Weekend Reading: App milestones, LTE rollouts, Google Play and coffee with Tim Cook

Happy Victoria Day weekend everyone! We’ve got your cottage reading right here to help you catch up on all the latest tech news, including more LTE rollouts, the price of coffee with Tim Cook, app domination and Google updates. All coming up in this week’s edition of Weekend Reading.

There’s an app for everything

Apple and BlackBerry both released reports on their respective app stores this week, and the figures were pretty mind blowing. In the short time since BlackBerry 10 launched, 120,000 apps have already become available for the platform in the Blackberry World store. There were 70,000 apps available when the Z10 and Q10 launched, so another 50,000 were created in a mere four months. BlackBerry president and CEO Thorsten Heins shared his excitement and future plans with BlackBerry Live here.

Apple also hit a milestone this week, reaching the 50 billionth download mark! The App Store first opened in 2008 with only 500 apps. Now almost five years later, the store is seeing downloads at a rate of 800 apps per second! Apple commemorated the occasion by awarding the 50 billionth downloader a $10,000 App Store gift card. Rogers LTE rolls out in more markets this week!

Fantastic news announced today that we couldn’t wait to share with our RedBoard readers – our LTE Max network has launched in a number of new markets, including Brooks, Cochrane and Canmore, Alta. and Sault Ste. Marie and Muskoka, Ont. We also expanded our LTE network to Saint-Georges, Que.; Sydney, N.S.; Bathurst, N.B and expanded our coverage in the Moncton, N.B. area.

With these new cities launched, we’re still right on track to deliver with our commitment to launch our LTE network in 44 new markets this spring. With the LTE network expansion to cottage country, who’s going to take advantage in Muskoka this long weekend?

Google Play for Education

This week was huge for Google. Among their many announcements came news of an Android app being launched to aid in children’s education. Already piloted in select schools, the app enables teachers to search for educational apps for their subjects and grade levels. Teachers can then add the selected apps to Nexus tablets – all the students need is a Google account to access it.

Treat Tim Cook to a cup of Joe … for $610,000

Yes, you read that correctly, there are no typos where the numbers of zeros are concerned. In an auction on CharityBuzz, a bidder paid $610,000 for a 30 to 60 minute coffee break with the Apple CEO. Although it was a hefty price tag for a java jolt, proceeds will be going towards the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights. 

So what do you think they will talk about over their coffee? I’d love to be a fly on the wall for that conversation!

    There’s an app for everything:

    I am so happy to see the growth of BlackBerry World! 120 000 apps and growing…great stuff!

    I was trying to imagine what I would do with a $10000 Apple Gift Card…iPads for everyone! Or at least, for 12 of my closest friends!!!

    Still no 4G LTE in Winnipeg, Only selling point for any mobile company is speed, MTS is already with 4G LTE in winnipeg, I extended my contract hopeing to see LTE Max in Winnipeg. Winnipeg should be on LTE max because its the capital of Manitoba. It does not matter what hardware has its worthless if you dont have the speed. Its like driving Ferrari with the speed of 30miles per hour. :(

        Has there ever been any announced reason for the delay? All I’ve ever seen is “sorry for the delay”. I (like others) bought a smartphone on contract with Rogers instead of MTS due to the promised LTE speeds in October of last year. If it’s something outside of Rogers control (IE, government regulators) it’d be nice to know that so we can blame that party instead of feeling like we got misled.

        I’m afraid we wouldn’t have any further to share at this point but Winnipeg remains on our roadmap and we’re doing everything to bring it ASAP.

    Don’t bother with these one line canned responses. Winnipegers are tired of hearing empty excuses. Take responsibility and admit that you falsely advertised LTE products in Manitoba. How many devices has Rogers sold and contracts have they profited off of since they first started claiming LTE was just around the corner in Manitoba? Rogers has abused the loyalty of their customer base and these empty responses only add insult to injury. Time to step up and produce results or atleast compensate customers for this pathetic blunder. What makes it even worse is that 3G in Winnipeg is hardly ever over 1-2 MB/s. Rogers, for the size of company you are, you must be able to do better than this.

      Hi Aiello,

      I understand your frustration but while we’re doing our best to provide LTE to new markets, we also want to let customers enjoy the latest devices like the BlackBerry Z10, the iPhone 5 or the Galaxy S4 which are all LTE enabled.

      As advised to others, we’ll keep everyone posted when there’s any news on that end.

    This is getting a little ridiculous. We’ve been told that we’re on the roadmap and that we’ll be kept up to date for over a year. I know this because I was told that by sales and customer service when I got my phone last April. Hard to believe that now many other cities have lte max yet lte is impossible here. If Rogers had a valid reason for the delays we would have heard it by now. Seems like Rogers does not value any of Manitoba’s business

    Still waiting for LTE in Red Deer, Alberta…. sure would be nice to have LTE speeds like all my Bell, Telus, and every other carrier using friends in Red Deer. It’s so lonely being on 3G….

    Speaking of Apps….
    Has Rogers begun developing their Anyplace TV Home Mobile app for BB10 yet (the Z10, Q10 and soon Q5).
    Rogers could quite simply port/convert the Android version for BlackBerry World yet.
    Many have ported the Android version of the app themselves and are using it that way but to the general consumer this is complicated.

        Why does it take so long to do something so obviously simple as porting the Rogers Android Apps to BB10? BB has made the task easier than any other mobile platform on the market today. It literally takes a few minutes.
        Rogers sells BB10 devices. I, like many, am a long time Rogers customer (Digital HD Cable, Home phone, Wireless and Internet) whose services are not up to par with Rogers customers who choose iOS or Android smartphones.
        The truth is, BB10 development phones and tools have been available to Rogers for more than a year but nothing (apparent to the customer) has been done to ensure a steady flow of full featured support (which you constantly rave about and promote) for Rogers cable customers that choose the new BlackBerry. There is no good reason for Rogers Apps, available for iOS and Android, to not be readily available for BB10 at launch.

    Enough with the lame one line responses. Give us a proper reason or give us the LTE Max. Winnipegers deserve to be treated better than this.
