Rogers on Demand Online: what’s new for 2012
It’s hard to believe that we’re near the end of January already. How are you feeling? Resolved? Tired? Ready to take on a brand new year? A new year also means brand new tv shows all vying for your time and eyes. To bring you up to speed on what’s out there, we’ve put together a list of some of the new prime time shows we’ve got on Rogers On Demand Online. Take a look – I bet there’s something you’ll love to watch.
Alcatraz
What do you get when you combine the most ominous prison in American history with one of the most acclaimed creators currently working in television? The answer is J.J. Abrams’ Alcatraz, which is free to watch to everyone. The show stars Sam Neil, Jorge Garcia (Hurley from Lost) and Sarah Jones. The series combines the supernatural mystery of Lost with a police procedural style case of the week, which makes it an entertaining show. The big question of the series – how are long supposed dead former Alcatraz prisoners alive in contemporary San Francisco having not aged a day? Hopefully, we’ll get answers sooner than later.
Arctic Air
Take a look at the new CBC show Arctic Air, free to watch for all Rogers Customers, and you may notice a familiar face. Adam Beach has been seen in all sorts of mainstream fair, including the film Cowboys and Aliens, Flags Of Our Fathers and as a regular on Law and Order: SVU. In Arctic Air, Beach stars as Bobby, who returns home to Yellowknife and the family business, a maverick airline run by an eclectic group of people. The show is already a huge hit, with more than 1 million people watching the premiere episode. Catch up on the series and see what Canada’s been talking about, right here.
My Babysitter’s A Vampire
If you’re looking for something for the kids, you should definitely check out Teletoon’s My Babysitter’s A Vampire. What began as a made for television film is now a full on series about a trio with some cool powers – Ehtan is a Seer, his best pal Benny is a spellmaster and his babysitter Sarah just happens to be a vampire. Together, they take on all sorts of things that go bump in the night – from zombies and ghosts to demons and witches. My Babysitter’s A Vampire is free to watch to Rogers cable customers, so catch up on the first three episodes right now.
That’s just a taste of some of the new shows available to watch on Rogers On Demand Online. There are also brand new episodes of How I Met Your Mother, Glee and many more available as well.
Of all the new shows that have premiered in 2012, which are you most excited about?

Oh Canada! Celebrating Canadian content On Rogers On Demand Online
Can you believe that our home and native land is turning 144 years old this Canada Day? Where has the time gone? To celebrate, why not check out some of the great Canadian content we have available on Rogers On Demand Online.
In the mood for a mystery? This summer you can catch new episodes of the CityTV series, Murdoch Mysteries. Set in Toronto in the 1890’s, the show stars Yannick Bisson as police detective William Murdoch, who uses some pretty unorthodox methods for the time to solve crimes. Now in its fourth season, Murdoch Mysteries is free to all Rogers Wireless, Home Phone, Hi-Speed Internet and Cable TV customers.
This summer you can also catch up on some of the great homegrown shows from CBC. On Dragons’ Den, some of the county’s most brilliant financial minds decide whether or not to invest in aspiring Canadian entrepreneurs. The pitches are entertaining, as are the reactions from the Dragons’ themselves. You can also watch the entire first season of Republic of Doyle, the comedy-drama series about a father/son private investigation team, set within the gorgeous scenery of St. Johns, Newfoundland. Both shows, along with lots more CBC content, is available for free to Rogers Wireless, Home Phone, Hi-Speed Internet and Cable TV customers.
Something for the kids
If you’re looking for some great kid’s content, definitely visit the newly launched TVO Kids channel on Rogers On Demand Online. Kids can take a trip to Gisele’s Big Backyard or kick out the jams at Jackie’s School of Dance. Not only are the shows like My Canada educational, they’re fun as well. It’s a great way to learn about topics like the Prime Minister or Canada’s place in the world without anybody’s eyes glazing over. And it must be noted that Space Trek’s Captain Kent is almost as cool as one James T. Kirk. Almost. TVO Kids is free to everyone.
HBO Canada
One great Canadian show of the past few years has been the HBO Canada series Durham County, starring the amazing Hugh Dillon (who is also the frontman for Canadian rockers, The Headstones). For three seasons, we watched the story of Durham detective Mike Sweeny as he dealt with brutal criminal cases and a disintegrating family life. The series is often dark and disturbing, but it’s also full of mesmerizing performances and visuals. Durham County and HBO Canada is available on Rogers on Demand Online to Rogers Cable TV customers as part of their HBO subscription.
Homegrown talent
If we’re talking Canada Day, we’ve also got to give a tip of the hat to all the Canadian stars this country has produced, which is what we’re doing on our Rentals page with O Canada – Canadian Stars. Find out what happens when a man challenges himself to say yes to everything in Carrey’s Yes Man or head back to the swingin’ sixties with the grooviest character Mike Myers ever came up with, Austin Powers. You can also catch Keanu on Rogers On Demand in two of my favourite films of his, the comic book adaptation Constantine and the great supernatural story The Devil’s Advocate, which also stars the one and only Al Pacino as Lucifer himself.
There’s lots more great Canadian shows to discover on Rogers On Demand Online.
What’s your favourite Canadian series or film?

This World Cup has been all about getting the matches where, when and how you want them and Rogers has been delivering them on multiple platforms: Online? Check. Mobile? Check. On Demand? Check. In HD? Check.
And with upset after upset in the early rounds, this World Cup is proving to be one of the most exciting yet. Adding to the excitement is the fact that the final matches of the tournament – the match for third place [Saturday, July 10 at 2:30 pm ET] and the final championship match [Sunday, July 11 at 2:30 pm ET] – will be broadcast by CBC in 3D. Rogers Digital Cable customers in Ontario can go to channel 900 to catch the in-your-face action.
Here’s what you need to go 3D:
- A 3D TV set
- 3D glasses that came with (or are compatible with) your 3D TV
- A Rogers HD digital box or HD PVR, such as the Cisco/SA Explorer 4250HD, Pace 551HD, Explorer 8300HD and Explorer 8642HD
- An HDMI cable connecting the HD box or HD PVR to your 3D TV
- Setting your 3D TV to “side-by-side” 3D format (consult your 3D TV’s manual)
Enjoy the action. This type of excitement only comes once every four years – and with 3D, you’ll be able to experience it like never before.
How will you be watching the final two games? What do you think of the tournament so far?

Update (June 8, 11:00 a.m.): Rogers On Demand Mobile is now live in Android market (URL Mobile Only) and iTunes. The BlackBerry version will be available later this week.
We’ve had some questions about the app’s compatibility. Rogers On Demand Mobile was designed to work on devices sold and supported by Rogers. Unsupported devices, including the Google Nexus One, cannot run the Rogers On Demand Mobile app at this time. Please visit www.rogers.com/RODM for the list of supported devices.
With regards to data charges – data used by the Rogers On Demand Mobile app won’t count towards your data plan bucket. Downloading the app itself does incur some small data charges.
Update (June 11, 9 a.m.): Rogers customers with BlackBerry 9000, 9100 or 9700 are able to download the application via Rogers mobile portal (URL mobile only).
