Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY and Xperia arc coming to Rogers this Spring

We’re excited to announce that the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY and Xperia arc will be coming to Rogers this Spring. We know there’s been a lot of buzz about these devices since CES in January, and we wanted to let you know that Rogers is proud to be the exclusive Canadian carrier.

Rogers was the first carrier to bring Android-powered devices to Canada in 2009 and we’re excited to be adding these two innovative devices to our leading lineup of Android smartphones.

Xperia PLAY

Canadians will be among the first in the world to experience the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY, the world’s first PlayStation certified smartphone, complete with slide-out gamepad. Xperia PLAY combines a PlayStation-quality gaming experience with the very latest Android platform version 2.3, super fast graphics and dedicated game controls.

Check out this commercial for the Xperia PLAY which aired for the first time during the Super Bowl:

Xperia arc

The Xperia arc has a super sleek design (measuring only 8.7mm at its thinnest part) and is built with Sony technology on Android version 2.3. The device also has an extra wide 4.2” multi-touch Reality Display with Mobile Bravia Engine and an 8.1 MP camera with HD video recording capability. You can check out more detailed specs on the device on Sony Ericsson’s website here.

We wanted to share this news with you as soon as we could, but that also means we can’t share specific details on pricing and availability yet. We’ll be sure to update you here on RedBoard when more details are available.

In the meantime, you can get updates from Sony Ericsson’s Facebook page, Twitter account or from the Sony Ericsson Product Blog.

What do you think of Sony Ericsson’s latest devices? Which one are you most excited about?

UPDATE (February 15, 2011, 12:36 pm): You can now sign up at http://www.rogers.com/xperia to be the first to know when we have updates on the Xperia arc and Xperia PLAY. We’ll email you as soon as we have more information to share.

Both the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc and Xperia PLAY will be available for $99.99 with a three year voice and data package. 1. I am definitely excited about the Arc. I have been following it for a while now and even more so since CES. Will be there to get my hands on that as soon as it comes out.

i’m holding out on buyign a new phone until the Xperia Arc comes out it looks so amazing, a huge step up from the X10 that I was going to get. so glad i waited! hopefully Rogers has good pricing plans and incentive offers.

  3. How about the XPeria Pro MIranda just released at Mobile World Congress? It is supposed to be released by Sony Q1 as well.

Hoping this comes to Rogers this Spring too! As I am looking for a Qwerty phone, with Android 2.3. This fits the bill perfectly!

    Please consider.

    • Hi Brent,

Right now, we’re confirming the Xperia arc and Xperia PLAY only and can’t reveal any other details about devices that may or may not be added to our future lineup. But we’ll let our customers know if we have news to share.

    • Xperia Pro would be definitely my chioce over the Arc, coming from X1i. However I do not believe Rogers will launch all four new SE (Play+Arc+Pro+Neo) Andriod phones in the same quarter. That would be just simply too good to be true.

  4. Will we canadians be blessed with the silver version of the beautiful Xperia Arc?

  5. finally a decent rogers smart phone. usa has had the heavyweight title of smart phones for the longest time. this phone should and will push off the other smartphones rogers has to offer on there current line up. this will give aswell as make way for the other amazing smartphones that are under serious developement right now as we speak. sony arc with 1080p hd recording with hdmi output and android 2.3 is the reason why apple should and always sit alone in every rogers kiosk, all by itself.

  6. These are both sweet phones. Does Rogers have any info from SE on the upgrade path for these devices?

Also wondering if Rogers will be getting any more Android devices with keyboards? My wife’s HTC Dream is getting a little long in the tooth, but she loves having a keyboard. With the exception of the Motorola Flipout, Rogers doesn’t have an Android phone with a keyboard (Like the awesome HTC Desire Z that your competition has).

Any chance you might also be carrying the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro with keyboard?

    • Hey,

Thanks for your comment! We’re pretty excited about these devices too. Both devices launch with 2.3, which is the most current Android operating system. We’ll have more details about upgrade paths for these devices when a new operating system becomes available.

Just the Xperia arc and PLAY to announce at this time, but if we add other Sony Ericsson devices to our lineup, we’ll be sure to let our customers know. Thanks for the feedback on though. I’m a fan of a full QWERTY keyboard myself :)

  7. Can’t wait — though I’ll miss my extensively modded white X10! :p

  8. I recentley purchased to x10 in june, and i am now aware that the arc is coming out, can i switch my x10 or get a lower price on the arc because i feel its unfair that my brand new x10 has been dropped from sony’s updates. This is an outrage and i know alot of x10 owners are furious.

  9. Hello. If I am already on a contract with Rogers but not eligible for a hardware upgrade, can I still purchase the phone itself at a reduced price if I decide that I would renew my 3 year contact even though I am already on one?

I have been waiting for the Xperia Play since I heard about it. It is my dream phone and has everything i have ever wanted in one device.

      Hi,

Once the device is available, I’d suggest talking to a Rogers representative. They’ll be able to help you figure out your best option.

  10. Hey Miranda, how can we preorder these devices? I tried to pre-order my Xperia X10 last year but ran into a great deal of trouble and didn’t qualify for a free Bluetooth accessory.

The Samsung Captivate was also such a nuisance and very horrible experience. I’d like to obtain the Xperia Arc as soon as it arrives but I don’t want to jump through hoops and end up missing out. Early adopters should have a much easier time obtaining new hardware, especially when we’re prepared to pay the full price on the equipment.

    Thank you!

      Hi Dustin,

Appreciate your feedback on your past experience with preorders and I’m sorry to hear that you had a hard time getting X10. We’re working to improve the process in the future.

For now, we don’t have any information about preorders but if you you can sign up for updates at http://www.rogers.com/xperia. We’ll be sending updates via email as soon as we have more details to share.

  11. Why, oh why, oh why does Rogers continue to exclude keyboard phones from their lineup? Sure, you have the biggest selection of “quick messaging” phones around … but have 0 decent Android smartphones with keyboards.

Here’s hoping the Xperio Pro is announced soon. Otherwise I’ll be ending my 10+ years with Rogers and going with Bell, who has a large selection of good Android phones with keyboards.

  12. probably be a bad idea if Sony does the same thing to this as they did with the Xperia10. stopped updates at 2.1, and that was, what? 6months late?
nice phone the X10 but I wouldnt get another sony phone because of that.

  13. Easy with the questions, folks. You should know how this game works by now.

They won’t tell you anything now even if they know the answers to your many questions (which they likely do). Doing so would deviate from the script.

It’s a four-step process that has only just begun:

    1. Announcement with no information but tons of hype (this is where we are now).
    2. 6-8 weeks of stonewalling (‘not ready to tell you anything yet’)
    3. Blitz of info 1-2 days before launch
    4. Launch (assuming there isn’t a ‘worldwide’ shortage of screens, antennas or some other vital part).

Based on the established timeframe (and recent launches), I’d expect to see these phones in stores sometime in April. Maybe late March.

Remember that Rogers will also likely have to get in line behind US and European carriers, which could cause delays if demand spikes in those markets and Sony has to ramp up production unexpectedly as a result. With hot products like these, don’t be surprised if that happens.

Bottom line: Canadians will be able to buy these phones- eventually. We’ll just have to exercise plenty of patience.

  14. Is Sony going to do more testing for updates than Samsung did for the 2.2 update to the Captivate? No one at Rogers or Samsung seem to care that an official update broke the ability to use more than 2.2 GB of the internal SD card…

    • RogersMiranda says: February 16th, 2011 a 9:37am

      Hey Frank,

I think your question is best directed to Sony Ericsson. You can find them on Twitter (@SonyEricssonCA) or on Facebook (www.facebook.com/SECanada)

      • Actually, Miranda, since the carrier is always involved in the way updates are handled and Rogers’ reputation is on the line, my question is best directed to Rogers. And given Rogers’ track record with phone-breaking updates on the Captivate and your lack of desire to do the smallest amount of work to ensure a positive experience for your customers, I think we all know how poorly this phone will be supported once it launches.

        • Actually Frank, NO. Sure it is the carrier in the end that decides to sell the product on their network or not, but after sales support is through manufacture, this includes updates. Hence the MANUFACTURE warranty……

  15. I am really looking forward to this. I hope the arc is a contender for my iphone 4!

  16. The xperia x10 was a disaster. Poor support, delayed updates and poor firmware. SE just rushes to release newphones, then abandons them. The x10 hasnt even been on the matket fora year and SE has already stopped supporting it. My advice, avoid any SE phone. Nothing but flashy plastic devices with garbage firmware.

  17. Why not just the customers if they got X10 last year they will not be able to HUP this year to new ARC? HUP’s are every 2yrs, so dont get their hopes up lol

  18. I agree.. They should just do it like the iPhone users where if you’re an x10 user, we should be able to upgrade to the Arc or Play at a reduced price. It’s unfair that only iPhone users gets to enjoy these early hardware upgrades..

  19. For a second I was excited when I say the Xperia Play. Not because I’m a gamer (I am not).. but after seeing the slide out gaming pad I felt a surg of anticipation to see what the Arc was about. I rushed to the photo page.. & yes verry dissapointed. The one and only thing that prevented me from geting the experia is the same thing that prevented me from getting an Iphone…. NO SLIDE OUT KEYBOARD. Otherwise it would be the perfect mobile. But no Hardkey.. means not for me.

  20. I’m happy to see a new phone come to Rogers, but what about new HTC phones? Also as great a phone as it seems, i don’t see why I’d buy a phone to play games when i can get a better experience with the actual PSP. So I’d rather have a much better smartphone with Android installed because I have become extremely frustrated with my iPhone 3G. so PLEASE get the new HTC phones! I am currently with Rogers, but I don’t really have any options when it comes to HTC devices…

    • Rogers_Chris says: March 3rd, 2011 a 8:28pm

Thanks Ben. We don’t have any news to share about HTC but we’re glad to take that feedback from you about devices you’d like to see us offer. Thanks for reading!
