Sweet song o’mine: Rogers launches all new ringbacks platform
The first time I ever heard a ringback, I was very confused. I called a coworker and instead of hearing that familiar ringing sound, I heard a U2 song. I immediately hung up thinking I called the wrong number.
Ringbacks — the ability to set music to play when someone calls you instead of them hearing that boring “ring ring” sound – are a popular way to express your musical style.
If you’re a fan of ringbacks or interested in trying them out, we recently re-launched our ringbacks platform to include some new plans and features that make them easier than ever to use.
What’s new with ringbacks?
- Super Shuffle – Now you can set your entire library of ringbacks to play at random every time someone calls. You can entertain your callers by choosing from thousands of hot new releases in categories such as Comedy, Sports, R&B, Rock and Hip Hop.
- Play To All Callers – Really loving that new Lady Gaga song? This setting allows you to set your song-of-the-moment to play to all of your callers.
- Voice Greeting – A three second voice greeting is now played before the ringback tone begins letting callers know they are about to hear a ringback (This would have been especially helpful for my first ringback experience!)
- Block List – You can now block callers from hearing your ringback by simply adding them to the block list – especially helpful if you don’t want to startle Grandma with the latest Eminem song when she calls
- urMusic – ringbacks are integrated into urmusic.ca, making it a one-stop music shop.
How do I get them?
You can text “ringbacks” to 555. In seconds you’ll receive a text message containing a link to join. If you click the link, you can check out the plans and follow the steps to set it up.
You can also sign up on the web by going to www.urMusic.ca/ringbacks. Click on Membership Info, select your plan and follow the steps to set up your ringback.
How much are they?
There are two options: A $1 pack gets you the monthly ringback service and first tone free’ additional tones are $2 each. There is also a $3 bundle that gets you the ringback service and two tones every month (with this option, the first month is free). The cost is added to your voice plan. You can cancel your ringbacks membership at any time.
For more information on ringbacks, visit this site or check out the FAQs here.
Do you have a ringback? If so, what’s your song of choice? What song would you set as your ringback?

So I gotta pay money so people calling me can hear music, no thanks I don’t know how people sign up for this
Hey George,
Ringbacks are not for everyone, but they can be fun in certain situations. A friend of mine once made “Kokomo” by the Beach Boys her ringback while she was on her honeymoon in some tropical destination :)
Just a friendly reminder to the ADULTS out there…musical ringtones and ringbacks don’t look (or sound) good to prospective employers/references and the like.
Thanks for the word of caution Gere. Definitely something to keep in mind.
Way to fail at adding a new feature, Rogers.
Next time, don’t roll this out automatically, especially to business accounts. My clients don’t want to hear your choice of what music you think I enjoy.
And also, an easier way of disabling it would be a good idea, too. It took me 2 weeks and several phone calls before I could turn it off.
Thanks for the feedback Anthony. Sorry you had a frustrating experience trying to disable ringbacks. For future, here’s how you do it:
From your mobile device select the Rogers Mall, click Ringbacks, then Manage My Ringbacks or from a computer visit urMusic.ca/Ringbacks. Scroll to the Ringbacks Menu and select My Profile. Your My Profile page features an ON|OFF button, select OFF.
Will the paid service have words before the music plays? “Enjoy this ringback” etc? If so? Not interested.
Hi Brooke,
By default, yes. But you can turn it off too.
We recommend you leave this feature on as it quickly alerts callers that they are about to hear a ringback and shouldn’t hang up! However, if you want to turn it off, simply log in and under Menu, select My Profile. Then select OFF under Voice Greeting.
Can u get this on the iPhone
Hi Gabe. Yes, you can get ringbacks on your iPhone. Just text “ringbacks” to 555 or sign up on the web by going to http://www.urMusic.ca/ringbacks.
This is nothing more than a blatant cash grab. Rogers never ceases to amaze me.
“I immediately hung up thinking I called the wrong number.”
Exactly. So why would somebody use this?
Hi Tom,
As I mentioned above to George, ringbacks are not for everyone, but some people find it a fun way to express their musical taste. There is a three second voice greeting now added before ringbacks which lets callers know they are about to hear a ringback so now, anyone who experiences a ringback for the first time will know exactly what it is.
i have ringbacks as part of a data plan, but i didnt notice it untill someone called me and told me,, how do i turn it off? i went to the website and it says i must enter my phone number to get a one time pasword, but it wont accept my number as vailid.
Hi Gaelan,
Ringbacks are now part of all Value Packs, but if you don’t want them enabled, here’s how to turn them off:
From your mobile device select the Rogers Mall, click Ringbacks, then Manage My Ringbacks.
Or, from a computer visit urMusic.ca/Ringbacks. Scroll to the Ringbacks Menu and select My Profile. Your My Profile page features an ON|OFF button, select OFF.
RogersMiranda,
You’re kidding right? You automatically add a $1 a month service to all new data plans – without telling people they are getting it – and then when they come to ask you how to not spend money on something they don’t want, you tell them how to turn off the service, but not how to unsubscribe it? All so that they can continue paying a dollar a month, now for something they aren’t even using, and roger’s can enjoy an extra $12 a year screwing someone over.
It appears as though you need to UNSUBSCRIBE from ringbacks to actually not hand Roger’s money for nothing…which would be fine if this was actually possible on the website. You canb almost do it by going to urMusic.ca/Ringbacks, getting a ‘temporary password’ by giving them your phone number and receiving a text, clicking on the RIngbacks menu, then clicking on the membership menu, then clicking on “For more information about your membership or to unsubscribe click here”.
Seems not so bad, I mean, all lot of annoying work to put your customers through to get 12 bucks a year, but the real kicker is that everytime I attempt to confirm my unsubsciption (now a word – thanks for something rogers!) it gives me a nice: “We are currently experiencing problems, please try your request again later. Error Code: 100″
They’ve been ‘currently experiencing problems’ for a day.
I guess it’s time to call rogers.
again.
And i
Hi Terry,
Just to clarify, ringbacks are now included as part of all Value Packs. There is no additional charge. If you add a Value Pack to your account, you get ringbacks. If you don’t want the service, you can turn it off.
Sorry about the error on the site. Try again later. If you still experience issues, I suggest calling tech support. They’ll be able to help you.
Shame on Rogers, yet again implementing something we have to opt out of. Is Aunt Mabel going to surf through pages of options to turn off a feature she doesn’t remember turning on? Not likely. Rogers, count the negative vs. positive responses to this and do the right thing. DISABLE IT!
Ah…Thanks for the reply miranda.
So it’s just annoying, but at least it’s not expensive!
Hah. Well, to each their own. As I’ve said before, ringbacks are not for everyone :)
What’s the default u2 song?
Hi Brett,
It’s actually a song called Never Again by a Canadian band named Midway State. Here’s their video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApMQ9M5RIEk
I was so confused when this service got turned on – and so was every one who called me! I was very unhappy to learn from a Rogers rep on the phone that to turn it on, I’d have to suffer logging into an external-to-rogers.com website to disable my ‘membership.’
When I eventually passed the seemingly-broken Captcha test to get the site to send me a login code (took 5 tries!) I got an Error – ‘error 100′ when I clicked on CONFIRM link to unsubscribe (at https://ringbacks.urmusic.ca/RogersRBTWeb/#MembershipMgmt)
This is terrible – I need to get rid of these silly ringbacks and simply have a normal ringing tone for people calling me so that they don’t get confused and question whether they dialed the correct number but am not able to remove myself from your annoying ‘service’ – which, though not much, is costing me $1 a month apparently.
Not impressed,
Qasim
Hi Qasim,
There’s two ways to turn off the ringback:
From your mobile device select the Rogers Mall, click Ringbacks, then Manage My Ringbacks.
Or, from a computer visit urMusic.ca/Ringbacks. Scroll to the Ringbacks Menu and select My Profile. Your My Profile page features an ON|OFF button, select OFF.
Also, just to clarify, ringbacks are now included as part of all Value Packs. There is no additional charge per month. If you add a Value Pack to your account, you get ringbacks. If you don’t want the service, you can turn it off.
OK, so, since Rogers KNOWS that ringbacks are NOT for everyone, why would they THINK that they should just automatically enroll people into something so gimmicky and childish as ringtones. Dont know about anyone else, but to me it just seems like someone is trying to protect their job by trying to justify such a horrible “service” that Rogers so lovingly provides us for “free”. Thanks Rogers.
Using a cell phone, when one calls another cell number and that other cell has this fancy ring back feature enabled, the caller is immediately paying for air time rather than being granted the opportunity to hang up after say 2 to 3 rings. Is that a true statement?
No. Airtime is charged once the call is answered, not while it is ringing. A ringback is the same as a standard ring, just a different sound (ie: music of the customer’s choice).
