Summer reading contest: What’s your favourite beach book?

team is sharing their favourite beach reads to help inspire your vacation book picks.

@RogersKeith: The TV series Game of Thrones drew me in to George R. R. Martin’s immersive world and the books didn’t disappoint. They’re big fat summer novels with maps and character charts. Start with A Game of Thrones and work your way through the series. By the end of the summer, you’ll be 5,000 pages in and desperately longing for Martin to finish book number six.

@RogersJenW Every summer I get inspired to revisit the classics, and Pride and Prejudice remains one of my all-time favourites. I love getting lost in the familiar love story of stubborn Lizzie and too-proud Mr. Darcy, who in my mind always looks like Colin Firth … And as for a new read, I can’t wait to pick up the Gillian Flynn thriller Gone Girl – I’ve heard it’s enthralling enough to make waiting at the airport just fly by.

@RogersMary: I like to lighten-up in the summer and read books that are fun and maybe just a bit romantic. My favourite author right now is @TinaReber who wrote Love Unscripted and the follow-up Love Unrehearsed. Definitely swoon-worthy and perfect for the beach or lazy summer nights.  This summer, I’m looking forward to adding some suspense and have heard that Three Graves Full is a must-read.

@RogersSarahM: Classic summer read: Anything from the Shopaholic series, but especially the first three books: Adventures of a Shopaholic, Shopaholic takes Manhattan and Shopaholic Ties the Knot. This summer, I’m looking forward to Sophie Kinsella’s new book, Wedding Night, and Lauren Weisberger’s Revenge Wears Prada, the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada.

And you can pack all these titles away for your cottage weekend with an ereader. For a limited time, activate a new smartphone on a new line with a three-year term and you could be eligible to get a free Kindle Paperwhite 3G. For full details, see

Every summer, since I was 12 years old, I’ve read Stephen King’s “It”. It’s long and engrossing and usually takes me the whole summer to finish but I love reading it so much. It reminds me of sunny days at the cottage, lazing in the hammock and scaring myself stilly.

    1. RogersJennifer

That sounds like the perfect summer read! Do you follow it up by watching the movie?

  2. Will

I finally got to reading Neal Stephenson’s “Snow Crash” and I’m glad I did. An interesting sci-fi story from the early days of the Internet that actually managed to predict some of today’s computer tech with surprising accuracy. Can’t wait to read more of his books.

    1. RogersJennifer

      Thanks for sharing!

  3. Benjamin

My favourite beach books are anything by Tom Clancy. Maybe it’s a guy thing, probably because if I’m not reading then I’m getting bored just laying there. Ha! Not sure if its a good or bad thing that I can read them again and again. His recent ones have been eerily reflective of the current geo-political situation in Europe and Asia. Uncanny, Tom…uncanny.

    1. RogersJennifer

Thanks for sharing! Do you already have one picked for this summer?

  4. Kim

My summer read is To Kill a Mockingbird. I had to read it in high school many years ago, but I consider it one of my all time favourites and revisit it almost every year.

    1. RogersJennifer

I also love revisiting my favourites from high school in the summer – this year, I’m planning to pick up The Great Gatsby again

  5. Amy

My favourite summer read is Alice In Wonderland.

    1. RogersJennifer

      I love that book too

  6. Chris

Gotta be Harry Potter.. There aren’t many books I’ve read more than once and I’ve been through HP more than a couple times.

    1. RogersJennifer

I read through them again last summer, too! This year, I’m hoping to tackle the series in French

  7. Sharon

    The Hunger Games

    1. RogersSarah

Which book is your favourite of the series? I liked the second one best.

      1. RogersJennifer

I love the story of the first one best, but I was way more emotionally invested in book two!

  8. Natalie

Any of Kate Atkinson’s books are great beach reads!

    1. RogersJennifer

Is there one in particular you’d recommend to start with?

  9. Natalie

It’s such trash, but I love this book called My Life Uncovered by Lynn Isenberg – it’s a chick-lit novel that just needs a beach and a margarita!

    1. RogersJennifer

      That sounds perfect for summer!

      1. Natalie

It totally is – and they just re released it with a new cover. But, honestly, I love reading on a e-reader – means I can lug my 100 books around in one device vs another carry-on!

      2. RogersJennifer

That’s great! And yeah, it certainly is convenient to tote multiple titles on a device. My purse just isn’t big enough for all those novels!

  10. Jane Phillips

My favourite summer read from last year was “Gold” by Chris Cleave, but generally for summer reading I love horror and thrillers or something light of the chick lit variety.

    1. RogersJennifer

      Thanks for sharing with us!

  11. Janessa

    I don’t have one… but maybe I’ll read more if I win?

    1. RogersJennifer

      Good luck!

  12. Ilya

I love Roald Dahl – Matilda was one of my favourite books from childhood!

  17. zahra premji

My favorite summer reading is the latest J.D. Robb book from the “in death” series. Being in university, I don’t have a lot of reading time from September to April but when spring/summer comes along, I catch up on all the books that have been released as part of that series.

    1. RogersJennifer

      Happy reading!

  18. Marcus B.

To be honest I’m purely a non-fiction reader (mainly spirituality), but if I had to choose a favourite summer novel I’d read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams!

    1. RogersJennifer

      That’s a classic!

    1. RogersJennifer

      Great choice!

    1. RogersJennifer

Do you start at A each summer?

    1. RogersJennifer

Oh, I love the Chronicles of Narnia! Good choice!

  29. Bryan S. Leach

My latest would be “Damm Few” by Rorke Denver… what’s better than storming beaches as a bunch of Navy SEALs??? Rorke an ex-SEAL himself was in Iraq, Afghanistan and back at sunny Coronado (San Diego, CA) putting thru raw recruits and making them into young SEALs… loving the silver strand!

    1. RogersJennifer

      Thanks for your recommendation!

  30. Brenda Penton

I’ve actually been wanting to start reading the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin. That is my summer reading plan. I think I am the only one out of my friends that haven’t read it and I am constantly trying to dodge spoilers, lol.

    1. RogersJennifer

We’ve heard great things! Hope you make it through without spoilers!

  31. antony bosch

I love The Eyes of the Dragon, Stephen King. Easy read, and ties his books together a bit too.

    1. RogersJennifer

Lots of Stephen King on our summer reading list!

I just finished the first one and can’t wait to get started on the next 2! ^.^

  34. Aaron D

I usually bring out the Game of Thrones books to refresh the story in my head. My favourite would be a Storm of Swords

    1. RogersJennifer

Nice! Thanks for joining the conversation!

  35. Debbie Bashford

I like to read old John D MacDonald Travis Mcgee books. They are short and easy to read especially when you have to pick up and lay down a book often, and they are entertaining

  36. Jennifer L.

Summer is a great time to tackle a really long novel, something like Anna Karenina is ideal. When I need a break from something this big and heavy, I pull out my old Agatha Christie murder mysteries. They’re pure entertainment and can often be read in one day.

  37. Margaret Imecs

    Parks (Harvill Secker)

  38. Laurie-Shawn Borzovoy

I prefer long, dense Alternate Worlds style science-fiction reads during the long, lazy summer days. That’s when I have the time to sink down deep into a complex and richly imagined story.

  39. Lawrence

Neil Gaiman’s “Neverwhere.” It’s short, compelling and suspenseful, and has two of my favorite villains of all time.

  40. Kam

My fave summer read is Shantaram because so much happens in this novel and I just can’t put it down once I start reading it!

  41. John C

My favourite novel to read in the summer right now is Game of Thrones.

    1. RogersNicolas

That’s going to be mine too this Summer. If Summer ever comes :)

  42. Richard Chong

    1984 is my favourite.
I’ve read Confessions of a Shopaholic and Can You Keep a Secret, both by Sophie Kinsella, and they are near the top of my list as well.

    1. RogersNicolas

Along the same line, Brave New World is one of my absolute favorite. I also have a lot of admiration for Philip K. Dick’s universe. Thanks for sharing!

      1. Richard Chong

Just briefly skimmed through summaries of Brave New World and Phillip K. Dick’s biography and I’ll definitely be reading some interesting stuff starting in the next few weeks!

  43. Laurie-Shawn Borzovoy

I’m thinking of Matter by Iain Banks as a great summertime read.

  44. jeffrey n

the game of thrones series are my favorite summer read :0

    1. RogersNicolas

In which house do you belong? I’d probably go for a classic choice with the Starks.

  45. I like either “epic” historical fiction novels or light YA Romance or Action reads. I would recommend the Mists of Avalon or any of John Green’s books. This summer, I’m looking forward to tackling Wolf Hall, Bring up the Bodies and the Beautiful Creatures series – big, heavy books one and all so perfect for an e-reader.

  46. Alex P.

My favourite books to read in the summer are any from the Dresden Files series. I love Storm Front!

  47. Lisa Williams

My favourite beach/summer books are any books by Julie Garwood.

  48. Jeffrey G

I love summer time for so many reasons. One of them is the time I am afforded to just laze around the beach or park with a great read in my hands. This summer I plan to read a classic; Tolstoy’s “War and Peace”

  49. Phyllis

    James Patterson’s Private London

  50. jay kelly

The best summer read was and is Summer of ’42.

    1. RogersNicolas

Great choice! And great luck too so far.

  51. shauna

My favourite read, that I come back to and love to lend to my friends, is Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. I found this book by fluke in the library once, and gave it a go, and have never looked back. It is laugh out loud funny and it is my standard for a good book, that;s for sure! Anyone who likes sarcasm, and “standard” assumptions being turned on their head would agree I am sure!

  52. Andrei O.

This summer my read will probably be Ender’s Game, it’s been on my list for some time but I’ve just never gotten around to it.

  86. Diane

When I was a teenager, I spent a whole summer reading Bob Morane novels…

  87. Michelle Bradley

My favourite summer read is Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel. Oppel writes for young readers but the series are really great to teach about animals, in this case, about bats.

  88. Kevin Low

Wow, summer’s still a few months away and I haven’t planned anything yet. But I think it would probably be a combination of my “Remembering the Kanji” book (I’ve been starting-stopping learning kanji for nearly 10 years now, hopefully I’ll finally get through this book this year!) and flipping through this technology ebook database through my public library as I try to master this new version of Microsoft Office. So all these instructional manuals probably aren’t as exciting as the next big best-selling fiction, but I’m pretty sure they’re at least better than 50 Shades. ;)

    1. RogersJennifer

That’s on my re-read list this summer. The movie blew me away!

The best reads are always the simple ones. I look to go down Children’s Literature lane with the novels of Roald Dahl and C.S. Lewis. Although you cannot neglect Lewis’ novels for the older crowd either: Til We Have Faces, Screwtape Letters. Lastly, continuing in the sci-fi and fantasy fictions: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, and Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut are just a number of classics one should not pass over.

Sometimes I think of how fortunate and lucky we are as Canadians that we enjoy peace, love, security, and the most our freedom to express. We can make a change to the rest of the world by understanding their culture, religion, beliefs and the problems they face. Summer would be sn ideal time to start learning some of this in order to interact with our brotherly species. I would start with a religion book as there are many belief related conflicts going on in our time leading to human problems. Hmmmm I will start learning about values of 2nd major belief system……

Douglas Adams-Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, great and refreshing book to read over the summer, especially if you like science fiction themed novels. The entire book is a satire on traditional science fiction roles and themes. While most of it does come off as simply off-the-cuff humor, a large part is devoted to taking the building blocks of what makes a science fiction novel and distorts them in a new and rather ridiculous fashion.

While I enjoyed Martin’s Game of Thrones I doubt anyone will be able to retain the vast cast of characters and breadth of intrigue until he finishes the series.
Reminds me of another series I started years and years ago. Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time. Used to the standard fantasy series being a trilogy I waded right in and loved it. I followed along until book seven and caught up to the writer. Then discovered it was to be a 12 book series similar to Brandon Sanderson’s excellent new novel Way of Kings (Stormlight Archive).
I put down Jordan’s series and waited for him to finish. Sadly he passed away before completing it. And then ironically my other new favourite author, Sanderson, was awarded the chance to finish it. I started back at book one and am now up to book 11. Almost there.

Wheel of time is a somewhat predictable plot of farm boy vs the evil dark lord, but it is well written with interesting characters, nasty and nice. A little editing for length wouldn’t have hurt, but it can’t be all bad if I am reading til after midnight each day.

  376. MKim

Lolita – Vladimir Nabokov Best novel of the 20th century. Incredibly elegant, moving, mesmerizing, disturbing, poignant – everything great books strive to be. As an English major I have not read a more compelling “love story” although it is obviously much more than that -a meditation on desire, obsession, madness, devotion and how the lines between those things can be blurred.

Summer is the chance when I have the most time to read books, so I typically just try to read as many books in as many genres as possible.
