RedBoard video: Hands on with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1”

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1” has now joined Rogers lineup of mobile Internet and Android devices.  This tablet has an amazing 10.1” display, 16 GB memory, 1 GHz dual-core processor, front and rear cameras and GPS support making it powerful, portable and convenient.

It’s also Wi-Fi plus 4G Internet access enabled, perfect for people who want to stay connected no matter where they are. With download speeds up to 21 Mbps on the Rogers wireless network, and roaming capabilities in more than 190 countries worldwide, this device can also act as a mobile hotspot.

Recently, I caught up with Rogers Neil Shuart to take a closer look at some of the device’s unique features and functionality. Take a look:

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1” is available from Rogers for $349.99 with a three-year plan, $679.99 with a month-to-month contract or as a standalone purchase.

Let us know what you think of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1”.

  1. I presume that the discounted contract rates for this tablet are only for standalone tablet data plans, not for adding the tablet to your existing phone data plan, right?

      Hey Ryan,

If you first switch to the appropriate data share plan on your existing smartphone, you can add the Galaxy Tab to that plan on a three year term. Once you’ve done that, you’re eligible for the discounted pricing. Talk to a Rogers rep about your options. They’ll be able to help you out. :)

      • Thanks Miranda, good to know that there IS that option. It’s hard to find any concrete details on the website, since most (if not all) of the info on there is geared towards new customers. This is definitely a possible swaying point towards getting the 10.1 vs an iPad 2.

  2. Glad to see my guess was right, and Rogers is getting this tablet. :D

I use the original GTab right now, and I have been quite pleased with it.
The GTab 10.1 may just be my next tablet. :)

  3. I was looking forward to getting this device from Rogers for a very long time. however after reviewing the pricing options, I have found a less expensive way to go. Instead of purchasing the tablet from Rogers with “4G” I will instead buy the WiFi version for almost $200.00 less and use my devices Mobile AP capabilities to share the data on my 6GB plan at no extra cost on my monthly bill. Whereas if i were to get the tablet from Rogers, it would cost me the upfront cost of the tab, plus an additional $10 or $15 per month. Still love Rogers, however I just dont see the point in buying something so expensive when i could do everything advertised for a lower cost.

    • Of course, this is a perfectly valid option except that it a) requires you to have your phone on you any time you want to use your tablet’s data, which is probably very likely; and b) will suck up the battery of your phone like CRAZY. At least, it does with mine.

  4. When can we get these I called around no stores have them yet

  5. Any word on a 32GB or 64GB version?

  6. Where can I find this device, none of the stores have it. It would seem it is not ‘really’ released. Bell and Telus kiosks have it, but no Rogers locations.

  7. I’ve been waiting for this device for some time. But it’s not available as stated in this post because no stores seem to have any. Further, there is no mention of this device on the Rogers website.

  8. i know the previous 7″ tabs support dialing and recieving phone calls , does this tablet support voice calls and txt messages using my existing rogers number ?

  9. Could you expand on how the text messages works? Is there a charge per send/receive, part of an optional plan or are the texts shared with the “data share” plan’s phone (judging by the name, I assume not).

    Thanks!

  10. None available in Winnipeg, MB as of Monday, September 12th. I was told to call back in a week. This wait is killing me.

  11. I got one today it is awesome

  12. C’mon guys- what’s a few more weeks of waiting?

This is Rogers we’re talking about- why be an early adopter, when you can wait 3 months longer than the rest of the world for the ‘latest new devices’?

Yes, that’s correct, this device has been selling in other markets- like the US, for example- since June.

Good to see Rogers’ pricing reflects the reality that this device has been around for a while. Hah-hah!! I’m sorry…couldn’t resist.

By all means, folks please feel free to order a ‘new’ device for $700, just allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. Order now, and you should have it by Christmas. Then you can return it during boxing week, slide across the border and put your money down on the 10.1 replacement, which will already be on sale at fine retailers across Western New York.

So don’t be so down in the mouth…chin up, buttercups, and be glad you had to wait for this device.

It’s been so long, that Samsung should have worked out any of the bugs that might have been in those early production runs. Count your blessings!

    • The 4G version of the 10.1 tab hasn’t been out since June – at least not in the states. July 28th was the official US launch date, as far as I can tell. The wifi-only one launched in June, but that has nothing to do with Rogers. And I’m sure that if we had a population bigger than 1/10 that of the US, Samsung might be a bit more eager to get us new devices real quick-like. Sadly, we do not.

  13. When you say I can add it to an existing plan, does that mean I can purchase it without increasing my monthly fees, or that I can add on to my data sharing at additional cost?

(sent from my brand new 10.1 that I will take back in a heartbeat and by through Rogers if it’s the former)

  14. Actually, it has been available Stateside since June, and yes, I’m talking about the Wi-Fi version, but it doesn’t matter because the ‘version’ of the device isn’t the issue.

As always, with technology that ages extremely quickly, the issue is the delay, and given how expensive these gadgets are it’s a real issue.

I mean, if we’re going to discount the US model because it’s ‘just the Wi-Fi version’ as if it’s no big deal, well then where has our Wi-Fi version been?

Where indeed…certainly not in any Rogers stores.

    • Why would Rogers release a wifi-only tablet?

Samsung brought out the wifi-only version here in August. Unfortunately, Canada isn’t exactly a high demand market for manufacturers, as compared to the US.

  15. Thanks Elise. Looking at the data sharing plans, it looks like I’d lose some of my current features without a significant increase in my current monthly Cost. For the amount of time Id be away from wi-fi, Ill stick with tethering.

    • Yes that’s the idea. We offer to our customers the use of the wi-fi hotspot feature of your device for free but if you think you’ll be needing 3G on your tablet really often, then we also offer the option of data sharing.

  16. Um, Rogers sells a variety of Wi-Fi only tablets, do they not?

    Am I missing something here?

If anything, tablet manufacturers actually come to market with a Wi-Fi version first before the 3G (or 4G, as the case may be) version is released. The reasons for that are obvious- the Wi-Fi versions cost less and are often more attractive to consumers because they don’t require a data plan, and are thus less expensive to own.

The notion that Wi-Fi only tablets have limited appeal in Canada is absurd.

Its all beside the point- which is- these devices age quickly, yet they remain fairly pricey. In order to improve the value proposition for the consumer, they should be released as widely as possible when they are actually new- not 3-6 months afterwards.

I was only half-joking when I said that the successor to the 10.1 could be out in the US during the Christmas season- that might be pushing it a little, but not by much.

Mark my words, Samsung be showing off a new tablet of some kind at CES in January, and when that happens the 10.1 you bought ‘new’ from Rogers in late-September will seem positively ancient. Have fun trying to unload that sucker on Kijiji.

And the same thing will happen next year…devices announced at CES will take 6-8 months (at least) to make it to Rogers stores, and then everyone on this board will be clamouring for all the great ‘new’ stuff for the low, low price of FULL RETAIL.

My advice is if you happen to travel to Europe or the US…or Hong Kong…with any regularity, that you buy these devices there.

You’ll probably save money (especially in the US) and you won’t be stuck waiting for months on end.

    • Random72, just a bit of clarification here, we actually don’t sell any WiFi only version of tablets. We sell only 3G versions, which also include the ability to connect to a WiFi network. Those versions of devices usually come out some time after the WiFi only version has been released. impassibility

    • As far as I can tell, no – Rogers does not sell tablets unless they are 3G/4G enabled. Look at their website – the only tablets there are Rocket-enabled (or whatever silly marketing name they gave to 3g/4g) ones. Do you really think Rogers is just sitting around twiddling their thumbs waiting for other providers in other countries to get awesome devices while they end up getting them months and months later? Of COURSE not, that’s ridiculous.

I never said that there’s a limited appeal with wifi-only tablets in Canada. What I said was, we aren’t a high demand market, at least in comparison to the US, pretty much due entirely to the fact that our population is 1/10 that of the US. And this is why it takes us so long to get the latest and greatest phones, too. Let’s crunch some numbers. According to Rogers’ own website, they had 7.3 million wireless subscribers as of 2007 (source: http://your.rogers.com/aboutrogers/newsroom/wirelessmediainfo/overview.asp) – let’s be generous, and say that number is up to 10 million now. Verizon, on the other hand, has over 100 million subscribers (source: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2388922,00.asp – that article also notes that AT&T is a close runner up with almost 99 million). So really, is it any surprise that the US gets the hottest new phones before we do? I’m not saying this is a good thing. But at the same time, I really doubt it’s Rogers dragging their feet on this (or Bell, or Telus. At best, those companies get their new phones a few weeks, MAYBE a month before Rogers does). I’m putting the blame about 90% on Samsung and other manufacturers, and the other 10% on Rogers’ strict testing and bloatware additions (which is where I think the extra time between Bell/Telus releases and Rogers’ releases come from).

  17. Still can’t find one, search on rogers.com for it shows nothing. Seems they have it in their minds but not in reality?

How can I buy one? Please provide a link to a BUY page? Does Rogers actually have stock?

    Thanks.

  18. Unfortunately, tablets are still way out of my price range. And if I do not have the money, then I don’t need it.

  19. None of the Rogers stores have an ETA, nor does Head Office. WTG, Rogers! Already signed up for the data sharing plan before it expired on Friday, yet still no tablet. :(
