All coming up in this week’s edition of Weekend Reading.

There’s an app for everything

Apple and BlackBerry both released reports on their respective app stores this week, and the figures were pretty mind blowing. In the short time since BlackBerry 10 launched, 120,000 apps have already become available for the platform in the Blackberry World store. There were 70,000 apps available when the Z10 and Q10 launched, so another 50,000 were created in a mere four months. BlackBerry president and CEO Thorsten Heins shared his excitement and future plans with BlackBerry Live here.

Apple also hit a milestone this week, reaching the 50 billionth download mark! The App Store first opened in 2008 with only 500 apps. Now almost five years later, the store is seeing downloads at a rate of 800 apps per second! Apple commemorated the occasion by awarding the 50 billionth downloader a $10,000 App Store gift card. Read more from the official press release from Apple here. I’m personally responsible for hundreds of those downloads myself! What are some of your faves? Let’s compare top picks in the comments below!

Rogers LTE rolls out in more markets this week!

Fantastic news announced today that we couldn’t wait to share with our RedBoard readers – our LTE Max network has launched in a number of new markets, including Brooks, Cochrane and Canmore, Alta. and Sault Ste. Marie and Muskoka, Ont. We also expanded our LTE network to Saint-Georges, Que.; Sydney, N.S.; Bathurst, N.B and expanded our coverage in the Moncton, N.B. area.

With these new cities launched, we’re still right on track to deliver with our commitment to launch our LTE network in 44 new markets this spring. With the LTE network expansion to cottage country, who’s going to take advantage in Muskoka this long weekend?

Google Play for Education

This week was huge for Google. Among their many announcements came news of an Android app being launched to aid in children’s education. Already piloted in select schools, the app enables teachers to search for educational apps for their subjects and grade levels. Teachers can then add the selected apps to Nexus tablets – all the students need is a Google account to access it.

Be sure to visit the official Google blog to keep up on all their latest developments on Google Play for Education and so much more.

Treat Tim Cook to a cup of Joe … for $610,000

Yes, you read that correctly, there are no typos where the numbers of zeros are concerned. In an auction on CharityBuzz, a bidder paid $610,000 for a 30 to 60 minute coffee break with the Apple CEO. Although it was a hefty price tag for a java jolt, proceeds will be going towards the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights.

So what do you think they will talk about over their coffee? I’d love to be a fly on the wall for that conversation!

Coming soon: Rogers LTE brings fastest BlackBerry Q10 experience to Canadians

BlackBerry Q10 Smartphone Exciting news BlackBerry® 10 fans! When the new smartphone launches this spring, Rogers will be the first Canadian carrier to bring its customers the BlackBerry Q10 device that supports the blazing fast  2600 MHz LTE spectrum band. The BlackBerry Q10 smartphone will be available in both black and white, but Rogers customers will be the first to have access to the white model.

The BlackBerry Q10 smartphone includes the physical QWERTY keyboard and a touch screen combined with the power of the BlackBerry 10 platform – perfect for people who love to communicate and collaborate on-the-go.

What makes this BlackBerry so fast?

The BlackBerry Q10 smartphone is built to run on the 2600 MHz LTE spectrum band with Rogers LTE, Canada’s fastest wireless internet. Rogers has more 2600 MHz spectrum band deployed than any other carrier in Canada, so if you’re looking for speed, this is the place to get your device.

With the BlackBerry Q10 smartphone on the Rogers LTE network, you’ll be able to do more with your device, such as live stream HD sports with no buffering, download large files quickly and stream music at faster speeds. And we announced last month we will expand our 2600 MHz LTE spectrum  to 44 new markets this spring.

Want your smartphone in white?

Device colour can be very important, maybe to add a little personality or match your handbag. Whatever the reason, Rogers customers will be the first to get the BlackBerry Q10 smartphone in white.

How do I get one?

The BlackBerry Q10 smartphone will be arriving at Rogers retail locations across Canada in the coming weeks starting at $199.99 with select three year plans. Current Rogers wireless customers can reserve this device now on the Rogers Reservation System and pre-orders for new customers are now available at rogers.com.

Update, April 23, 2 p.m.: We’re happy to announce the BlackBerry Q10 will be available in-store at Rogers retail locations on May 1.

Weekend Reading: BlackBerry 10, new Rogers Wireless Innovation Centre, and mobile commerce

One of the reasons we started our Weekend Reading series is because of the sheer volume of things happening in the tech world, from innovations and advancements, to product releases and events. This week alone:  we saw the launches of BlackBerry 10 and the new Rogers Wireless Innovation Centre. It doesn’t stop there. We also look ahead at what to expect in 2013 from mobile commerce. Happy Friday everyone!

BlackBerry introduces BlackBerry 10

Without a doubt, this week’s top story was the worldwide introduction to the new BlackBerry 10 platform. Just about every tech blog in the universe reported on the news, eager to demo their favorite features and share their insights.

We were lucky enough to not only attend the BlackBerry media event in Toronto, but get an exclusive hands-on video showcasing the BlackBerry Z10. The device is available to Rogers customers as of February 5th but you can pre-register for yours today through the Rogers Reservation System.

Here’s a roundup of our picks for some of the best live coverage available online, so you can catch up on everything BlackBerry:

Will you be making your next smartphone a BlackBerry Z10?

Rogers New Wireless Innovation Centre

It was a busy week at Rogers, and not only because of the BlackBerry 10 launch. We announced this week that we’ve opened a new Wireless Innovation Centre in Toronto to help accelerate innovation and adoption of connected wireless tech in Canada.

Our very own President and CEO Nadir Mohamed joined executives from SAP, Women’s College Hospital, and Canadian Tire at a round table discussion on connected technology, where they talked about how big data and analytics will affect Canadian businesses and consumers. Here at Rogers, we are expecting to surpass one million M2M connections before end of year.

We also took this opportunity to show off the new space by showcasing hands-on demos of technology that businesses and consumers use today including ATMs, parking meters and GPS locating tools.

Nadir was quoted at the event: “Internet is the foundation for a truly digital world and as our lives become increasingly connected we will see an explosion of valuable data for businesses, governments, healthcare providers and consumers.  To position Canada at the forefront, we are making investments in networks, strategic partnerships, and big data and analytics platforms to build a robust ecosystem that will power a connected future for Canada.”

With our Toronto launch, we’ve expanded our network of Wireless Innovation Centres, which were already up and running in both Montreal and in Vancouver. Check out what the folks at The Globe & Mail, Digital Home and Cartt had to say about the event, and visit www.rogersm2mbusiness.com to learn more about Rogers M2M business.

Mobile Commerce will be huge in 2013

Shoppers are already using their devices to redeem coupons, research products, and make online purchases. As a result, we’re seeing trends that include mobile payments, tablet commerce, and local mobile marketing – all key factors in looking at where mobile commerce is headed for 2013.

The Business Insider cites a recent report from BI Intelligence which explains that the rate of mobile commerce growth, coupled with the availability of mobile payment solutions, tablet consumers, mobile marketing, and mobile fashion apps, combine to provide indicators that clearly show that mobile shopping is on the rise. BI Intelligence gives a great overview of these stats and shares thoughts on mobile commerce based on this data.

Check out the full article and let us know what you think in the comments below. The Business Insider definitely resonated with me since we committed to mobile payment in November, after launching a mobile payment solution in partnership with CIBC.  I can’t wait to see what’s ahead for 2013!

The Rogers Top-12-of-2012

10! 9! 8! 7! The countdown is on! As we wind down another busy year here at Rogers, here’s a look back at some of the important milestones we reached in 2012.

Do you have any to add?

  1. Speed: We put a lot of emphasis on the ever-increasing speed of our networks this year. Have you tried the wild-and-crazy Rogers Speed Experience yet? Santa did! From our LTE network, to increasing our internet speeds to our full range of devices, speed was definitely on everyone’s lips in 2012.
  2. Innovation: We’ve always been an innovative company. Our Rogers Innovation Reports highlight our commitment to innovation through a series of surveys highlighting mobile and Internet usage by Canadians. Did you check out our latest? It highlights 2012 trends and your tech predictions for the years ahead. If all your holiday sugar and eggnog has made you data hungry, you can check out all our Rogers Innovation Reports on Slideshare.
  3. LTE: Innovation and speed came together for us in a big way in 2012 as we built upon our success as the first Canadian wireless company to launch an LTE network, in Ottawa, in 2011, followed by Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. 2012 brought the  opening of additional markets from coast to coast, including cities like Victoria, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Kingston, Quebec City, Moncton and St. John’s.
  4. Rogers One Number: February blues? Not at Rogers! It was the month we launched Rogers One Number. “RON” as the service is known to its friends, lets you talk, text and send picture messages, and video chat with other Rogers One Number users, all from your computer using your existing phone number. By using Rogers One Number, all calls to Canadian numbers, video chats with other Rogers One Number users and outgoing wireless text messages are free. Did you catch our contest winners’ Rogers One Number chat with Canada’s very own Hedley?
  5. Mobile Payments and Rogers suretap: We teamed up with CIBC to bring mobile payment to Rogers customers earlier this year. Canadian athlete extraordinaire Simon Whitfield was on hand to make Rogers’ first mobile payment. To learn more about how mobile payments and Rogers suretap work, check out our Rogers suretap video on YouTube.
  6. Next is Now … More than Ever: this 2nd in our ongoing video series looks at statistics that speak to how much Canadians value the Internet, smart appliances, the development of the dual-screen experience with TVs and tablets, smartphone usage, digital wallets, and the impact the Internet is having on health, government, education, and shopping. Have you checked it out yet?
  7. Windows 8: How proud were we to be chosen by Microsoft as the preferred Canadian wireless partner for the launch of the highly anticipated Windows 8! We’re bringing the largest selection of Windows 8 devices to the Canadian market, releasing the Nokia 920 back in October. For all the latest details on our Windows 8 offering, visit rogers.com/windows8.
  8. iPhone 5: what would a Rogers year be without an iPhone launch? It sends our sales and marketing teams, our call centres and our clients into an excited frenzy every time. The iPhone 5 brought us a slimmer device with an improved camera and loads of other rich features. Which iPhone 5 feature is your favourite?
  9. BlackBerry 10: Not to be outdone, the upcoming BlackBerry 10 is causing quite a stir. So much so that we’re already taking orders for it! Head over to rogers.com to reserve yours today.
  10. Exclusive devices: Whether it’s the Windows Phone 8X by HTC (8 GB), Nokia Lumia 920, the Samsung ATIV Smart PC and ATIV S Smartphone or the LG Optimus G 2600, 2012 brought Rogers customers access to an exciting range of exclusive smartphones, tablets and apps. Which is your current fave?
  11. Rogers Smart Home Monitoring: Remember the Jetsons? How cool is it that the life George, Jane, Judy and Elroy lived is (almost) here? Ok so maybe we don’t all have our own personal Rosey-the-robot-maid, and we’re not heading off to work in flying cars, but George and Jane would definitely feel at home with Rogers Smart Home Monitoring. From controlling sensors, cameras, thermostats, lights and small appliances remotely through your computer or smartphone, Rogers gives you a taste of the world Hanna Barbara could only imagine when they created the Jetson universe 50 years ago.
  12. Rogers Anyplace TV: Sports on your tablet. What more could a die-hard fan want? Sure, from Vancouver to Toronto to Montreal and everywhere in between we’re mourning our hockey season, but being able to watch the Jays or Raptors or the NBA or Sportsnet on our tablets helps ease the pain. And if sports aren’t your thing, no worries: Rogers Anyplace TV has something for you too. Ring in the New Year with any one of our new releases. Men in Black 3 maybe? Or how about Resident Evil: Retribution? Paranorman? I know! Why not enjoy the perfect merge of sports and Hollywood with Clint Eastwood’s Trouble with the Curve? So many choices! Stop me now or I’ll be recommending movies into 2014!

Wow! What a year! So … have we forgotten anything? Which one of these great innovations changed your life in 2012? Drop by one of our newly revamped concept stores to tell us all about it! (I just had to slip a 13th in there … we’re on the cusp of 2013 after all!)

Happy new year everyone! All the best to you and yours: health and happiness for 2013, from our family to yours.
