Rogers LTE network now live in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver
The wait is over! From east to the west, your new wireless experience is here.
Major markets in Canada’s three largest provinces now have access to the world’s fastest wireless network technology. Rogers launched its LTE network today in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, joining Ottawa where Rogers launched Canada’s first LTE network back in July.
Now, more than 5.5 million Canadians have access to LTE with Rogers– more than any other wireless company in Canada.
Rogers has already started to introduce its first line up of great LTE devices. If you’re in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver or Ottawa, you can now purchase the Rogers LTE Rocketstick, which plugs into your laptop and gives you speeds similar to what you get at home through your broadband connection.
On October 18, we kick off what will be the widest selection of devices with a Rogers exclusive HTC Jetstream LTE tablet, the fastest tablet in Canada. This Android 3.1 tablet boasts LTE + Wi-Fi connectivity, a 10” high resolution touchscreen, 32 GB capacity, and dual-core 1.5GHz processor. Add the HTC Scribe digital pen accessory and you can even sketch, highlight, take notes, or sign documents on your tablet. Rogers customers can reserve this tablet, the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE smartphone, or the LTE Rocketmobile hotspot (Sierra Wireless AirCard 754S) online today at www.rogers.com/lte.
Using these devices on Rogers LTE network will make it easier for you to download apps, stream HD videos, download your favourite tunes in mere seconds or even play on-line video games with virtually no delay or buffering.
To celebrate the expansion of Canada’s first LTE network, we’ve also introduced a special, limited time offer that provides LTE customers a chance to purchase one of Rogers largest ever data buckets – 10GB for $52.93 per month on a 3 year plan.
LTE promises to revolutionize your wireless experience and we’re happy to be the first to bring this new technology to Canadians.
With tablets, smartphones, sticks and hotspots coming in the next few weeks, which LTE device are you most excited about?
UPDATE (January 20, 2012, 4:23 pm): If you want to read a customer review of Rogers LTE network, check out this post from Howard Forums.

The future of fast is coming to Toronto on September 28
Good news, Toronto. In just a few short weeks, you will be among the fastest cities in the world when Rogers lights up LTE in the city. Starting on September 28, you will have access to the fastest mobile technology in the world, starting with the launch of Rogers LTE Rocket stick that you can plug into your laptop to access top speeds.
Later this year, Rogers will offer an LTE device that will be capable of maximum theoretical download speeds of up to 100 Mbps on the Rogers LTE network. Today, devices are capable of maximum theoretical download speeds of up to 75 Mbps and Ottawa LTE customers are experiencing typical download speeds ranging from 12 Mbps to 25 Mbps. This is significantly faster than the speeds Canadians experience on any other wireless network today. As device selection evolves, maximum theoretical download speeds on the Rogers network will increase to up to 150 Mbps.
Rogers has a great line of LTE devices coming this fall which includes: the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE smartphone; the LTE Rocket mobile hotspot (Sierra Wireless AirCard 754S); Rogers LTE Rocket stick (now available in Ottawa); an LTE tablet from a leading manufacturer; and the previously announced HTC smartphone. Stay tuned. We’ll let you know more details about devices as soon as we can.
But you don’t have to wait to sign-up for any of these great LTE devices. Starting today, Rogers customers in Toronto and Ottawa can register for their LTE wireless devices through the new Rogers Reservation System at www.rogers.com/lte.
Buckle up, Toronto – the future of fast is here.

Do you want your LTE? You can make a difference
Here at Rogers, we’re doing everything we can to bring LTE to Rogers customers first. Earlier this month we launched Canada’s first LTE network in Ottawa and we’re lighting up LTE networks in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver this fall, with 21 more markets on track for 2012.
But there are some who want to put up a roadblock on your digital fast lane. They are proposing that the Federal Government limit who can have access to the 700 MHz spectrum in a public auction that will be held as early as next year. The outcome of this auction will have a major impact on deploying LTE across Canada. If a decision is made that prevents certain companies, including Rogers, from participating in the spectrum auction, it would be a recipe for leaving Canada behind the rest of the world, stalling Canadian innovation and limiting your access to LTE.
LTE can unlock the awesome digital potential of Canadians like you – in areas rural and urban – if deployed on the 700 MHz spectrum band. The 700 MHz band will allow for the fastest and strongest LTE network. This spectrum allows for coverage to reach rural areas and move underground and through buildings in urban areas, providing for a more consistent high-speed experience.
The government’s decision will have a major impact on bringing LTE across Canada. Policies that slow wireless advances harm our growing digital economy.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. You can make the difference. Visit Iwantmylte.ca to learn more. Take action by sending an e-mail to the Industry Minister and your local Member of Parliament to let them know that you want your LTE, and you don’t think anything should slow Canada down.

: RedBoard video: Rogers LTE in action
As part of yesterday’s Long Term Evolution (LTE) launch in Ottawa, you may have seen some pictures of a Rogers branded LTE bus. That bus, also known as our Mobile Demo Centre, will be travelling across Canada to showcase the capabilities of LTE firsthand. This is no lab demonstration; the Mobile Demo Centre allows us to show demonstrations in a real world environment that will be comparable to actual customer experience.
As part of our RedBoard video series, I sat down with Rogers Reade Barber, Senior Director Data Product Management, to take a look at some of the demonstrations on board the Mobile Demo Centre including a speed test and video streaming.
You can learn more about Rogers’ LTE network by visiting www.rogers.com/lte or you can sign up at IwantmyLTE.ca to be notified when LTE is coming to your area.

Canada’s first LTE network is LIVE!
Rogers today launched Canada’s first Long Term Evolution (LTE) network and Ottawans are the first in Canada to experience the latest global wireless technology. This fall Rogers will roll out LTE to Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, with another 21 markets in 2012. And later this year, Rogers customers will be able to get their hands on the first LTE smartphones from HTC and Samsung.
LTE delivers higher speeds and lower latency than 4G HSPA+ which means a better experience for customers using highly interactive applications like multi-player gaming and rich multi-media communications. And it will deliver more usage capacity which means more users can access the network at top speeds simultaneously.
At launch, the LTE Rocket stick will be capable of maximum theoretical download speeds of up to 75 Mbps on the Rogers LTE network. Typical download speeds can range from 12 Mbps to 25 Mbps. As device selection evolves, maximum theoretical download speeds will increase to up to 150 Mbps.
Ottawa LTE network coverage spans a broad area from Arnprior, Ontario in the west to Orléans, Ontario in the east and includes the Hull and Gatineau regions of Quebec. Starting today, Ottawa customers can pick up Rogers first LTE-enabled device, the LTE Rocket™ stick, at these four Ottawa-area locations:
- Rogers Plus, 11 Selkirk St.
- Rogers Plus, 1379A Woodroffe Ave.
- Rogers Authorized Dealer – Wireless Express, 205 Richmond Rd.
- Rogers Authorized Dealer – Go Communications, 901 Carling Ave.
Customers in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver can reserve LTE Rocket sticks through the Rogers Reservation System, which will be extended to accept Rocket stick reservations until 9:00 a.m. EST, Monday, July 11. Rogers to invest $80 million in wireless network in the Maritimes
Good news for Canadians in the Maritimes: Rogers will invest $80 million to expand the 4G HSPA+ network in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. This will mean better signal strength, faster downloads and more device selection to nearly 1 million more Maritimers, representing a 130% increase over the current population coverage.
By the time work is complete, Rogers 4G HSPA+ network will cover 94% of the Maritime population meaning people in these provinces will be able to get their hands on the latest devices including Android, iPhone, BlackBerry and tablets, all with faster data speeds and stronger signal strength.
When will upgrades begin?
We’ll begin work on the wireless network later this month. New coverage areas will be announced throughout the construction period, which will continue throughout 2012.
If you live in the Maritimes, what new devices are you interested in getting?

Why our customers need a fair and open spectrum auction
Speaking at the Canadian Telecom Summit this week, Rob Bruce, president of Communications for Rogers, explained why a fair and open auction for 700 MHz wireless spectrum is good for Rogers’ nine million wireless customers. Bruce said fair and open access to the 700 MHz spectrum is critical for deployment of a next generation Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, as it delivers better in-building penetration and, importantly for Canadians who live in a country with low population density, better coverage in rural and remote areas.
“Restrictions on the 700Mhz band auction would be unfair to our nine million wireless customers who have every right to access a truly national, robust LTE network in both urban and rural markets,” Bruce said.

: Our take on 4G and LTE
For several weeks, our largest competitors have been using the term 4G to refer to HSPA+ technology that Rogers first introduced back in 2009.
We’ve been trying to stay out of the name game. Our belief all along has been that what matters to our customers isn’t what we call today’s technology but what comes next. That’s why we announced yesterday that we’ll be launching Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver this year and bringing it to 21 more markets by the end of 2012.
Meanwhile, our customers are telling us they’re confused because different carriers are using different names to refer to the same technologies. So while we initially thought we wouldn’t need to follow suit, we will begin referring to our HSPA+ network as 4G over the next few days. This change will provide consistency for our customers and also aligns with the most recent definition of 4G from the International Telecommunications Union, which says 4G is any technology that shows a substantial level of improvement to previous 3G networks.
But there’s no comparison between HSPA and LTE, which we’re calling “beyond 4G.” Thousands of you have already visited iwantmylte.ca to express your excitement about LTE and to enter for a chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get behind the wheel of a professional race car.
