Checking out the Nokia Lumia 920 from Rogers with Jany Jang

Pure Imagination Hackathon with Jany JangJany Jang is a lot of things: A blogger; a Ryerson student majoring in business technology; a social media  enthusiast. All of these things require Jany to use her imagination.

Recently, she was invited by her dean to take part in Pure Imagination, a Microsoft event and 24-hour Hackathon, coinciding with the recent release of Windows 8. A Hackathon is an event where developers usually gather to collaboratively code a digital project in a short amount of time. Participants were encouraged to make Windows 8 apps for the new operating system.

As part of the Rogers Social Insiders program, Jany got to demo the Nokia Lumia 920, a new Windows Phone 8 device exclusive to Rogers. We caught up with Jany after the Hackathon to see what her weekend was like.

Tell us about the Pure Imagination event. What was your favourite part?

Last weekend, I participated in my first 24-hour Hackathon hosted by Microsoft Windows 8. Prior to the official Hackathon kick-off, I had an amazing experience attending the different keynotes, sessions in various tracks, meeting a plethora of designers and developers from all over Ontario, and challenging myself to explore the possibilities of Windows 8. My favourite part of the event was being able network with different people on Friday night to recruit for a group of developers to bring an app idea to life.

Did you build an app? Can you tell us about it?

As a student who writes many essays and reports, the most dreadful part always seems to be preparing the bibliography. As a result, our team solved this common pain among academics by creating an app that is best at helping people cite their sources by automatically generating a bibliography. We had not met prior to the event, but quickly learned that our backgrounds would enable us to complement each other’s skills. For example, although my teammates were hardcore developers, coming from a Business Technology Management background (with experience in startups), I knew I would be able to add value to my team by suggesting ad/revenue models, and contributing to the creative user interface design of the app.

Tell us about your experience using the Nokia Lumia 920. What are your thoughts about the Windows Phone 8 operating system?

As a member of the Rogers Social Insiders Program, I had the opportunity to use the new Windows 8 phone, the Nokia Lumia 920 during the entire weekend. Initially, I felt that the phone was heavy, but once I turned it on and started viewing some of the different screens, I was immediately drawn by the clean, sleek and stunning user interface, and custom-coloured live tiles (magenta was my favourite). The phone is super intuitive!

What is your favourite feature of the phone?

My favorite parts of the phone are the camera app, vertical scrolling, the pre-installed audio notifications and alarms, being able to change the sizes of the live tiles, the centralized social media feature, and the design of the Twitter app for Windows Phone 8. Unlike the camera app on other platforms, Windows Phone 8 allows users to capture an image by holding down any part of their screen to focus and capture a specific moment. Also, because the phone was on the Rogers LTE network, loading web pages was superfast!

Would you use the Windows phone platform again?

I would definitely use it again!

  1. CAN WE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF MANKIND/GOD/ETC ETC, GET THIS PHONE IN ANOTHER COLOUR. SEE THREAD WITH 219 COMMENTS(BY FAR THE MOST COMMENTS IN ANY TOPIC POSTED HERE) WANTING THIS PHONE IN ANOTHER COLOUR OTHER THAN BLACK, CYAN SEEMS TO BE THE MOST REQUESTED. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHY CANADA + ROGERS ONLY HAS 1 COLOUR, BUT ALMOST EVERY OTHER COUNTRY BIG/SMALL/TINY GETTING THE 920 HAS AT LEAST 1 OTHER IF NOT MORE COLOUR CHOICES. I’M CONFUSED AND EMBARRASSED. HOW ABOUT A SPECIAL ORDER FOR THOSE COLOURS. I’M AT A LOST FOR WORDS….

IS ANYONE AT ROGERS EVEN LISTENING, WATCHING, READING ANY OF THOSE 219 COMMENTS.

and yes i wrote in caps for a reason!

    • Hi Cyan,

Thank you for your comment. I will pass on your feedback to our internal team. At this time, the phone has only launched in black. We’ll keep everyone posted if there’s any more news to share.

      • Do you understand how absolutely frustrating this response is. The point of having social media accounts is to make us feel like we’re talking to a person, not a robot.

        • I don’t think you have noticed yet, but they don’t seem to give two [blanks] about customer satisfaction

  2. It has been over 30 days since you started your PR stunt of asking us what colour Lumia we wanted and how you were “passing on the information internally.” We still have not heard a single word about it. I have been looking forward to upgrading my phone for months but have yet to do so. At this point, I think it might be a better idea to just wait out the remainder of my contract and buy a phone + plan elsewhere.

Do you have an answer for us or were your responses on one of your largest comment threads on this blog merely for show?

  3. According to one of your reps via Facebook, Rogers is only selling black because “that is the colour most preferred by our customers”. I am curious how Rogers came to this conclusion; was there a survey sent out asking which colours people wanted? I call BS that black is “most preferred”.

Also, how come US and European customers get free charging plates, headphones, or in some cases both? Canadian users are not eligible for ANY offers. Furthermore, even though we have to spend OUR OWN MONEY to get these accessories, we CAN NOT because they are not available at the Rogers stores.

This Lumia 920 launch has been gravely mishandled by Rogers. I was eager and willing to extend my contract for another 3 years to get this phone (in a colour other than black), but now I am waiting for another carrier and I will take my money elsewhere. You can’t expect customer loyalty when customer service is lacking or nonexistent.

    • Not only do we not get any offers or colours, we have to pay $100 more (month-to-month) than AT&T customers, even tough our dollar is at or above par. That’s 22% more for the same phone. Unacceptable. Rogers is still selling the 900 for $25 more than the 920 at AT&T. Ridiculous. I’d love to hear the justification for this.

Exclusive sale of the Nokia Lumia 920, only in black, no extras, $100 more than US… and they claim that Canadian wireless is competitive? Absurd!

All phones should be made available unlocked from day one through all retails channels. Then you’d only have to deal with the carriers if you want a subsidized phone. End of problem. Time to regulate.

  4. me too, still disappointed to see the Lumia 920 only in Black. Still hoping for a miracle from Rogers before Christmas.

  5. This is ridiculous!
Lumia 920 in other colours, please!

  6. As soon as the demand for this phone tapers off (not far away- trust me), it’ll suddenly be available in more colours. That’s how it always works. People move on to the next hot thing and presto- suddenly the thing they used to want is available in other variants with different colours. I’d bet everything I own there’ll be colour options in the new year, right around the time everyone’s becoming distracted with product announcements coming out of CES- mark my words.

As I’ve said before on these threads, if you want one right now in a different colour, your best bet is to visit our neighbours to the south.

  7. Don’t waste your breath people, Rogers thinks Canadians are colour blind, and we Canadians now know that Rogers if deaf!

    • I believe you are right. But I still want the phone in red…holy mary, please let it come in red

    • agree with u! feels like Rogers is not at all interested in selling L920 on purpose. May be fed with more $$ by Apple.
The only reason L920 will fail to make any huge sales in Canada is ROGERS! Then again next time Nokia will launch a new device giving priority to Europe since “they did better in Europe” (or they chose a better carrier in there HAHA! )

  8. I don’t seem to understand why rogers can’t make all colours available.
I personally want red, but still…AT&T can do it, and if rogers won’t listen to the 74823423+ complaints regarding COLOUR OPTIONS, then I will just have to bring it from the states

  9. I concur with everyone’s sentiment here. It’s very frustrated to wait and see all Rogers Rep reply with the same “we’ll get your feedback to your internal team,” I can almost guarantee this internal team is made up of all these online techs talking to themselves and nothing being really done. They have no power and they obviously do not how to communicate to customers.

I am waiting for this phone to come in another color other than black. I don’t even have a contract, but apparently they don’t want new customers.

How hard is it to get this color issue to the higher beings? I mean, where else can we voice our opinion? Not like the store reps care, because I believe they’re all independent; but, I could be wrong in this perspective.

2 months and waiting. It’ll be 4 more months, then they’ll bring the colors. This is how retarded Canada’s wireless system is.

      Hi,

Sorry you feel that way. On Redboard, we are indeed forwarding your feedback to our internal team and while I understand it may seem repetitive to let every person know individually, we’d rather do that than leave a comment pending with no reply.

Once again, I can assure you that we’re gathering what you have to say and sharing it with the right team.

We’ll keep everyone informed if there’s any news on that end.

  10. I m so disappointed that ,i m waiting for more color option about 920 but seems Rogers is the only one company which only have one color. I choose Rogers because Rogers can take us new phone very quickly, however this time….well i will change company if other company publish 920 and give us more color option
