No more ties: Snag a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 for dad
Spoiler alert: Your dad has enough ties.
With Father’s Day coming up this Sunday, we wanted to help you make it the best year ever for you and dad. So, we’re excited to unveil our first-ever RedBoard contest where we’re giving away a brand new Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 – one of the coolest touchscreen smartphones available today with Timescape, Mediascape and an 8.1-megapixel camera. (Check out our demo of the Xperia X10 here).
Here’s how the contest works:
- In 100 words or less, tell us why your dad deserves an Xperia X10. Or, if you’re a father, tell us why you deserve to win the device.
- You must submit your entries via the comments field below.
- The contest is open as of right now and will run until Thursday, June 17 at noon ET.
- The RedBoard team will narrow down the entries to our favourite five submissions and publish them on the blog Thursday afternoon.
- Later that afternoon, the winner’s name will be drawn at random from one of the top-five submissions and published on the blog.
Remember, creativity counts. You never know – if you win, your dad may just forgive you for crashing the family car when you were 17.
Update (June 17, 1 :12 p.m.): The entry period for our first-ever RedBoard contest has come to an end – and we’re blown away by your entries. We got poems, personal anecdotes and even some tongue-in-cheek submissions, so thanks for your participation!
But we had to narrow it down to five finalists (below). The next step will be a random draw from the five finalists, which we’ll be announcing right here at 4 pm ET.
Here are the finalists in order of submission:
Matt:
My father has had a rough year. He was let go from his job after 15 years at the same company, due to “restructuring.” As a slap in the face, his boss fudged some paperwork and tried to deny him severance. My dad had to go through his union to fight for what he was entitled to. During all of this, his father passed away. It wasn’t a sudden death, but it wasn’t expected either. Due to losing his job, my dad no longer has a cell phone, and I think the Xperia would be a perfect fit for him.
Jessica Y.:
Father’s Day is around the corner,
I circle it on the calendar with a pen.
A new cell phone for my dad would be great,
so why does he deserve a Xperia X10?
My dad works about 80 hours a week,
and has been doing this for many years.
He has an old, chunky cell phone,
that usually causes laughter among his peers.
He has supported my sisters and I,
tuition payments for university and school.
I believe the Xperia X10 will be a sweet gift,
that’ll cause him to laugh, cry, scream and drool.
Love you, Dad.
Daniel:
I think I would rather have a smartphone than a tie.
Can you imagine the conversations at work around the water cooler.
Me: “Nice tie John! … Oh me? I got THIS. (holding it under my chin with a picture of a tie hanging on the screen.)
Everyone else: …. (insert the pregnant sound of silent envy)
Me: Yeah, baby… Boo-Yah! No, yeah, I mean, I do like the tie… is that polyester? I had a couch made of that. Nice. Seriously – hold on, my tie is ringing…
Shilpa A:
Patient calm listener
Quietly working away
Never ever complaining
Always doting on his kin
My father is my hero
A tanka for the greatest man ever from the luckiest daughter ever
Rob:
With a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 my father would realize “Android” is not just a robot in Star Wars. He would friend me on Facebook, guffaw at my inane tweets, text his grandchildren, and maybe, just maybe, get rid of his pager. My father would download Nana Mouskouri ringtones, take photos of rare birds, and never get lost in the woods in Maine again! He would embrace the new digital age and radiate an aura of hipness not seen since the days of his plaid polyester golf pants. Please Rogers, make my dad cool.
Update (June 17, 4 p.m.): And our winner is…Jessica Y! Congrats Jessica for your submission. We’ll be in touch shortly via email — and we hope you’ll send us a pic of your dad drooling over the Xperia X10. :)

Richard Bloom is a regular contributor to RedBoard.
Contest closes at 12:00 noon on June 17, 2010. Open to residents of Canada who are 18 years or older, excluding residents of Quebec. Tell us in 100 words or less, on the Rogers Redboard blog, why your father, or you (if you are a father), deserves a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 for father’s day. My dad needs an Xperia to show off pics of his beautiful granddaughter, play Farmville and check World Cup scores on the fly, and to get the call when the next grandchild is born.
My father should win this prize because of all the things he has done for me. I am a College student, my father has worked his entire life to give me the luxuries he believed I deserved. He has fought long and hard for me and always believed I would do something. This would be an awesome thing to be able to give to him. He is retiring in August, I can’t afford a great gift and even though it’s the thought that counts. This would be a wonderful gift. Something to give back for all his hard work.
Why MY dad ??
easy, he as been the best dad in the world for me
my mom pass away when i was young and he never let me down,
he make me travel and discover the world,
and is SOOO jealous of me having an X10
i think you should make my dad win because were going to be
the best duo ever with OUR X10 !
Thanks !
Sébastien
Its awesome that Rogers is looking out for all the Fathers! Due to the extreme generiosity of the fine folks @ Rogers, I know my Dad deserves a brand new Sony Xperia X10 simply because he has been a loyal customer to Rogers. He cuts a cheque to Rogers every month for the 4 wonderful services he purchases from Rogers…Cell, Cable, Internet and recently added to the line up…HOME PHONE!!! Thats like a grand slam (Let’s go Blue Jays Let’s Go…I had to add the shameful Rogers plug)! When you ask my Dad a question about Rogers, without hesitiation…he will scream 15% BUNDLING DISCOUNT!!!! Boy does he love Rogers, so much so that when he pays his monthly bills and gets into his grouchy bill paying mood like all Fathers do, when it comes to open up that wonderful Rogers envelope and look at that monthly bill total, I almost think a tear comes to his eye…not tears of sadness, rather a tear of joy. For Rogers has provided him and his beloved family another month of qualtiy service for a very reasonable cost.
In conclusion, if it wasn’t clear, my Father deserves a Sony Xperia X10, because he provides his children and wife, with the best telecommunications services that money can buy…ROGERS! And if you are outside, at the corner of Bloor and Mount Pleasant, and see a strange man drinking a cup of tea, singing songs of bundling discounts…don’t give him a dirty look, take a minute and listens to his hymns, because we can all learn from our elders.
Happy Fathers Day!!!
I think I deserve an Xperia cuz I LOVE new technology. My dad, on the other hand, not so much. He would get one of these and let it sit in a drawer. Me? No way. It’s gonna be used! As a father of twin boys, picture-taking chances are always present. And ever since my wife got a smart phone I’ve been chomping at the bit to update my shoebox-sized ‘portable’ cell phone. Hey, I said I LOVE new technology. I can’t necessarily AFFORD it! ;)
I am the father of a beautiful 3 year old boy, and I would love the chance to be able to take high res photos of my son using smile sensor, then upload those photos to online services such as facebook and picassa in a couple short steps. This phone would make documenting my childs life and sharingg it with family and friends worlds easier.
DOOODS AT ROGERS. My dad is the pwnsauce. We’ve been Rogers customers (internet, and cable obv) for a long time now… and been loving it. Weird thing… my dad has been designing wireless networks for years… yet he still hasn’t got a phone. With his new job at Ericsson, he’s definitely loving their new Sony devices… (MEBBE THE XPERIA X10 FOR EXAMPLE) and… seeing as I haven’t really got any ideas for gifts, this would be the SICKEST GIFT EVER. It would make his day for sure. Or maybe his month. If I’m lucky, maybe his year. If I’m lucky.
As the first-born I’ve always wondered how my father felt when I made my debut. Now I’m about to become a new father myself! The excitement has my stomach in knots. I am horribly impatient for my new baby to get here! I cannot wait to _instantly_ share beautiful high-resolution photos and heart-warming video with my dad and my family via Facebook and Twitter. The X10 is perfect for this, and with the HUGE colour screen I won’t need to carry photos to show my friends and co-workers, I’ll just pull out the X10, and let them see for themselves!
My dad should win the xperia because last week he found my motorola startac and think it’s a great phone. He needs to be dragged into the 21st century.
Congrats, Matt! You’re a finalist. We’ll be announcing the results at 4pm ET.
My daddy deserves an Xperia X10 because he would rather save every penny to help pay for…
… my professional licensing fees…
… my sister’s university tuition…
… my brother’s martial art classes…
than buy something for himself, such as a new phone to replace one that is many years old.
I need a wonderful father’s day gift to say “thank you!” to a wonderful father! =)
My dad deserves an Xperia X10 so that he can show my grandparents who are both sick, fantastic pictures of us. He’s been using a Motorola Razr for over 4 years and deserves something much better since he gives all of his phone upgrades to my sister and me. He never asks for anything extravagant or frivolous, and it would be nice for him to have something as great as the X10 for himself.
My husband deserves an Xperia X10 smartphone because he is a wonderful hands on dad to our 3 and 5 year old girls. He unfortunately travels alot with his work with DND and misses time with his girls. This phone would let him keep intouch with his girls and show them off to everyone he meets.
HI….What a great idea to honour Dad’s….Most times they get the “not so wonderful” gifts and Mom’s get the gifts that ROCK! Xperia X10 ….What a prize…My parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently, and at that time he suffered a stroke…..so we really did not celebrate the way we should for them…He is doing so much better….and I would love to give him something for Father’s day that was nice…..something that he would just be “WOW’ED” about!! This would be that !! I am on the recovery of a lost job from the company going under, and really could not get him something like this at this point….
I would love if he could “EXPER-ience…the EPERIA X 10!!! Memories to last a lifetime! Thanks
My husband deserves the Xperia X10 for a few reasons. One, he has been out of work for the last year and a half and has just finally been offered one! What a great way to celebrate by winning something after having a really horrible year and a half. Next, it would be so nice if for once HE got the newest and greatest thing. Our kids always come first with him so he will keep using the 3 pound phone he has had for the last 6 years so that the kids have their soccer, school trips and whatever else they need.
My Dad deserves an Xperia X10 because it’s about time that he gets something nice for himself! He has raised five kids ranging from 18 (me) to 32 years old, four of them as a single parent. He has always put us first, working hard to provide us with a good home, food and education. As we are growing up and moving around, having a quick connection to the internet will allow him to keep in closer contact with all of us and keep up with the latest news. It’s also about time he gets a camera that actually works!
My children told me about this contest and I didn’t even know what an xperia was. After some research I realized what an amazing piece of technology! I believe I deserve this smartphone because I don’t punish my kids (too much) when they come home with huge texting bills or call overages. I also provide for my family and I try not to take things too seriously. Lastly, I have been using an old 2 inch thick motorola for quite some time now, I think this would be a really cool gift from my kids, afterall-they helped me write this!
Although we are busy with our lives, we need to stop and take time to pay tribute to our fathers. Sometimes we get swallowed up in our everyday chores and don’t realize that time is passing quickly.
My Father means a lot to me. He has taught me things that not even public schools could’ve taught me. He gave me what he had when I was without. He fed me, clothed me, and supported my decisions (most of them) even if he disagreed. He is like my system of knowledge because this man is very intelligent too. He’s just so awesome it’s hard to imagine my life without him. He always remind me that I am a very lucky young man because some people don’t have fathers to teach them right from wrong and to support them. I keep that in mind all the time so I try not to take him for granted.
Therefore, by giving him the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, it’ll be a small part but meaningful way to say ‘Thank you’.
My dad deserves the Xperia X10 because after raising 5 kids he is out of touch with technology. He only got a cell phone himself last yr! I think after years of having provided for all of us and depriving himself of new things it would be exciting to be able to give him something new and fun. It would be so great to watch the kids teach him how to use it and see him showing all his buddys his latest toy. Just like he watched us growing up.
Fathers are very special, thanks for this opportunity!
My dad loves technology an is always wanting the new stuff that comes out. My mum on the other had could care less and is often nagging at my dad that it is a waste of money. My dad in turn never really gets his fill in technology. My mom is great and my dad is too and as a student, I wish I could give both of them more.
If I can win the Xperia X10 for my dad, he will be the envy of his friends without having my mum disagree.
If I win this, I can really give back to my dad for what he and my mom has provided for me as their child.
