My day as a Rogers Android
Ever since I was 13 years old, my dream has been to be a mascot at Disney World. More specifically, Goofy. So I jumped at the chance to be the Android mascot at Android TO.
On Wednesday, over 600 Android enthusiasts, developers and general mobile “tech geeks” attended Canada’s largest Android conference, Android TO. Rogers was the platinum sponsor of the event and I attended with my colleague @RogersMary. It was great to see so many questions come out of the sessions and the overall vibe to the day was nothing short of exciting.
Key moments to the conference? In my opinion, the mascot’s energetic personality and love for life stole the show. But don’t take my word for it. Check out this video of my day as the Android mascot (filmed entirely on the Android-powered HTC Jetstream LTE tablet) and see for yourself:
I know what you’re all thinking and yes, I really did proactively sign up to do this.
Was it hot? Of course (you should have seen how frizzy my hair was by the end of the day).
Was it a pain to get in to? Pain…well not really, but definitely challenging by myself in a small bathroom in the back of the speakers lounge. Definitely a sight.
Did it hurt when I was rushing to get to the stage for the closing remarks and accidently tripped over part of the Rogers booth, fell, only to end up stranded and stuck on my back with flailing limbs like a turtle flipped over on his shell? Aside from a few bruises on my shins, a slight back issue the day after, and sore abs from laughing hysterically, not really. *Quick shout out to those who ended up helping me up.Thank you!*
After all this, would I do it again? IN A HEART BEAT!
The best part was that people had no sweet clue who I was. As you saw, I was the life of the party. Have never had so many high-fives in my life.
Two other parts of the day, aside from the sessions, that deserve an honourable mention:
- The “OS Update” dessert bar, provided by Cukor, which obviously included cupcakes, doughnuts, éclairs and of course, Android-shaped gingerbread cookies,
- The #Harthfest after party. Everyone had an amazing time.
Thanks again to all the organizers and volunteers for putting on such a great event and giving me the opportunity to move one step closer to my Walt Disney World dream. We’re already planning and looking forward to next year.
If you could dress up like a mascot, which one would you be?

Awesome dude! Wish i knew about this event before. Only heard about it on the day and it was too late to get off work. Glad you had a blast!
Ya it was pretty cool. Be sure to attend next year – such a great Android event.
I’ve always wanted to be a Baby Blue Dragon with a head that smells like mushrooms :)
Keep the dream alive Jessica. You never know when someone will come and grant you your wish.
Hah! Looks like tons of fun.
It was a blast!!
Great video! That was you inside the costume Melanie! I had no idea. (OK, I did know but it’s fun to pretend that I didn’t!)
Great post, Melanie!
Thanks also to Rogers for sponsoring #AndroidTO!
I just realized that your Android suit would make for a killer Halloween costume today :P
Haha ya it would have been good…but it really was quite hot. And, as I mentioned with the tripping, it wasn’t overly easy to see out of. But yes, it would have been a great costume.
