Mobile payments evolve: Rogers to launch suretap wallet

We’ve been talking about mobile payments for quite a while, and about a year ago we facilitated the first SIM-based mobile payment on an NFC-enabled smartphone in Canada. Today, we’re taking it to the next level, announcing that in the coming weeks our new suretap wallet will be available to the public.

The suretap wallet from Rogers will let customers make payments using their smartphone – just like paying with a credit card, minus the bulky physical wallet. The suretap wallet will include a Rogers Prepaid MasterCard so it’s easier to make mobile payments using the money you already have. We’ve also added gift card functionality to the suretap wallet and can confirm that in the near future, additional cards will become available for download, including payment cards from multiple banks and payment networks and loyalty cards.

How does it work?


You pay with a tap of your smartphone using a contactless payment terminal, or in the case of gift cards, by presenting a serial number or QR code. Whether you’re using a payment card or gift card, all the payment information you need will be available in your suretap wallet.

For payment card transactions, the suretap wallet leverages the secure SIM card inside an NFC-enabled smartphone, allowing customers to make mobile payments at tens of thousands of retailers across Canada. It’s as easy and secure as using a regular contactless credit card where you simply tap and go to make a purchase.

When will it launch?


The suretap wallet is set to launch in the coming weeks. If you’re as excited about the launch as we are, make sure you visit the “what do I need?” section of our Rogers suretap page to order your suretap SIM card, or you can visit a Rogers retail store. Get in quick so you can be among the first try to the suretap wallet.

Our vision for the suretap wallet is to allow you to store all your favourite cards – credit cards, gift cards, loyalty cards, transit passes – securely on your smartphone. With the launch of our suretap wallet, we’re one step closer to a truly seamless payment system.

Looks like it’s going to be a beautiful sunny weekend across most of Canada folks! We’re celebrating by bringing our LTE Max network to Manitoba this weekend, hosting a live chat about TV viewing on Redboard and trading our wallets for smartphones – all in this week’s edition of Weekend Reading. 

Manitoba welcomes launch of Rogers LTE network

Manitoba was definitely one of the most eager provinces awaiting the Rogers LTE Max network. So we were thrilled to announce that as of this weekend our LTE Max network would be hitting the cities of Winnipeg, Brandon, Victoria Beach and Grand Beach.

The LTE expansion doesn’t stop there – we will continue to expand our offerings in the province through a network sharing agreement with MTS, enabling us to deploy LTE to more than 90 per cent of Manitoba’s population over the next five years, including Selkirk, Steinbach and Ste. Anne this summer!

What do you value more – your wallet or smartphone?

Though 60 per cent of people still value their wallet, a whopping 40 per cent preferred their smartphone in a recent Ipsos study covered by IT Business. As IT Business points out, though 20 per cent more are still dependent on their wallet, it’s actually a small percentage considering how new mobile payments are to the marketplace.

Just over a year ago, Rogers introduced mobile payments to Canada in partnership with CIBC. In November we expanded to create the mobile app with suretap technology. With mobile payments on the rise, it’s no surprise to us that it’s such a close race between smartphones versus wallets. Our own Innovation Reports have revealed that 65 per cent of people surveyed said they would feel naked without their smartphone and internet access. Combining your wallet and smartphone seems like the perfect fit!

Do you have a preference? Personally I’m all for carrying my slim iPhone over a bulky wallet when I run to Starbucks! The more retailers adopt this, the less I’ll be bringing my wallet for sure!

Love TV and movies? We want to hear from you! 

Canadians love their marathons. TV and movie marathons, that is. More than 80 per cent of Canadians watched three or more TV episodes or two movies back-to-back this year, according to the latest Rogers Innovation Report, released Monday. The longest viewing sessions top out at more than five hours on a weekday and seven hours on a weekend. Rogers New Wireless Innovation Centre

It was a busy week at Rogers, and not only because of the BlackBerry 10 launch. We announced this week that we’ve opened a new Wireless Innovation Centre in Toronto to help accelerate innovation and adoption of connected wireless tech in Canada.

Our very own President and CEO Nadir Mohamed joined executives from SAP, Women’s College Hospital, and Canadian Tire at a round table discussion on connected technology, where they talked about how big data and analytics will affect Canadian businesses and consumers. Here at Rogers, we are expecting to surpass one million M2M connections before end of year.

We also took this opportunity to show off the new space by showcasing hands-on demos of technology that businesses and consumers use today including ATMs, parking meters and GPS locating tools.

Nadir was quoted at the event: “Internet is the foundation for a truly digital world and as our lives become increasingly connected we will see an explosion of valuable data for businesses, governments, healthcare providers and consumers.  To position Canada at the forefront, we are making investments in networks, strategic partnerships, and big data and analytics platforms to build a robust ecosystem that will power a connected future for Canada.”

Mobile Commerce will be huge in 2013

Shoppers are already using their devices to redeem coupons, research products, and make online purchases. As a result, we’re seeing trends that include mobile payments, tablet commerce, and local mobile marketing – all key factors in looking at where mobile commerce is headed for 2013.

The Business Insider cites a recent report from BI Intelligence which explains that the rate of mobile commerce growth, coupled with the availability of mobile payment solutions, tablet consumers, mobile marketing, and mobile fashion apps, combine to provide indicators that clearly show that mobile shopping is on the rise. BI Intelligence gives a great overview of these stats and shares thoughts on mobile commerce based on this data.

However, I finally settled on 4 I think you’ll enjoy – a gift guide for digital cameras, reviews on a top selling tablet (which is also sure to be popular this Christmas), and more info on Windows 8 and mobile security, which both remain hot topics as well.

Tablet Reviews: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

In our last Rogers Innovation report, we reported that 35% of youth believe tablets will replace textbooks within the next 5 years. We wanted to put that theory to the test so we asked La Lobana and Med Lab Maven to use the Samsung Galaxy tablet for a week and asked them if tablets could replace their textbooks. See Windows 8 devices& read why you should upgrade

Connected Magazine recently put together two great guides for their readers – a hands-on introduction to Windows 8 devices, and another one highlighting the key differences between Windows 7.5 and 8. Security & Mobile Payments: Q&A with HuffPost Canada’s Daniel Tencer and Gemalto security expert Paul Bradley

Mobile payment convenience and security go hand in hand. That’s a priority for us as we’ve worked with CIBC these past few months building our new mobile payment solution. We asked Dan Tencer, business editor of HuffPost Canada to challenge our team by sending his most difficult questions on the topic of mobile payment security our way.

We took Dan’s questions to a key member of that team, security expert Paul Bradley, Technical Director for North America at Gemalto. A leader in digital security, Gemalto secures the SIM cards that are used to store information for mobile payments on Rogers devices.

Here’s what Paul had to say:

Daniel: What happens if a phone is lost or stolen? What can you do to ensure I’m not cleaned out the first time I leave my phone on the bus?

Paul: All implementations are different, and obviously the individual mobile wallet application developer will have their own vision. Traditionally speaking, most mobile wallet implementations come with a security passcode which will protect access to the customers’ cards. The current payment network rules (Visa/MasterCard) are such that there is no PIN required to conduct a payment of up to $50. Essentially, mobile payments work the same way as a plastic card does today with one important plus — you also have the option to lock your phone (on top of locking your wallet), so no one can access your credit or debit cards or your phone service without entering your phone’s passcode in the first instance and your wallet passcode in the second instance. This means that it’s not possible to sign for a transaction where it’s permitted to by-pass PIN entry like you can do with a plastic card today!

We have also seen different mobile payment solutions emerging with an inactivity timer whereby if there’s no activity for a period of time or your wallet is running in the background for that period, you’ll be prompted to re-enter your wallet passcode to access your payment cards.  So the bottom line when it comes to mobile wallet security is that a thief would potentially have two passcodes to crack to be able to clean out your accounts whereas today with a plastic card there’s only one.

If you lose your phone or if it’s stolen, then Rogers will be your first point of contact.  Rogers will then let your bank(s) know what has happened and they will act accordingly. Rogers will not be able to cancel payment cards on your device, only your bank will have ability to do so. Banks can lock the application in their back ends, just like they would do for a lost plastic card, and Rogers will block your mobile phone subscription. The risk is identical to the loss of a plastic card.  Don’t write your PIN down, keep it with the device or use a common PIN number for your wallet passcode and your device PIN (see: http://mashable.com/2012/09/24/pin-number-top-20/).

The procedure to have your cards re-provisioned on a new device with a new SIM card is seamless, as a new set can be downloaded easily once you receive your new device.

You’d be surprised (or perhaps not at all!), but people will typically realize that they are without their mobile phone quicker than noticing the loss of a card or their physical wallet which is an additional security measure in itself.

Daniel: Smartphones have apps that often send data back to their companies of origin. How can you guard against apps taking my banking and shopping records off my phone?

Paul: Gemalto and Rogers have put security at the heart of what has been implemented. There’s two parts to the solution: one part is the on-device application which manages the user interface, and the second is its counterpart on the SIM card which manages to securely store your payment credentials and any other application data necessitating secure storage.  A system called “access control” has been put in place to ensure that only valid user interface applications on the device are allowed to access their counterparts in the secure element (in this case the SIM card).

Daniel: If I pay for my groceries with my cellphone, will you ensure that supermarket doesn’t take any more data off my phone than I want it to — including keeping my phone number hidden? 

Paul: First, mobile payment solutions running on NFC-enabled devices use radio-frequency wave technology to power mobile transactions. This is the same technology used today with “tap-and-go” credit cards and it means that no wireless data is used with NFC-enabled smartphones making mobile payments.

When you present your mobile device to a contactless point-of-sale terminal in a supermarket, the terminal will only have access to an emulated version of your MasterCard or Visa credit card that you have installed on your device. In fact, point of sale terminals will now not know the difference between a contactless credit card and a mobile device emulating the same credit card on its secure SIM card.

Also, the point-of-sale terminal will only be able to interact with the payment card selected by the user. The details for this payment card are securely stored on the SIM card

Daniel: They’ve cracked Google Wallet, exposing users’ wallet passcodes. What will Rogers & Gemalto do better than Google?

Paul: Saying that Google has been “cracked” is perhaps not the right terminology. Google experienced challenges from some clever users using rooted devices as they rolled out their service, but the resulting lessons learned will only make the solution better. Now to answer the question, as mentioned before each implementation will be different, however mobile wallet passcodes on the Rogers network will be stored in a secure domain on the SIM, which holds the same level of security as the place in which you store the Visa or MasterCard applications on the SIM.  This certainly differs from other solutions, including the first release of Google Wallet referenced that cached the passcode information, albeit in a hashed form, in an application on the mobile device itself.

Mobile wallet: pardon the pun, but we’re in “store” for much more than convenient payments

How do you use your smartphone for your day-to-day shopping? Have you paid for a coffee simply by showing your phone? Used it to get into a movie or baseball game, or even onto a plane? Me too. So I was really excited when Pan American Games and Olympic medalist Simon Whitfield, made Canada’s first point-of-sale mobile credit card transaction in Canada using a secure SIM card inside an NFC-enabled smartphone last Friday. Excited, because I know that this is only the tip of the iceberg. Before you know it, you’ll be able to conveniently relocate ALL your credit cards, store cards and loyalty cards from your wallet to your smartphone. But mobile wallet is not just about lightening your wallet and making purchases more convenient…. it’s much more.

Your smartphone is an extension of you: it can represent who you are, can know where you are, and what you like to do. Result? When your smartphone intelligently marries the contents of your mobile wallet with your location and your preferences, everyday transactions become a lot easier and more personalized.

The future of mobile payment:

So what’s next? Let’s fast forward about 5 years. Your mobile wallet will one day include your ID, as well as your driver’s license, health card and membership cards. When you apply for a bank account, a new gym membership, or even visit a doctor’s office, everything you need will be on your device.  You’ll be able to verify your identity and pay fees all with a tap of your phone. Even better, filling out lengthy forms will be a breeze, as they’ll be instantly populated with all your credentials.

What will going out for a night on the town look like?  Again, your phone will be all you need.  While you’re downtown with friends having a drink, you’ll confirm your age by tapping your phone. You’ll receive a coupon on your smartphone for last minute tickets to see your favorite band just because you’re in the neighbourhood and the venue has seats to fill. You’ll buy the tickets on your smartphone, and use your device to get into the concert.  You paid for your buddy’s ticket too? No problem. He can pay you back right away by tapping his phone against yours. Stumbling home at end of a fun night, and can’t find your keys?  Just use your smartphone to open your door and turn on the lights. Had too much fun and lost your phone? Don’t worry, your phone will be wiped remotely, and your entire wallet will be reissued to a new device.

A shopping experience you’re going to love

A bit of a shopper, are you? You’re going to love what’s in store for you: shopping will become more of an immersive experience. As you walk through the mall, you’ll receive targeted coupons, offers or purchase recommendations right on your smartphone. You’ll be able to check to make sure you’re getting the deal of the century by searching on-line stores. You’ll make your purchase on the spot, either with a tap of your phone in-store or securely online, using the credit card stored on your phone. And the shopping experience won’t just change for you; it’ll change for the whole family. Let’s say your kids decide to head off to the bookstore alone and find a book they like. No money? No credit card? No problem. They’ll head for the checkout, tap their phone, and mom or dad will get an automatic request to authorize the purchase by credit card or instantly add $10 to their kid’s wallet. Either way, the purchase will go through and your kids will be happy!

The mobile wallet will transform everyday transactions. Where do you think we’re headed?

Rogers RevUp recap: Tackling your tough questions about mobile wallet

Rogers RevUp - a Q&A in Rogers Community ForumsLast week, we held a Rogers RevUp, a live Q&A session in our Community Forums with two experts: Jeppe Dorff, Head of Transaction Services at Rogers, and Paul Bradley, Technical Director, Gemalto Mobile Communications North America.

We invited you to ask your toughest technical questions about mobile wallet technology and security and you didn’t disappoint. Our experts answered dozens of questions on everything from how Near Field Communications (NFC) work to data and transaction fees related to mobile wallet.

Here’s some highlights from the Q&A:

Morlan asked: Do you have a list of the vendors that will be supporting this technology and ready to go, once Rogers has officially launched mobile wallet?

Answer: Mobile payments on Rogers devices will be accepted at PayPass and Visa payWave contactless terminals that today – you can find merchant lists here:

Gblahaut asked: Are there any transaction fees associated with mobile payments?

Answer:

  1. There will be no additional fees for our subscribers.
  2. Originally the contactless limits defined by Visa and Mastercard was set at $15 – and over time it has increased to $50, in some cases the merchants themselves decide to increase that limits, I believe that some merchants have increased the limit to $100, which is great for contactless and NFC adoption, but we feel that the current limit of $50 is adequate for most purchases so a potential increase in transaction limit is an added bonus, and my gut tells me that it will eventually happen.
  3. The service that Rogers is supplying is an enterprise service, which means we are offering these capabilities to banks and obviously there are commercial agreements associated with this, we will however not be notified when or where you use your wallet, nor will we have access to data around your wallet use in general.

James asked: How does LTE affect the performance of NFC technology? Is there a large difference in the time it’ll take to process a transaction when on 3G vs LTE? 

Answer: NFC is really a proximity service similar to Bluetooth, but more secure obviously, so when you make a payment at a retail location it will not utilize your data connection for the payment. Think of this as having a real plastic card on your phone, but in a digital format.

Rogers announces premium Windows 8 devices and exclusive apps

Earlier today we announced that we’re joining forces with Microsoft to launch the largest selection of Windows 8 devices on Rogers LTE network. In the coming weeks, select Windows Phone 8 smartphones and an exclusive Windows 8 tablet will be available including the Nokia Lumia 920, Windows Phone 8X by HTC, the Samsung ATIV Smart PC and the ATIV S smartphone.

Our friends at Mobile Syrup and Gadgetorama wrote posts about the news, and  The Globe & Mail published an article that quoted Max Long, president of Microsoft Canada saying, “I can’t think of a better way to experience Windows across the phone, PC, tablet and Xbox.”

Mobile Jaw highlighted that the Rogers Reservation System has the Samsung ATIV S, Nokia Lumia 920, and the 8X by HTC already up and The Cellular Guru recalled Rogers was “no stranger to the Windows Phone line, having been the first to bring the OS to Canada with the Samsung Focus.” We’re glad to see everyone’s excited!

Consumers eager for new mobile banking tools

eMarketer recently conducted a report on mobile financial transactions in their latest article, Consumers Readily Adopt New Mobile Banking Tools. In it, they look at why mobile banking is so appealing to consumers and why financial providers are on board. Personally, I was surprised to read that in the past 6 months, 38% of US mobile phone users used mobile banking.

I’m one of the many Canadians adapting to mobile payments myself, experimenting with banking, budgeting, and transactions on my Android smartphone. Which areas of mobile banking and payments are you most interested in? Read more on eMarketer’s own findings in the full article here.

Worldwide smartphone base hits 1 billion

According to research released by Strategy Analytics this week, the worldwide smartphone user base has officially topped 1 billion. It took 16 years to reach this important milestone. According to this article in CNET, the first official smartphone was the Nokia Communicator which launched back in 1996. Another article in Android Authority said that the 2 billion smartphone milestone could be reached in as little as two years.
