RedBoard video: The Xperia X10 experience

Today, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 officially joins Rogers’ growing family of Android-powered smartphones.

As part of our RedBoard video series, Rogers’ Michael Nguyen walks me through some of the cool features of this device including Timescape, Mediascape and the 8.1-megapixel camera. We also talk about OS upgrades and how to get one of these in your hands today.

Will you be getting the Xperia X10? Submit a comment below. And, if you have suggestions for future RedBoard videos, send me a tweet at @RogersMiranda.

  1. Nope. I just don’t get smartphones at all. Do you really want to tote something that large and fragile around all the time? My current cellphone can fit in my pocket. And I certainly don’t need to access email anywhere/anytime.

    • FYI, most smartphones CAN fit into your pocket, and a smartphone is much more than having the ability to access email. Smartphones now have the capabilities of a netbook (or a laptop/computer 5 years ago) with a 1GHZ processor. Snapdragon has announced that it’ll be releasing a 1.5GHZ processor by the end of this year.

So basically you can carry around your laptop in your pocket without the bulk. It’s all about convenience, getting the information you want/need in your hand in an instant. I have the N1, I use it to listen to music (I don’t need my ipod nano anymore) I use it to play games (good bye gameboy) I can download e-books and read it when I’m commuting on the train to and from work. So now when I go out, I only need to carry my phone with me.

The thing I depend on my phone is its ability to organize files, I can keep track of my diets, by budgets, finance etc. on my phone. Basically I can do much much more than with a ‘dumb phone’.

  2. its a very nice video blog showcasing your new products.

    Keep up the great work.

I am a Veteran Customer back from the Cantel days.

It sure would be nice if the new “proud to present” product was on the website. The only think I see is an EXPIRED pre-sale offer…

I like that you asked about the upgrade path. It’s nice to know that you are starting to take software upgrades seriously. However, from what he said, it sounds like there is only one planned update to the OS, which we can probably assume will be v2.1 but nothing past that.

  5. Happy you guys are branching out with great devices…. but…. I have had 3 different people give me answers about doing a HUP to this. Not that I could becuase there is one store in Victoria that has this in stock and even a number of Rogers Stores I called had no idea about the device. It is pretty frustrating as I have had many good experiences with Rogers.

      Hi Chris,

Sorry you’ve had problems trying to get the X10. I’m looking into this and hope to get you more info later today.

  6. I was actually really excited about this phone, but the only thing that’s holding me back is the lack of multitouch… I’d definitely jump on it if it was confirmed for a future update, but rumours are saying that it’s a hardware limitation :(

I’d buy a Nexus One from Google, but Rogers isn’t offering me any credit if I buy my own unsubsidized handset. Why should Rogers charge me the same as a person who is costing them ~$400 by buying a subsidized handset?

  7. And by the way Miranda, do you have any information on whether or not Rogers will be carrying the HTC Desire (basically a re-skinned Nexus One)? Or any plans to offer a subsidy + contract like T-Mobile USA is doing?

  8. Well I was told that the x10 wasn’t available when I called.

    • RogersMiranda says: April 16th, 2010 a 10:06am

      Hi Jeff,

Sorry you had trouble getting the X10! I reached out to you directly via email to get some more information.

  9. I am really disappointed by the lack of a multi-touch screen
I would have loved the X10 if sony had more foresight about android and its upgrades
Please bring phones such as Samsung Galaxy S and HTC desire to Rogers
I would renew my contract for 3 years for either of those phones – HTC desire is out now! and sports android 2.1 already – Please bring these phones to Rogers as the Xperia is a bit of a disappointment

    • Totally agreed.. it looks like Samsung did a much better job on the i9000 Galaxy S. Sony Ericsson was very shortsighted (dare I say stupid?) to not include multitouch on such a high-end and expensive phone. On an entry-level phone it may be understandable.. but definitely not on a flagship model.

I definitely hope that Rogers gets the Galaxy S soon!

  10. Miranda, you’re a cutie–maybe Rogers isn’t so bad. :D

  11. Is there any way we can confirm multitouch for the X10 because rumours are spreading it will be out with the 2.1 Update … but

    • RogersMiranda says: April 19th, 2010 a 11:06am

      Hello,

We’ve confirmed with Sony Ericsson that multi-touch capabilities will not be enabled in the X10 with future software upgrades.

  12. Could you tell me how to enable the tethering on the x10? I just got one from a rogers store. Thanks for the info.

    • RogersMiranda says: April 21st, 2010 a 8:35am

      Hi Edgar,

Have you called Customer Care? They should be able to help walk you through the process.

  13. Just a little comment for those interested in this phone : The screen gets filled of finger traces really fast… You can also see it in the youtube video.

  14. What other high end Androids is Rogers planning on offering? The X10 has nice specs but…
And the Acer Liquid E, whenever it launches, sounds more mid range even with its above average specs (at least its got 2.1).
Will Rogers get the HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy S or Galaxy S Pro? I bet the Pro would do well. Us Android afficionados need and want a quality phone. Please give us some.

    • RogersMiranda says: April 21st, 2010 a 8:36am

      Hi Nico,

Sorry, we can’t comment on possible future device launches but thanks for letting us know what Android devices are at the top of your list. Appreciate the feedback :)

  15. Lovin’ this phone

I purchased the black one and got the white one for my girlfriend.

Could anyone from Rogers comment when you’ll be offering accessories for this phone? I would like to get a proper case and screen protector.

Also, is it possible to purchase a rocket stick and use my current data plan? It would save me the trouble of attaching a long usb cable for tethering.

I also would like to share my wish list for future handsets:
    1. HTC Evo 4G
    2. Samsung Galaxy S
    4. HTC Incredible
    3. Any Windows Phone 7 handset

  16. @Dan

the HTC EVO 4g (built for sprints 4g wimax and 3g cdma network)
and the HTC Incredible (built for verizons cdma network)
are not compatible with any carrier in canada now
again let me stress the list of Good phones you should be getting to keep loyalty strong

    1. Samsung Galaxy S
    2.HTC Desire
    3. Any touchscreen android based phone with a slide out keyboard

Many people are fans of the physical keyboard but we do not have very many choices for a good android phone…

    • RogersMiranda says: April 23rd, 2010 a 9:29am

Thanks Alan. Great list! While I can’t comment on possible future device launches, it’s good to know what’s on the Android wish-list :)

    • @Alan

Yeah.. I knew they were CDMA devices, but I think it’s still good to mention to Rogers what people want so maybe they can get something similar to those devices or target a GSM variant, if it were to be made by the phone manufacturer.

I do agree with your list and I really think it would be wise of Rogers to push Android.

Well.. really, I just want them to keep being a leader in offering the leading technology in cellular devices no matter what the OS.

It bodes well and gives a great reputation of Rogers when they are known to have been the first North American carrier of a new device like the X10. I want them to keep doing that.

I also want to add to my wish list, the newly announced Dell Smartphones: http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/22/dells-lightning-thunder-flash-smoke-and-more-a-roundup/

I especially like the Thunder (WP7), and the Lightning (Android).

With all that being said, it’s also important that Rogers keeps ongoing support to these devices. It would be nice if Rogers can offer software/firmware upgrades as quickly as possible.

      • I agree Dan
It is very good to offer the latest devices as they launch
and also very good to communicate solid dates for upgrades
Instead of communicating a date such as mid 2010 for the magic 2.1 upgrade – ask the manufacturer to provide a solid time frame for updates – for example when android 2.2 comes out – I would like to know when it would be available for my new phone I would like to know a definite time frame like Sept 2010 or Nov 2010 not q4 or q3 2010 or late 2010 – that just leaves me wondering when

  17. Why is everyone concerned with 2.1 that offers poor picture quality, when in reality we should all be hoping to get the new OS 2.2 Froyo Android release.
And the HTC Desire as 100% a superior smartphone over the X10,

Rogers, Just give us a selection to choose from not just a choice of 1 android from last year specs.

Thank you and I hope this gets posted

    • Well the reason we are concerned is because 2.2 is not even leaked yet let alone released….
Maybe you should walk before you run

  18. Ozzie 2.1 is confirmed but multiple official sources from se and rogers have both confirmed that multi touch is not possible due to hardware limitations

  19. X10 with Android 1.6 is a sad attempt by Rogers for Android offering. I just don’t understand why people at Rogers helm would make decisions like that, specially when there is no other real Android choice by Rogers. Arriving late at the party and not even dressed up for it? What’s the excuse? … Oh I know, that would be us, the Canadian customers who will settle for mediocare handsets and pay top dollars for the service any day? Any Leafs fan out there? It’s the same mentality and the corporate marketers know it too well. Why offer the top of the line when you get masses to celebrate mediocrity. Well, you can count me out until I can see better choices.

    • RogersMiranda says: April 26th, 2010 a 4:09pm

      Hi Sean,

Appreciate your opinion on the X10. Just wanted to comment on a couple points.

As for 1.6, we’ve confirmed with Sony Ericsson that the X10 will be upgradeable to future versions of the Android operating system later this year.

Also, with respect to your comment about Android choice by Rogers, I just wanted to point out that Rogers was the first in Canada to carry an Android-powered device and we actually offer this country’s largest selection of Android devices including the HTC Dream, HTC Magic, LG Eve, Samsung Galaxy Spica, Google’s Nexus One. We also have more Android devices on the way including the Acer Liquid e

      • theninjasquad says: April 26th, 2010 a 4:13pm

You guys need to stop saying that about the Nexus One. You don’t offer the Nexus One. It is compatible on your network, but is available for purchase through Google.

      • Thanks Miranda. … Let me clarify. Why does Rogers lag behind the market in general (both inside and outside Canada) when it comes to latest technology?

X10 is the first phone from Rogers with Snapdragon 1 GHz processor (again sadly with an old OS). HTC Dream and Magic are still running on Qualcomm 528 MHz and display resolution of 320×480 while 480×800 top Androids go to … sorry not to Rogers customers, except for X10 of course. … [I have to agree with theninjasquad, Nexus One is not offered by Rogers. It's just compatible with the network. Yes, I'm waiting for Android 2.2 Froyo in 3-4 weeks before I take the plunge and buy one for full price, no thanks to Rogers!]

Don’t take me wrong. I’m not putting down those phone for their CPU clock rate or mid-range display resolution. I’m just saying if you consider the range of hardware offerings from Rogers, you’ll be hard pressed to find anything at the high end of “today” technology standards (either hardware or software). How long have we had Windows Mobile 6.5.* out there? Does Rogers have any WinMo version past 6.1? How about HTC HD2 T8585 ? Another nice hardware for WinMo users missing from Rogers roster. How about HTC Desire for Android fans? BTW, both of which running on Snapdragon 1 GHz. … I can go on. Ok, BB Bold 9700 is an exception. That’s probably the latest you get from RIM for BB users, thank you! And so is iPhone but don’t get me started on that!!!

Anyway, I hope you see what I mean. The top end of Rogers range falls short of being cutting edge for the most part.

Please expand your offerings and bring us the latest in technology. I will be the first thank you sincerely and remain a loyal customer. Give people choice. Not everyone wants the latest and greatest with all the bells and whistles. But for those who do, Rogers is a bit of a disappointment right now. Thanks for providing this opportunity for voicing our concerns.

        • RogersMiranda says: April 27th, 2010 a 9:24am

@ninjasquad and @Sean – Thanks for clarifying my Nexus One comment above. You are both correct. To clarify, the Nexus One is compatible with Rogers network and can be purchased through Google.

Sean – I appreciate your thorough comment on what you’d like to see from Rogers. It’s great feedback. It’s great to see what’s making the top of your technology wish-list and I’ll definitley be passing this feedback onto the team. Thanks!

  20. I think people are missing the point of this phone. The average person does not care about android 1.6 2.1 2.2, they just want a great phone experience.

I purchased one of these a few weeks ago, and my primary reasons for purchasing were these.

    1. Android
    2. Best in class 8.1 MegaPixel Camera.
    3. 1 Ghz SnapDragon Processor (should run Flashplayer when it’s available)
    4. 4″ Screen
    5. Excellent sound quality
    6. Excellent build quality.
    7. Above average call quality.
The hardware in this device is on par with any of the current wave of new Android phones, except the camera, which is vastly superior to any other device’s camera.

I think people are not realizing how good the camera is in this device, it is very close to being as good as a standalone point and shoot camera. I think they’re missing the point of this device as a “lifestyle” device.

I am a very technical person, and I really would love to see 2.1 or 2.2, but it is coming so I can wait. Sony’s custom skin seems to have many of the features of Android 2.1, and I’ve not found any apps that don’t work on it so I don’t see the big deal, 1.6 isn’t really that bad. The device is responsive, renders web pages well and is very usable.

Multitouch would be nice, but it’s not really essential.

I’ve really enjoyed this phone since I’ve got it.
