debuted at Cannes back in 1979 and received a huge reaction. Some twenty years later, director Francis Ford Coppola added footage that was originally edited out for various reasons and created Apocalypse Now Redux, making a great movie even better. If you’ve never seen either version, get comfortable and check it out now.

Bill Murray is often regarded as simply a comedic actor, but the man is incredibly versatile. For proof, look no further than Lost In Translation, co-starring a then 18-year old Scarlett Johansson as a woman who meets an aging movie star when both wind up in Tokyo. When Lost In Translation debuted at the Telluride Film Festival back in 2003, it immediately created a buzz, thanks to the poignant performances from Murray and Johansson and the subtle direction of Sophia Coppola (daughter of Francis). Made for just $4 million, Lost In Translation wound up grossing nearly $120 million worldwide, an amazing accomplishment for a small but gorgeous film.

Another solid and interesting rental on Rogers On Demand Online is Blindness, which was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2008. The film, about a sudden epidemic of blindness that effects society, features a knockout cast, including Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover and beloved Canadian actor Maury Chaykin. The film is fairly dark, but it’s also an intriguing concept anchored by a strong script by Canadian Don McKellar (who adapted Blindness from the book of the same name).

If none of the above appeal to you, there are a lot more festival flicks for you to peruse on Rogers On Demand Online, or choose from our huge selection of New Releases for some of the biggest Hollywood hits from the last few months.  Next time, I’ll let you know all about the free films we have on the site as well.

What one film can you watch over and over without ever getting bored?

RedBoard video: Tennis superstar Milos Raonic on tech, Twitter and the pro tour

The Rogers Cup is around the corner and with names like Nadal, Federer, Sharapova and the Williams sisters on the schedule, you can guarantee some intense battles. The world’s top 25 women are set to compete in Toronto and the top 30 men in Montreal from August 5-14.

One name conspicuously missing from the list of champions is Canada’s Milos Raonic. This 20-year-old tennis superstar from Thornhill is recovering from recent hip surgery so he won’t be competing in this year’s tournament  but recently, I had a chance to catch up with him when he stopped by Rogers headquarters in Toronto for an autograph signing. We talked about how he plans to stay connected to the Rogers Cup this year, his favourite smartphone and when we’ll see him back on the courts. Take a look:

If you want to stay on top of every serve, volley and smash, make sure you check out Rogers On Demand Online where you’ll be able to stream live coverage of both the women’s and men’s tournaments. All Rogers customers can access the content at no additional charge. All you need is an Internet connection.

The Rogers Cup will also be broadcast live on Rogers Sportsnet, with 12 hours of coverage on weekdays, and live streaming on Sportsnet.ca.

And of course, there’s nothing better than the real thing. You can get tickets here and remember, Rogers customers get a 25% discount.

How will you be watching the Rogers Cup? What match are you looking forward to seeing?

Rogers meets changing customer needs with new Hi-Speed Internet tiers

With the rapid rise of online video, social media and online gaming, the way Canadians use the Internet is changing dramatically. We’re always reviewing our plans to ensure they meet your changing needs so starting later this month, our Hi-Speed Internet tiers are being upgraded with faster download speeds and higher data allowances for customers on Rogers DOCSIS 3.0, our best and fastest wireline network.

The new plans apply to Rogers Hi-Speed Internet Express, Extreme, Extreme Plus and Ultimate tiers. In late July we will begin automatically upgrading customers on Rogers DOCSIS 3.0 to our enhanced plans at no additional cost.

Customers on a DOCSIS 2.0 modem or home networking modem can upgrade to these new tiers by visiting a Rogers retail location and upgrading to a DOCSIS 3.0 home networking modem. The prices on our new DOCSIS 3.0 tiers match our existing price plans and a DOCSIS 3.0 home networking modem only costs an extra $1.50 to $3 per month over the cost of a DOCSIS 2.0 modem.

As one example, customers on our Extreme plan and using a DOCSIS 3.0 modem will see their download speeds¹ increase from up to 15 Mbps to up to 24 Mbps and their data allowance increase from 80 GB to 100 GB at no additional cost. The updated Extreme plan allows customers to stream approximately 90 hours of content on Rogers On Demand Online or 50 HD movies per month.

Check out the below chart for a complete breakdown of the changes:

Unsure if you have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem? It is the Wireless N Gateway modem and you can see what it looks like here.

Also starting later this month, you’ll be able to add a data assurance option if you’re currently using the Express and Extreme tiers. For an extra $20 per month, you’ll receive an extra 80 GB of data on top of your existing allowances. If you don’t need quite as much data, you can also get an additional 20 GB for an extra $5 per month.

A Friday night free for all with Rogers on Demand Online

Rogers on Demand Online: Mad MenDo you remember when it didn’t cost nearly $50 for a night at the movies? We do. Luckily, if you’re looking for a free, fun way to spend a Friday night (or any night, for that matter), Rogers On Demand Online has some super movie and TV show suggestions to keep you entertained.

As part of a new RedBoard series highlighting some of the great content on Rogers on Demand Online, we’re starting with a look at some of our favourite programming that’s included with your Digital TV subscription at no additional cost.

Mad Men: Mad Men is one of the most critically acclaimed television series of the past five years, thanks to it’s unique setting (the ad agency world of the 1960’s) and ridiculously hot cast (Jon Hamm, January Jones and Elisabeth Moss, for starters). Rogers On Demand Online has all four seasons of the show, so you can start at the very beginning. Mad Men is available for free to all Rogers Digital TV customers.

Robocop: Part man. Part machine. All cop. That was the tagline for Robocop when it hit theatres back in 1987. The less said about the sequels and TV series, the better, but there’s no doubt that the original film, which is available to Rogers customers on Rogers On Demand Online, has stood the test of time.  Sidenote – a remake is on the way next year, but we doubt it will be as good as the original. Robobop is available for free to Rogers Wireless, Home Phone, Hi-Speed Internet and Cable TV customers.

HBO: If you’re a HBO Subscriber, you can watch the channel on your computer so you don’t have to battle for TV supremacy. Among the HBO shows you can access easily are George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones and The Ricky Gervais Show. Plus, you can get psyched for the upcoming fourth season of True Blood by revisiting Season Three.  HBO programming is available on Rogers on Demand Online to Rogers Cable TV customers as part of their HBO subscription.

That’s just a small sampling of the amazing content Rogers On Demand has to offer. If none of the above speaks to you, I guarantee you’ll be able to find something when you visit the site.

What’s your favourite show or movie to watch on a Friday night?

First 3D movies available on Rogers on Demand

Gnomeo and JulietFor true movie lovers, 3D is as good as it gets. And with 3D TVs growing in popularity, we know that people are hungry for more 3D programming. Good news for Rogers Digital Cable customers with 3D-enabled TVs: you’ll now be able to rent 3D movies from Rogers on Demand Channel 100.

Starting today, Rogers on Demand will offer its first 3D movies: Gnomeo and Juliet and Tron: Legacy for $7.99, the same price as an HD rental from Rogers on Demand.

These new movies are just the beginning. We’re committed to bringing you the best movies on demand which is why we plan to add at least one new 3D title per month to Rogers on Demand.

If you have a 3D TV and plan to rent either of these movies, here’s what you’ll need to ensure you can get the full experience:

  • An HD Box from Rogers. Renting movies from Rogers on Demand on 3D will not work if you are watching on an SD box
  • Active 3D glasses that either came (or are compatible) with your 3D TV
  • HDMI cable hook-up from digital box to your TV
  • 3D mode enabled (some TVs do this automatically when they detect a 3D signal, but check your manual just in case)
  • Go to Channel 100 -> Movies -> 3D and order your movie

We first started providing 3D programming  on Ch. 900 in October 2010 and have provided some great content in 3D like the final matches of the FIFA World Cup and a 3D Hockey Night in Canada broadcast of the Montreal Canadiens vs. the Toronto Maple Leafs.

As 3D technology continues to evolve, we’re looking forward to bringing you more movies in 3D.

What movie would you like to watch in 3D?
