  1. Just interested in knowing, what happens if I use more that 5 GB on the 5 GB plan? Is it just a soft cap with no overage fees with just speed thotting? or would I face overage fees? Thats the main question I have.

    Thanks in advance

    • RogersKeith says: May 28th, 2010 a 10:53pm

No overage fees or speed throttling. You can stack plans so your next plan kicks in as soon as your current one runs out.

  2. I have a Rogers iPhone with the 6G data plan — I would like to use this data plan with the iPad. Can you explain how customers can share this plan? Thank you.

    • RogersKeith says: May 28th, 2010 a 10:58pm

Hey Jay, there are no sharing options at this time but Rogers is on the record that this is something we’re considering. We’ll share more details when we can.

  3. I read on macnn.com that rogers charges a $35 initial activation fee. is that true? i couldn’t find any mention of it anywhere else.

i did receive my iPad just 20 minutes ago (it’s still in the box! too busy working) and i also got the rogers sim. since rogers still doesn’t offer 3G in Tofino after 2 years of iPhones on their network, it is very unlikely that i will use it though. Telus has managed to build out their 3G network from scratch and DOES offer 3G here. what gives?

for me that means waiting for telus to come up with an iPad plan and it also means that i’ll be jumping ship from rogers completely when the next iPhone hits.

it’s time to care about customers that are outside the big metropolitan areas. rogers has always been poor supporting us, i drop every second call (my friends on telus don’t have that problem) and the lack of updates to 3G just shows contempt for those of us not living in the big cities.

    • RogersKeith says: May 28th, 2010 a 10:56pm

No activation fee on these plans Tofino. Rogers is Canada’s proven network but we’re always investing in improvements spending hundreds of millions of dollars a year on our network.

      • Good to hear about the activation fee!

While i’m sure you spend a lot of money (and also making a lot more), you are spending all of that on the newest and best technology where you catch the most users – in the big city. My point was that you ARE ignoring small markets and yet take the same amount of money for a fraction of the service in rural areas.

  4. Thanks for Redboard forum for hinting that replacement cards are available at FutureShop/BestBuy/Apple. I just got one. It’s not free though. I paid $10 + tax for it. So, if it’s to be free, that memo didn’t get to FutureShop.

Anyway, the iTunes update was flawless and took a few seconds. Coming back to the iPad, though, the first 2 times I clicked View Account, it had some difficulty connecting. After that, it went ok.

I’ve been waiting for the actual activation to happen. It’s been over 2 min. I guess it’s because everybody is connecting today as well.

So I have a Rogers blackberry and my wife has an iPhone but we can’t share data so why would I do 3G on Rogers instead of Bell same price but slower network less hotspots (Starbuck’s). I am interested to see your response

    • RogersKeith says: May 29th, 2010 a 12:17am

Hey Randy. I don’t want to speak to other carriers’ shortcomings but with Rogers you get a proven network, a robust wifi program through Second Cup and on-device activation that allows you to switch plans or suspend your account for months when you don’t need it without having to call in to Care.

      • Randy Hayre says: May 29th, 2010 a 3:19am

I was saying Rogers has a slower network and less hotspots but hey out on the coast there are lot more Starbucks than Second Cups.

        • RogersKeith says: May 29th, 2010 a 3:42pm

Both networks use the same technology and the offer the same theoretical speeds. Difference is that Rogers network has been proven over years. Ours isn’t a new unproven network.

          • Also, Rogers has edge and GPRS as backup networks, just in case 3G connectivity fails. Bell/telus only have 3G

  6. RogersKeith,

FYI..You indicated that you could get a Micro Sim at no charge in an earlier post. I just got back from Best Buy, and they were charging $10. I went to a Rogers Plus outlet, and they didn’t have any and wasn’t sure what the price was.

    • RogersKeith says: May 29th, 2010 a 3:44pm

We’ve seen that comment a few times and are reaching out to these retailers to confirm that Rogers MicroSIMS should be free. Apologies for the confusion. .

      • A little slow there at reaching out, huh. Memo goes through pretty quickly.

None the less,, WHAT username and password am I supposed to use for the account. I see no account registration options described in the post above.

        • Hi Kristina – As per the image above, User Information is your first/last name and telephone number. Login information requires you to enter your email address and create then verify a password.

          Hope that helps.

  7. One big shout out to RogersKeith. I had problems with activation and he contacted me directly to help resolve it. I kinda appreciate that.

  8. Adam Halinaty says: May 29th, 2010 a 12:00am

Thanks, Keith! And the entire Rogers team!

I activated my 3G data plan today on my iPad wifi + 3G 64GB as soon as it arrived at 3pm.

The ONLY issue I had was it requires your credit card to be valid for a minimum of 2 months – why is this? Why not allow users to turn OFF auto-renewal.

No big deal though. Overall a seamless and great ecpeience and thanks for everything!

    • RogersKeith says: May 29th, 2010 a 3:49pm

Hey Adam. Glad activation went smoothly. Not sure about 2 months but think it’s to prevent customers from losing data unexpectedly when credit card expires.

  9. RogersKeith says: May 29th, 2010 a 12:18am

Sorry for that. They should be free at Best Buy. They’re not in Rogers locations yet but may be soon.

  10. Man I don’t want to sound cheap – but I think the $15 should probably be doubled to 500 mb – ipad consumes so much more bandwidth – I was sorta forced to go with $15 after buying the ipad, one day in and I’m at 150 mb lol ouch

also can’t wait for sharing plans :D

  11. Errr correction I’m at 180 mb – I only had my iPad for like 9 hours

My battery outlasts the plan – obviously I’m pushing hard because I just got the device but 250 mb seems not even enough for just a casual user – for reference I used my iPhone like a maniac and only maybe once or twice went past 300 mb (10 gb in 2 years)

250 mb is something maybe a traveller could use methinks

    • RogersKeith says: May 29th, 2010 a 3:54pm

Hey Mike. The $15 plan will be enough for many customers but others will want to sign up for $35 plan. The good news is the plans are stacked so if you use up your 250 in 15 days you can start another bucket with no overage fees.

  12. Well it looks like Fido has jumped on the iPad bandwagon, showing iPad in their Sales System, or it could be that they are getting ready for the new iPhone

  13. Thanks for the info on the SIM.

I picked one up at Best Buy and tried to suggest that it should be free – apparently they are saying that it is only free with an iPad otherwise it’s 9.99. Knowing that it was a .20 add on when I mistakenly forgot to select it from Apple.com it seems like a price gouge.

The Best Buy sales person half jokingly said “nothing here is free, we won’t let you leave without giving us some of your money” – very funny.

Getting these into the Rogers locations would help eliminate the opportunistic middle men.

  14. Greetings, just wondering about international plans – am I to underhand that one can get a Verizon or A&T& micro sim then activate using a credit card? I know this is not a Rogers issue but I travel 60% of the time and need to have a way to get the iPad working with no roaming. Singapore, Seoul, NY and Paris are key to me…

    • RogersKeith says: May 30th, 2010 a 11:36am

Hey Marcc, As the micro SIMs are not locked to the devices, I believe that should work.

  15. What about international plans. I am planning on buying an ipad this week but I travel to the U.S. Without a plan it is useless. Can I get a plan from AT&T.

  16. Hi Keith,
I got my IPAD yesterday from Future Shop and the salesperson did not mention or offer a microsim to me, even though I bought the wifi + 3G model.

This morning I went to the Apple Store and I was given a Micro Sim (for free!) and was told exactly what to do. They were very helpful and unbiased towards my carrier choice. My only question before I activate is – I do not want automatic renewal on my credit card.

    How can I avoid that?

    Thanks again.

    • RogersKeith says: May 30th, 2010 a 11:35am

Hey Mustafa – follow the “cancel plan” steps above to ensure that your credit card isn’t automatically charged. This is all part of the innovative on-device activation system that Rogers offers.

  17. I will not be buying an ipad until I see Rogers data sharing plan options. Thanks for keeping us informed.

  18. Another vote for the data sharing plan with a cost of $10.

I have an iPhone with the 6Gb plan, and my wife has a Rocket Stick with the flex plan. We both want iPads but are going to wait and see if a data sharing plan comes out. $10 for data sharing would be a reasonable price. Anything more and we will probably get the wifi only model; or the G3 so that we can use it when travelling.

  19. I like the stackable data plan. A pretty good solution for a new product with out a lot of usage history available. the 250 mb plan is fairly useless for anyone that uses the internet for more than reading emai;ls and checking facebook but the stacking data makes an overage just a wakeup call for the piggish nature of modern web use.

In fact, I like the stackable data plan so much, I want the option as an add on to my already too small iPhone 6 gig plan. Considering that I end up paying about $50 if I use an additional Gig above my included plan, and I have a 3 year contract following a 3 year contract, yet anyone can have this data plan on a month to month basis with no commitment whatsoever…..

Let’s just say it strikes me as absurd that for me to use 10 gigs of wireless data through my iPhone data plan, with the largest data plan available, I would need to pay $235.
That same amount of data on the same 3g technology would only cost $70 for the iPad.

Now, I get that the ipad is an unsubsidized device. The subsidy is why I enter into a 3 year contract. This subsidy is payed back based upon a minimum voice and data package. I have no problem with a minimum package over 3 years to justify my device subsidy.
What I do have a problem with is that I can not purchase an additional data bucket on top of the data included in my plan. I am GOUGED at $.05 per MB
Why is this pricing not available as an optional add on for long time Rogers customers?

To sum up: I pay $51.20 per gigabyte after I reach my 6 gig limit.
After a contract free customer passes their 5Gig limit, they pay $35 for another 5 gigs, an affordable and reasonable $7 dollars per Gig.

Why do I pay over 700% more for additional data above my plan?
Over the life of my contract, if I use 10 gigs per months, I will pay$8460 for data usage alone.
My phone bill will add up to over $11,500
An ipad owner will pay $2520 for the same data in the same 36 months.

This needs to be addressed. The subsidy issue as an explanation for the price of data does not hold water here. As a holder of a 3 year contract I expect access to the best prices Rogers offers. You don’t offer better Voice plan prices contract free, now do you?
Prepaid minutes are absurdly priced. Rogers needs to harmonize this. Doing the math tells me that I will save thousands of dollars on 3g data use by canceling my contract and just go month to month on data and get my voice service from another carrier.

Sure, maybe today very few users want, or need this much 3g data. I can guarantee this will be changing quickly. With the exponential drop in cost of implementing each new generation of wireless data, wireless internet will replace wired internet for most users. offering these services at good rates will greatly speed adoption. Punitive pricing for contract customers is not a great practice.

    • RogersKeith says: May 30th, 2010 a 11:32am

Thanks Ganon. More than 90% of the North America wireless market involves contracts and subsidized handset prices. In markets where many more customers routinely pay full price for the device, carriers frequently offer differential pricing. As iPad is not sold, subsidized or serviced by the carrier we are able to offer a different pricing model.

      • Please consider offering the new iPhone unsubsidized and allowing users to add the $35-for-5GB plan.

…and before you reply with “these new plans are specific to the iPad”, please take a moment and think about ways to make the Rogers launch of the iPhone HD a home run, and not the foul ball created by the iPad launch snafu.

      • He RogersKeith,

I have a brand new unlocked carrier independent North-amrican frequency compatible Nokia E series HSDAPphone that I just picked up at full cost from a Nokia Store. Since it is not a subsidized phone can I walk into a Rogers store and pick up a SIM card to have the same data plan on this phone as the IPad (35$ per 5 GB no contract) ?

From a technical point of view this is just another network endpoint device just like and IPAD. Care to explain the logic why do I need to pay different rate for much less data and forced to sign up for a monthly data plan for this device while the IPad not ?

        • Also awaiting an explanation. I won’t hold my breath though.

        • Because they can.

That their bandwidth cost/gb is relatively fixed doesn’t mean they won’t charge as much as they can for it depending on what device you are accessing it from.

          • We are painfully aware that Rogers can do what it wants. What we are hoping for is an attempt by Rogers to rationalize that which does not appear to be rationalizable.

  20. @RogersKeith: I’m very glad to hear Rogers is considering shared data plans. As a 6gb iPhone plan holder, this would make lots of sense to me, and I would finally get the value from my plan…after 2 years. It would also increase my customer loyalty, and likely move 3 other cell phones from Telus to Rogers when those contracts are up…not to share the data, but because a shared data plan would show Rogers listens to it’s customers.

I also think a shared plan would reduce the instances of people jailbreaking their phones.

    • RogersKeith says: May 30th, 2010 a 11:29am

Thanks for your thoughts on sharing Grant. We have nothing to announce at this time, but will share more when we can.
