Coming to an Xbox near you: Rogers on Demand

I’m a huge Xbox fan, and have been for a very long time; I was at one of the launch parties for the first console way back in 2001! It’s the most important part of my home entertainment experience: from blockbuster releases and independent games to custom portals and behind the scenes videos, the console is the centerpiece of my home video experience. As such, I am really thrilled to be involved in one of our most anticipated new projects.

Here at Rogers, we’re always exploring opportunities to bring you the content you love in new and exciting ways. With that in mind, we are excited to announce that Rogers On Demand will be coming to the Xbox 360 in time for the holidays!

  1. This is pretty cool! I was just wondering if this will be in Standard Def or High Def?

  2. Will using Rogers on Demand count towards the bandwidth limits ? If so, how much bandwidth will watching an hour of HD content on my xbox use?

    • Hello, Walter! Like any other video streaming site, customers are responsible for their bandwidth usage. As of launch, the RODO on Xbox experience will offer content in standard definition.

  3. Having access to ROD on my Xbox is all well and good, but streaming anything takes up valuable bandwidth instead of being part of my cable TV package. I already download heavily, game online and use Netflix, and I hit my cap pretty much every month! I can’t afford to go up a tier so I’m stuck trying to keep below the cap so I’m not hit with overage charges.

With Rogers offering this new way to go over my cap, my question is: is there going to be any increases in the caps, which are already ridiculously low considering TekSavvy who use your network can offer 300GB at the same speed as the Extreme package for only 42.95 compared to 59.99!!

  4. woo, that’s some uber stuff right there.

be neat if you could change the voice activation from “xbox” to “computer”

  5. The biggest question I have: will shows/movies watched on ROD through xBox count towards my bandwidth cap? Thanks.

  6. Can you tell me will everything that is avaible on rogers ondemand online be avaible on this new platform?

    • Hi Jayme! Program availability on the Xbox is an ongoing process, and we are always working to bring as much content as possible onto our platforms for you to enjoy. Currently the offering does differ depending on the platform being accessed, but be sure to keep checking back for new additions!

  7. This would be awesome IF the streaming from the X-box didn’t count towards your bandwidth caps.
Better off watching from my set-top box (no limit).
    So close but no cigar

  8. What’s the point when it counts towards my bandwidth? I’m already stressed looking at my bandwidth usage near the end of the month. Time to push up your limits to be competitive Rogers, Teksavvy and Acanac offers cable internet with more or ultd bandwidth, and with new services like these, you have to figure out a way to make this not count towards our bandwidth limit or increase bandwidth across the board.

  9. This is pretty awesome! It would be awesome-er (yes that’s a word now), if I could use my 360 as a PVR. Is this an already included feature or do you know, if this is something being worked on?

    • Hi Hazik,

While we are putting a major focus on TV Anywhere content to keep up with the demand of the evolving TV viewer, we still see a huge appetite for traditional viewing and will be making improvements to the platform through a new interactive program guide, as well as rolling out Whole Home PVR outside of the Atlantic region. So not yet, but on the radar :)

      • when is the new guide and whole home coming out? cant wait!

      • Wow Rogers Kelly, this is something Rogers should be advertising, and you guys really need to be pushing this quickly. The moment that Bell Fibe TV and their IPTV system is available I will dropping Rogers in a heart beat. That is unless you have this ready to go. Please Rogers, don’t let this slip to 2013 or later, this should have been here already

        • That’s good feedback AJ – as Edward mentioned, we’re constantly working to add more features and content, so feedback posted here will be shared with internal teams.

    • Optik TV is pretty much the only option in NA but sadly thats in BC

This is a very cool feature that i was looking forward to. However I am currently not a rogers subscriber. I can’t see people leaving there service providers for this feature and this feature alone. (including myself) Wouldn’t it make more sense, as it is a pay service or add based, to have a broader paying customer base (ie: every xbox gold subscriber) rather than a feature to entice subscribers?

PS: my bandwidth cap is much higher than yours, which is a far better reason to use an internet/cable provider than a feature that sucks up bandwidth.

  11. Ok, so I have the new Xbox Dashboard, but in the apps section it says that ROD is “Coming Soon”. Any word on when it might be available?

      Hi Ian,
The Rogers On Demand app on Xbox 360® is coming soon this Holiday season. We’ll keep you posted!

  12. Hi , Im a big x-box 360 fan and have been very pumped ever since EA 2011 when i found out the ROD is comming to x-box but i am not with rogers right now , is there going to be a way i can use ROD with microsoft points to rent movies or anyother way to get a somthing out of this without havinge to pay for cable i dont even watch

    • RogersNicolas says: December 7th, 2011 a 9:55am

      Hi Tyler,
Unfortunately, this app is available for Rogers customers who have an Xbox LIVE Gold membership and a Rogers On Demand Online account.

  13. Hey guys, quick question.

Im not a Rogers subscriber nor is Rogers even offered in my area as a cable or internet option. Is there any flat fee subscription I can pay to get access to ROD, and if so/not, what kind of content can I expect to receive as a non-Rogers customer (or one that is maybe paying some sort of low flat monthly fee)? Or am I completely shut out here?

I’d love to throw some money at you guys monthly to get some content. We stopped paying for Cable TV a while ago because of our work schedules. The Internet and Netflix have provided ever since, but ROD sounds like exactly what we want if we can get it.

      Hi Ryan,
You’d have to be a Rogers customer with a Xbox LIVE Gold membership and a Rogers On Demand Online account to have access to this service.

      • So… theres no way for me just to sign up for On Demand and pay a monthly fee to get access? I figured there would be something, anything, since even having a Rogers cellphone gives you more access to ROD than not.

That kinda sucks. Would you be so kind as to pass the suggestion along then that you guys could make buckets of money selling access subscriptions to the service? Surely it cant be that hard to just bill me 10 or 20 bucks a month for a Rogers account (heck, give me a fake cellphone number and pretend Ive got a phone) to get access. I know when the service hits the Xbox in a week or two I certainly wont be the only one who is curious about this.

      • I second this request, Rogers is not available in my area and you folks are in a position to be the Hulu of Canada here. Jump on the bandwagon now and get a head start on the competition, plus expand your consumer base. Because lets face it, most of Canada aren’t Rogers customers. Or you can ignore the request and people will just continue to pirate the content where everybody looses.

        • i know what you mean the only way im getting this is my parents account whereas my prepaid account doesnt apply to this extra feature

  14. What’s the specific date for the on demand app to be released on the xbox?

  15. I got told frrom rogers tech support that the app for rogers on demand for xbox is supposed to release dec 9 2011 is this true ?

  16. This being in standard definintion and counting towards my bandwidth cap are the reasons I’ll stick with Netflix, which is too bad because it’s a great idea. I hope you will reconsider those two elements of the service.

  17. So another words its still not released for awhile then ?

    • RogersNicolas says: December 9th, 2011 a 12:08pm

Another words for: it’s not released yet but we’ll keep you posted as soon as it is! ;)

      • hi rogersNicholas i hate to be a pain but how come this app is taking so slow to release like ppl in uk already have tv apps on their xbox and some do in the us 2 so yah if rogers wants to be the prime cable service in canada they need to speed things up like i personally think this app should have bin released 3 days ago with the dashboard like honestly lol but it will be cool to check it out when its released thank you guys so much for this awsome app …..

        sincerly

        kyle..

  18. So your launching a stream media service to your customers with the worst data caps in Canada, sounds like a cash grab to me. How are customers with 60GB limits suppose to use this service? Trust me after using Netflix for over a year I promise you this won’t work with the current data caps. I still don’t understand why Shaw and Telus on the West Coast can offer high bandwidth (30Mbps – 250Mbps) , higher data caps (250GB-Unlimited) at lower prices then Rogers.

Also, SD content? are you kidding. Lame.

  19. This is great I just saw it on the xbox dashboard i thought it was out alreday but seems its not. The only problem, as stated elsewhere, is the fact that it uses up our bandwidth which makes it suck. I struggle to keep under my monthly allowance of 100gb for extreme which used to be 80gb and was even harder to stay under. And thats for over 60$ a month which is a lot. Rogers and other companies have to get with the times. The future will rely heavily on bandwidth. It already does, but rogers is holding the future back. It was sad but not so suprising to see all the other comments about people having bandwidth problems. We are all suffering from the same problem. Regular activity these days uses a lot of bandwidth. I love what microsoft is doing with the xbox and how rogers is supporting it but you need to come up with a way to make it not cost as much bandwidth, or to give people much more bandwidth than what we currently get. Hopefully the next xbox that comes out will have this sort of integration right from the begining and maybe then it can be used like a rogers hd box and i can watch all my tv and do everything right off the system. Thats the future. At least the one i want.

  20. just tied the app & i have to say it needs work. it keeps on displaying service unavalible when you pause for more than 30secs. & it doesnt have enough content to to appeal to everyone.
