Rogers fuels your passion for mobile games

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY from RogersIt’s hard to believe that interactive games have been around for a half of a century. Surprised? Check out this recent article from our friends at Connected Magazine that includes a video covering fifty years of video game history.

The convergence between mobile and gaming has never been more prevalent and that’s why we’re excited to be adding the new Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY, the world’s first PlayStation Certified smartphone to our lineup this Spring. Adding to our growing lineup of Android smartphones, the Xperia PLAY combines a console-like gaming experience with the very latest Android platform version 2.3 and dedicated game controls.

With Angry Birds now one of the most popular games for the smartphone operating system, we know that the mobile media ecosystem has become a global game changer (pun intended).  Check out these stats from a recent Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) survey.

  • Smartphone users are five times more likely to play games almost every day than non-smartphone users.
  • Most PlayStation gamers would rather give up social networking sites or fantasy sports leagues for a whole year than give up playing video games
  • More than half of PS3 users tout a gaming library of double-digits
  • 1 out of 5 gamers have played a PS3 game for 10+ straight hours.
  • Chips and pizza ranked high as preferred gaming snacks but 1 out of 3 PS3 gamers choose not to snack at all during game play for total concentration
  • 40% of PS3 gamers cannot be in a relationship with a partner who gets in the way of their gaming

To help fuel your passion for games, you can expect the Xperia PLAY to have around fifty games produced by a range of Android publishers at launch including favorites like: Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, Star Battalion, The Sims 3, Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus, Air Attack HD, Need for Speed Shift, Dungeon Defender Second Wave, Guitar Hero and Assassins Creed.

Can’t wait for the Xperia PLAY?

Check out our recently launched microsite with more information, device specs, videos and pictures. You can also sign up to get the latest updates via email.

What are your favourite mobile games? Will you get the Xperia PLAY this Spring?

UPDATE (April 1, 2011, 1:01 pm): Pricing has been announced and a preorder site is now open. The Sony Ericsson  Xperia PLAY will be available for $99.99 with a three year voice and data package. Starting today, both new and existing customers can preorder this device through the preorder page found at http://www.rogers.com/xperia.

Talking tablets with Claude Galipeau: ‘Hundreds of thousands of apps, billions of webpages’

While touch-screen applications get most of the attention among tablet users, could the browser be the real killer app

Claude Galipeau, Rogers Media’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of Digital Media, thinks so.

As part of our RedBoard series about how tablets are changing the way we live, work and play, we asked Galipeau about his tablet use and what’s next for this device category. For 2011, he sees fragmentation among operating systems and designs, similar to what has occurred in the smartphone space – and that will pose a challenge for those creating content for this technology.

1. How do you use your tablet?

I use it at home, at work, to browse the internet, play games, watch videos and email. I use it for a dual-screen experience when watching TV to check out the filmographies of actors on IMDB or to send a Facebook message to people about the shows that we’re watching. In terms of games, I often use it while traveling – especially on planes – to play games like NFS Shift or Chopper 2. And of course I watch video, especially on planes with noise canceling earphones.

2. What has surprised you most about the device?

The device isn’t bad as a work email device. I thought it would be more of an entertainment device.

3. What are your predictions for tablets in 2011?

There will be more competition for the iPad and fragmentation of the device ecosystem. We’re seeing many manufacturers with different operating systems supplying the market with devices and as a content producer, this is challenging because there are different optimizations required for each one. We have to play in both the app and browser ecosystem to be relevant and this makes it more difficult to quickly produce high quality products for our audiences and users.

In 2011, we’ll see the same kind of device fragmentation on tablets that occurred on mobile phones. Different operating systems and different form factors will be a challenge for designers.

4. If you were sent to a desert island and could take one device, would it be a tablet or another device? Which one and why?

Smartphone because of the texting and talking capabilities. I would use it to hear my wife and baby’s voices.

5. What’s your one must-have app?

The browser is my #1 app.  Our data shows that 60 per cent of users say the browser is their primary activity on the iPad. There may be hundreds of thousands of apps available on the iPad, but there are billions of web pages accessible off a browser.

Galipeau will be part of a panel entitled “Tablets and the Media” at Rogers TabLife TO tomorrow.

You can learn more about the event at tablife.ca. We’ll have full coverage of Rogers TabLife TO here on RedBoard and shortly after the event.

UPDATE (December 2, 1:10 PM): Alongside tomorrow’s event, we’ll be running a national contest where we’ll be giving away a Dell Streak and Samsung Galaxy Tab. To enter, all you have to do is tweet how a tablet could change your life for the better along with the hashtag #TabLife. Follow us @RogersBuzz on Twitter to learn more.

Rogers Announces Data Plans for iPad in Canada

Apple fans are passionate about Apple products. We know because we’re among them.

Rogers introduced the iPhone to Canada in 2008 and we were the first Canadian carrier to announce that we’ll carry the iPad. Now we’re thrilled to say it’s available for pre-order today at www.apple.com/ca/ipad and is set to launch on May 28.

We have a long-standing, strong working relationship with Apple and we think our years of experience will benefit Canadian iPad customers.

All iPad data plans will be available without a term contract, providing the freedom to activate or cancel a plan at any time. Rogers customers purchasing the iPad will be able to take advantage of the new iPad data plans to enjoy the device’s full suite of capabilities, backed by the reliability of Rogers’ proven network.

Here are the pricing options we’re making available to future iPad customers:

  • 250 MB for $15 + WiFi (Includes free unlimited access to all Rogers WiFi Hot Spots)
  • 5 GB for $35 + WiFi (Includes free unlimited access to all Rogers WiFi Hot Spots)

Customer experience shows that our 250mb/5GB plans will be more than enough for virtually all our customers. 99.8 per cent of our iPhone customers use less than 5GB of data. As the tablet is a new category, it’s too early to say if customers will use more or less data than they do for iPhone. But even for our rocket stick/embedded laptop customers, 95.6 per cent use less than 5GB per month.

Visit www.rogers.com/iPad for full details on these plans.  As always, we’ll keep you posted right here.

Note the iPad will not be available on the Fido brand at launch.

Much has been said about the tablet being an important new product category. More importantly, you now have more options than ever before to communicate, to be informed and to be entertained wherever, whenever you desire.

Excited yet? We are. And we’d like you to activate your iPad with Rogers.

Will you be buying an iPad? Why or why not?

We listened: How to customize the order of the Quick Start menu

In January, we introduced the Quick Start menu for our Digital Cable subscribers in Ontario. Our goal was to provide an easier way for you to navigate programming, such as On Demand channels and those in free preview. We also added some cool new features, including TV mix channels, local weather and games.

We thought you’d love it. And while many do, some of you told us you didn’t like having to press “guide” twice to get to TV listings. We appreciate your feedback; we listened and we acted.

Starting today, we’ve made a change so you can now switch the order in which the Quick Start menu appears on your digital TV box. You can choose if you want the new menu or TV listings first.

Here’s how to modify the settings:

1.    On remote, click the guide button
2.    Select “Self-Service”
3.    Click “Change GUIDE Order” option
4.    A screen that looks like this will appear:

quick-start-change-screen

5.    Select one of the following options: “Quick Start menu first” or “TV Listings first.” (Your option appears in red)
6.    Repeat for each digital box in your home.

Later this year, we’ll be rolling out further enhancements as well as several technology upgrades.

What do you think about the Quick Start menu and the ability to now change the order in which it appears? Let us know by taking our survey here or by submitting a comment below.

Update (March 4, 1:32 pm): In other blogs that have picked up on this post, there’s been some confusion about whether this change reduces the number of clicks or just changes the order of a double-click. To clarify, the changes implemented today mean that we’ve reduced the number of clicks if you don’t want to view the Quick Start menu. If you’ve made the change outlined above, pressing guide once goes straight to the TV Listings screen. From there, you can choose your channel and start watching as you did in the past. If you don’t choose a channel, pressing guide a second time will bring up the Quick Start menu.
