RedBoard video: LG Optimus Pad now available from Rogers

The LG Optimus Pad is has now joined Rogers lineup of tablets. This unique 8.9 inch tablet is Canada’s first tablet on the Android 3.0 Honeycomb platform that offers both Wi-Fi and connectivity across the Rogers wireless network at download speeds up to 14.4 Mbps. It’s also the world’s first tablet with 5 megapixel  cameras for 3D video capture. Recently, I sat down with Rogers’ Neil Shuart to take a closer look at some of the device’s unique features and functionality. Take a look or you can read the full transcript of the video here:

Paired with a Rogers Data Share plan, this device is perfect for the HD, 3D enthusiast with a super fast dual-core processor and the tablet-optimized Android 3.0 operating system, full web-browsing with Flash and HTML 5 support, 3D video capture, true 720p HD display, plus HDMI cable included for viewing on larger displays—all in a sleek design enabled for connectivity where and when you need it.

The LG Optimus Pad will be available exclusively from Rogers for $449.99 with a three-year data plan, $649.99 with a month-to-month contract or for $699.99 as a standalone purchase.

What do you think of the LG Optimus Pad?

  1. I wish I could review this awesome device, but our dealer in Saskatchewan never has these great new gadgets in store when they get launched across Canada. Airsource does this repeatedly. I wish Rogers could do something about this, as early adopters like myself and our staff would love to buy, but can’t.

Hey Jesse. Thanks for the feedback. I believe my colleague Melanie (aka @RogersMelanie) is in touch with you about this via Twitter.

  2. I am very impressed that Rogers got what is considered one of the best Honeycomb tablets – the US version, the G-Slate has got a lot of good reviews. The screen size is just right, bigger than the Playbook, but more portable than an iPad. The 3D camera though is a gimmick.

It’s a pity that it is only available as a 3G model, since a Wi-Fi only version (that they tether to their existing device) would have been a lot more affordable for many of your customers. That being said Rogers is selling it outright for less than T-Mobile does in the US, and the 2 year price is exactly the same- $549. However it is still a lot to drop on a contract for a device that will be obsolete in a year

Thanks for your perspective, Alex. Personally I kind of liked the 3D video capture!

  3. Does this device support Voice? Would I be able to get the discounted price with o this plan?

    Thank you

The LG Optimus Pad does not support voice, but it does support some VoIP applications. As for a plan, best to talk to a Rogers rep about your options.

  4. It would be great if Rogers would allow us to buy the tablet now.

I’m in Ottawa which has ample locations and none have the tablet on-hand. As a buyer I’m unable to order the tablet online thru the Rogers website.

    • Hi Miranda, it would be great to get a reply on our supply questions? are there any of the Rogers locations that have the device available for purchase?

      Thank you

      Hey Terry,

Ask your local Rogers store if they can order one for you. If there’s one a nearby store, they can get it in a day or two.

      • Thank you Miranda, found a place in Ottawa that just received them this morning. I went out and bought it right away and now home evaluating against the zoom.

        Terry

Nice! Thanks for coming back and letting me know. Would love to hear what you think after you’ve had a chance to play around with it.

  5. I’m a Telus customer, who’d like to become a Rogers customer….

…if I could find a retailer in the Vancouver/Surrey/Langley area who actually has this tablet in stock. Or if the online store would actually allow it to be ordered…searching for a retailer gives me a list of a dozen or so locations, none of which seem to stock it.

    • RogersMiranda says: May 19th, 2011 a 10:39am

      Hi Tom,

We’d love to have you as a customer! Sorry you weren’t able to find a retailer in your area with this device. Did you ask if they can order it for you? Other stores should have the device in stock so your local store should be able to order it in for you if you ask. If you’re still not able to get it, why don’t you send me an email at redboardfeedback@rci.rogers.com and I’ll see if I can help you out.

  6. i understand that if i share my 6gig data plan with this device it will be $30/month. would that qualify fo the 3 year term pricing of $449 and how would the decf be calculated?

    • RogersMiranda says: May 24th, 2011 a 4:45pm

Yes. You should be able to share your current 6GB data plan with this device. Best to call Customer Care or go in-store and talk to a rep about the monthly and term pricing as well as the ECF.

  7. 1. I love how Miranda asks about the browsing experience, and instead of showing her the browsing experience, he shows us Rogers UrMusic app. (BTW UrMusic sucks. Please stopping preinstalling it).

    2. You mention the “data sharing plans” for people with a smart phone with an existing data plan of 1 GB (or more), but why would I bother paying $30 more a month for a data sharing plan when I can (unless you’ve changed your policy) tether my Tablet to my smart phone via WiFi for FREE?

    • I don’t know about all the costs involved in shared data, although the website says $10-$15 per device added, but I find the wifi access point function to be hit or miss.

Sometimes it’s great, and works flawlessly. Other times it is a detriment and has functional issues.

But than again, both my phones and my tablet are all used individually during geocaching, so I have extra incentive to keep each on its own connection.
