RedBoard video: Tennis superstar Milos Raonic on tech, Twitter and the pro tour

The Rogers Cup is around the corner and with names like Nadal, Federer, Sharapova and the Williams sisters on the schedule, you can guarantee some intense battles. The world’s top 25 women are set to compete in Toronto and the top 30 men in Montreal from August 5-14.

One name conspicuously missing from the list of champions is Canada’s Milos Raonic. This 20-year-old tennis superstar from Thornhill is recovering from recent hip surgery so he won’t be competing in this year’s tournament  but recently, I had a chance to catch up with him when he stopped by Rogers headquarters in Toronto for an autograph signing. We talked about how he plans to stay connected to the Rogers Cup this year, his favourite smartphone and when we’ll see him back on the courts. Take a look:

If you want to stay on top of every serve, volley and smash, make sure you check out Rogers On Demand Online where you’ll be able to stream live coverage of both the women’s and men’s tournaments. All Rogers customers can access the content at no additional charge. All you need is an Internet connection.

The Rogers Cup will also be broadcast live on Rogers Sportsnet, with 12 hours of coverage on weekdays, and live streaming on Sportsnet.ca.

And of course, there’s nothing better than the real thing. You can get tickets here and remember, Rogers customers get a 25% discount.

How will you be watching the Rogers Cup? What match are you looking forward to seeing?

Oh Canada! Celebrating Canadian content On Rogers On Demand Online

Canadian Content on Rogers on Demand OnlineCan you believe that our home and native land is turning 144 years old this Canada Day? Where has the time gone? To celebrate, why not check out some of the great Canadian content we have available on Rogers On Demand Online.

In the mood for a mystery? This summer you can catch new episodes of the CityTV series, Murdoch Mysteries.  Set in Toronto in the 1890’s, the show stars Yannick Bisson as police detective William Murdoch, who uses some pretty unorthodox methods for the time to solve crimes. Now in its fourth season, Murdoch Mysteries is free to all Rogers Wireless, Home Phone, Hi-Speed Internet and Cable TV customers.

This summer you can also catch up on some of the great homegrown shows from CBC. On Dragons’ Den,  some of the county’s most brilliant financial minds decide whether or not to invest in aspiring Canadian entrepreneurs. The pitches are entertaining, as are the reactions from the Dragons’ themselves. You can also watch the entire first season of Republic of Doyle, the comedy-drama series about a father/son private investigation team, set within the gorgeous scenery of St. Johns, Newfoundland. Both shows, along with lots more CBC content, is available for free to Rogers Wireless, Home Phone, Hi-Speed Internet and Cable TV customers.

Something for the kids

If you’re looking for some great kid’s content, definitely visit the newly launched TVO Kids channel on Rogers On Demand Online.  Kids can take a trip to Gisele’s Big Backyard or kick out the jams at Jackie’s School of Dance. Not only are the shows like My Canada educational, they’re fun as well. It’s a great way to learn about topics like the Prime Minister or Canada’s place in the world without anybody’s eyes glazing over.  And it must be noted that Space Trek’s Captain Kent is almost as cool as one James T. Kirk. Almost. TVO Kids is free to everyone.

HBO Canada

One great Canadian show of the past few years has been the HBO Canada series Durham County, starring the amazing Hugh Dillon (who is also the frontman for Canadian rockers, The Headstones). For three seasons, we watched the story of Durham detective Mike Sweeny as he dealt with brutal criminal cases and a disintegrating family life. The series is often dark and disturbing, but it’s also full of mesmerizing performances and visuals.  Durham County and HBO Canada is available on Rogers on Demand Online to Rogers Cable TV customers as part of their HBO subscription.

Homegrown talent

If we’re talking Canada Day, we’ve also got to give a tip of the hat to all the Canadian stars this country has produced, which is what we’re doing on our Rentals page with O Canada – Canadian Stars.  Find out what happens when a man challenges himself to say yes to everything in Carrey’s Yes Man or head back to the swingin’ sixties with the grooviest character Mike Myers ever came up with, Austin Powers.  You can also catch Keanu on Rogers On Demand in two of my favourite films of his, the comic book adaptation Constantine and the great supernatural story The Devil’s Advocate, which also stars the one and only Al Pacino as Lucifer himself.

There’s lots more great Canadian shows to discover on Rogers On Demand Online.

What’s your favourite Canadian series or film?

A Friday night free for all with Rogers on Demand Online

Rogers on Demand Online: Mad MenDo you remember when it didn’t cost nearly $50 for a night at the movies? We do. Luckily, if you’re looking for a free, fun way to spend a Friday night (or any night, for that matter), Rogers On Demand Online has some super movie and TV show suggestions to keep you entertained.

As part of a new RedBoard series highlighting some of the great content on Rogers on Demand Online, we’re starting with a look at some of our favourite programming that’s included with your Digital TV subscription at no additional cost.

Mad Men: Mad Men is one of the most critically acclaimed television series of the past five years, thanks to it’s unique setting (the ad agency world of the 1960’s) and ridiculously hot cast (Jon Hamm, January Jones and Elisabeth Moss, for starters). Rogers On Demand Online has all four seasons of the show, so you can start at the very beginning. Mad Men is available for free to all Rogers Digital TV customers.

Robocop: Part man. Part machine. All cop. That was the tagline for Robocop when it hit theatres back in 1987. The less said about the sequels and TV series, the better, but there’s no doubt that the original film, which is available to Rogers customers on Rogers On Demand Online, has stood the test of time.  Sidenote – a remake is on the way next year, but we doubt it will be as good as the original. Robobop is available for free to Rogers Wireless, Home Phone, Hi-Speed Internet and Cable TV customers.

HBO: If you’re a HBO Subscriber, you can watch the channel on your computer so you don’t have to battle for TV supremacy. Among the HBO shows you can access easily are George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones and The Ricky Gervais Show. Plus, you can get psyched for the upcoming fourth season of True Blood by revisiting Season Three.  HBO programming is available on Rogers on Demand Online to Rogers Cable TV customers as part of their HBO subscription.

That’s just a small sampling of the amazing content Rogers On Demand has to offer. If none of the above speaks to you, I guarantee you’ll be able to find something when you visit the site.

What’s your favourite show or movie to watch on a Friday night?

2010 year in review: Our favourite videos

2010 yearend redboard favourite videos

We’re big fans of online video. Our popular Rogers on Demand Online service was taken out of beta earlier this year giving you access to the hottest TV shows, movies and more via your web browser. As our CMO John Boynton said at Rogers TabLife TO earlier this month, soon we’ll be rolling out a version optimized for tablet users.

We’ve also created numerous video clips exclusively for RedBoard, allowing us to tell stories and do product demos in a new way and allowing you to quickly view and share content right on our website (or through our YouTube channel).

In part two of our series looking back at our favourite RedBoard moments, we present our five favourite RedBoard videos of the year, as well as why we’ve chosen each.

1.       Next is Now: A whirlwind of data, statistics and predictions of what’s next for technology in Canada and worldwide, we unveiled this video at our Annual General Meeting in April.

2.       Will It Blend? Rogers Handset Protection Guarantee: We sent our Miranda MacDonald down to Blendtec HQ in Utah to help spread the word on our Handset Protection Guarantee – and help prevent outoftheloopedness.

3.      BlackBerry Torch 9800 Available from Rogers September 24: We realized you were really interested in the newest BlackBerry device when this preview of the Torch broke through the 10,000 mark in views on YouTube in just a few days. And yes, we agree: touchscreen + physical qwerty keyboard + BBM = awesome.

4.       RIM’s David Neale on the New BlackBerry PlayBook and the Tablet Sector:  In what became one of the world’s very first comprehensive demos of the soon-to-launch BlackBerry PlayBook, Neale unveils a prototype device, including a hands-on with the user interface, HD video and camera functionality. He also talks about what’s next for the tablet space in 2011 and beyond.

5.       Rogers opens new Community Forums: A how-to video for our new Rogers Community Forums — a place to find solutions to technical issues, ask and reply to questions as well as discuss Rogers products and services.
