Extreme Text Messaging: Copy and forward and block, oh my!

extreme text messagingI use my smartphone to text more than I use it to make phone calls. I text my friends to coordinate plans and I’ve even exchanged a few text messages with my mom.

New research released today conducted for Rogers by Harris/Decima finds that 65 per cent of text messaging users want to do more with their text messaging services.

Indeed, texting is a super fast and easy way to communicate, but it’s also been a pretty basic service. Until now.

Starting immediately, Rogers customers can take text messaging to the next level with our new Extreme Text Messaging service, a first in North America.

Extreme Text Messaging lets you block unwanted texts, set up an auto-reply message and easily send a text to a distribution list, to name but a few cool new features.

Best of all, Extreme Text Messaging is available at no additional cost for any Rogers postpaid or prepaid wireless customer — whether you are using text messaging on a pay-per-use basis, part of your plan or as an add-on.

Features and benefits:

  • Text Blocker: Have an ex you’d rather not hear from? Getting spam messages? You can now add any phone number to a blocker list and stop receiving messages from that number.   The owner of the number won’t even know they’ve been blocked
  • Text Auto Reply: If you’re away on vacation or not checking messages, you can set up this feature to send an auto-reply message to anyone who sends you a text
  • Distribution lists: Quickly message your family or a group of friends all at once without having to add each recipient to the message one by one.
  • Text Copy: Want to send a copy of any text message you receive to your computer so you can see your text messages while you email? Need a written backup of your text messages? Have a copy of your text messages automatically sent to an email address or another wireless phone number.
  • Text Forward: No more carrying around a personal and work phone on the weekend. Have all your text messages automatically forwarded to another phone number, just like call forwarding.
  • Personal Signature: Add some fun to your text messages by creating a personal signature or message that will automatically be included at the end of any text you send.

Standard text messaging rates apply for each person on a distribution list and for any copy, forward, or auto-reply text message sent. For additional details, please go to www.rogers.com/extremetext.

How to manage Extreme Text Messaging:
Visit the My Account section of Rogers Mobile Internet Portal at www.rogers.mobi and click on Extreme Text Messaging under Manage My Services. Or, text “XTREME” to 4716 to be sent a URL to access the setup page for all features.  iPhone and Android customers will need to browse to www.rogers.com/m/extremetext to access the set-up page.

Text messaging plans:
Rogers has a variety of text messaging plans and options to help you get the most out of your text messaging. Click here for more information about our text messaging add-on options.

Do you use text messaging regularly? If so, how many text messages do you send a month? And, what do you think of the new functionality?

  1. you should include this in the rogers app for android

    • RogersMary says: May 20th, 2010 a 4:57pm

Thanks for your comment, Ryan. You’ll be happy to know that it’s coming soon!

      Stay tuned :)

  2. So … basically this is like email. Way to innovate, Rogers.

    • RogersMary says: May 20th, 2010 a 5:24pm

Hi Jens, nice to see you again.

We’re providing customers with the best possible user experience for the service they prefer to use most.

      Take care!

  3. This is already in the iPhone app from rogers. Most I won’t use, but the copy to email is a pretty nice feature to have.

  4. You should be able to set this up by logging into MyRogers and accessing Wireless the same way you can add numbers to your My5 list. I do not have a data plan or text mesaging plan and have no intention of purchasing either. But it would be nice to use the MyRogers to be able to block text messages from being received. I resent being charged for text messages received that I have no control over or for text messages Rogers claims I have received but never did.

    • Blocks can be placed on your account for several functions (such as international calling, data or, in your case, sending and/or recieving text messages) if you don’t wish to use them. Just call the customer service line and they can put it on for you no problem.

  5. Not impressed by this at all. If you have a BlackBerry the OS allows you to do the majority of these features to begin with. Hey Rogers, how about giving your customers an unlimited data package option like these other upstarts are offering. That would be revolutionary.

  6. @ Kaj. How much data do you use? I get 150-200 emails a day reply to most, surf the web, send pics…. Basicly I am sending and receiving data all day, and I am NEVER even close to my 500 mb plan. So what would I or 99.9 percent of people do with unlimited data.
UNLIMITED is a great marketing word, but it is not needed in real life or in business. I do want to thank you for repeating the same stupid comment we read on every tech site in Canada.

    • @ Bob, I kindly disagree with you sir, It’s pretty impressive that you get around 150-200 emails a day, you either must be a very busy business man or just very popular, but emails are hardly the culprit of 3G bandwidth usage on Smart-phones. You obviously don’t use your device for internet tethering with your laptop when you are away from Wifi hotspots and the office. Or how about listening to your favorite internet radio station while driving to work? (do you have any idea how much data that consumes?) or how about making international calls using a voip app over 3G? you most likely do not use any of those features on your smartphone, because if you did, than you’ll appreciate the value and piece of mind of this useless…”marketing word” that is UNLIMITED data.
Not everyone uses their phone and data plan the same way you do, you shall only speak for yourself. :)

  7. Would that increase your text message count ( for both sender and recipient* ) ie. A person sends 160 character sms message + a preset signature.

This would turn out to be two threaded SMS ?

    * those having a text plan is fine, but those doesn’t have a text plan would have cost them 30 cents to receive?

    • RogersMiranda says: May 26th, 2010 a 1:20pm

      Hey Tom,

There is actually logic built into the service to remove the signature (it drops) if there is no room remaining in the message to support it.

For example: If you type a message with 150 characters, plus a signature with 15 characters =165 characters. Instead of sending two messages, the 150 character message will be sent but no signature will be attached.

      Hope this helps!

  8. For me, this is useless. The only text messages I receive are spam from Rogers.

  9. I have an unlimited email plan on my Blackberry (only use Wi-Fi for browsing) — why doesnt this “extreme” work without a data connection? I can use 5 email accounts, blackberry messenger, regular text messaging plus Google Talk, MSN, Yahoo Messenger all no problem without data and wifi, but this doesnt work? wth?

    • RogersMiranda says: May 31st, 2010 a 3:54pm

      Hi Bruce,

To enable Extreme Text Messaging, you require a data connection in order to authenticate your account. Extreme Text Messaging is enabled through MyAccount and MyAccount is not supported by WiFi.

With a WiFi connection, there is no way to authenticate a specific user so that is why Extreme Text Messaging capabilities only work with a data connection.

      Sorry for the confusion.

      • @RogersMiranda is there any way you can ask the app developer to change the app to not work on wifi at all. I know there is a way to make apps not work on 3G, just wondering if there is a way to force an app to not work on wifi. It’s a little annoying to have to go to settings and turn off wifi whenever I want to use the app.

      • Hello RogersMiranda

I am not so clear on somethign here with Extreme Text Messaging.
I have a Rogers “Value Pack” for Text. meaning I don’t have unlimited texting. I have allowance of 2500 Text messages per month (sent) I set up my Extreme T.M. to the “COPY” feature, every single text message I send and receive a Copy of it is send to my email’s inbox.. I read the terms, but I still wasn’t sure about how it works, so every ONE Text I (160 characters or less) I send am I getting charged for 2 text messages? since one of it is going to my email inbox? and every time I receive a text message I’m being charged as one text message? So Let’s just say this Month I sent 500 text messages and received 400…will my monthly statement show that I used 1400 text messages? Can you please clarify this for me thanks.

        • RogersMiranda says: June 1st, 2010 a 1:53pm

          Hi Soni,

For the Text Copy feature, each message copied to another wireless number or email will be taken out of your text plan/add-on or you will be charged the standard text message rate for each message copied.

So your assumption above is correct. If you sent 500 text messages and received 400 and you have Text Copy enabled, that means that your statement will show 1,400 messages total.

          Hope this helps.

          • Oh CRAP!! Glad I found this out now instead of later!! There should be a disclaimer!

          • Thanks for Verifying this for me, I think it’s a terrible feature for people with limited text messaging plans ( people with quotas) it only makes sense to have this feature if you have an unlimited text plan…otherwise you can easily multiply your text messaging cost/use three fold by just simply having this feature on, even with a hefty 2500 texts a month, I am still not comfortable having this feature on.

  10. when I access http://www.rogers.com/m/extremetext there’s a link that say ‘iPhone App Available’. The link is broken… it doesn’t work.
Also when searching for the Rogers App in the App Store it isn’t there.

  11. i have an i phone i have tried texting 4716 with xtreme to rogers and that does not work, have also tried the http://www.rogers.com/m/extremetext link that was provided but that did not work either. help :) how do i add extreme text to my i phone, what am i doing wrong

    • Download the app that I have linked to a couple of time already. Click on the services icon at the bottom. Click on the Extreme Text Messaging box on that screen. Here you can control the settings of the service.

    • RogersMiranda says: June 9th, 2010 a 10:01am

      Sounds strange Sam.

Try going to your browser and typing in the URL: http://www.rogers.mobi

Under My Account, you can either click “More” or scroll to the very bottom and click “My Account”

Under My Services, the first option will be “Extreme Text Messaging.” Click on this and follow the instructions to set up the different options.

      Hope this helps.

  12. I’m loving the text copy feature! But is there a way for the emails to include the contact name in the subject, instead of just the number?

    • RogersMiranda says: June 11th, 2010 a 4:19pm

      Hi Teresa,

No. It does not look like this feature is available at the moment. However, I’ve passed your request onto the team so I’ll let you know if there’s an update.

  13. I have this set up to forward from phone A to phone B – and it works, but when the messages arrive on phone B, they say they’re from phone A rather than from the original sender. Which makes it impossible to reply to the message or even to know who sent it to you.

Surely this is not the right behaviour.

    • PS. for what it’s worth, I’m forwarding from a Rogers phone to an AT&T phone, and the text messages show up on the AT&T phone as being from my Rogers phone, rather than from the original sender.

    • RogersMiranda says: June 14th, 2010 a 1:53pm

      Hi Steve,

I looked into this for you and it does not look like this feature is available at the moment. However, it is an enhancement that we are recommending we add in the future.

      • Thanks for checking, RogersMiranda. just to be clear – the “feature” of knowing who the text message is actually from is something you are considering adding?

That seems like a pretty important “feature” to leave out of the initial launch of this product.

If I use the “Text Copy” feature instead to have the text message sent as email, instead of “Text Forward”, will I see who the message is from?

        • RogersMiranda says: June 14th, 2010 a 2:39pm

Using the text copy feature will display the phone number the message was sent from, not the person’s name. See my above response to Teresa. She asked the same question.

I’ve passed this feedback onto the team as a few people have asked about this. Will let you know if there’s an update in the future.

  14. My mistake, I was using “Copy” rather than “Forward”. Will do some more experiments to see what if anything I can do to identify the sender of the original sms.

    • Modest experiment complete. if I use “Copy” to copy a text message to another cell number, I get the message but no indication who it was from. Completely useless.

But if I use “Copy” to send to an email address, I get an email that contains the sender’s phone number. That’s slightly better, but I have to go figure out who that number corresponds to, and needless to say it is no longer delivered as a text message.

Both of these options need some work to make them useful.

  15. IF i have a BB unlimited text plan, but no data plan , how do i setup the copy option . I wish to copy all texts to that BB to my email for archival. It is not an option on wifi nor an option in the web control panel .

IF it is not something I can do with extreme text, how can this be achieved then ?

    • RogersMiranda says: June 18th, 2010 a 4:14pm

      Hi Chris,

To enable Extreme Text Messaging, you require a data connection in order to authenticate your account. Extreme Text Messaging is enabled through MyAccount and My Account is not supported by WiFi.

As a workaround option you can purhcase a “Data Day Pass” at a one time fee for one day and access Extreme Text Messaging via your mobile browser. You will have data access for one day, you could set up Text Copy and it should work going forward. You would not need another Day Pass unless you wanted to make additional changes or configuration to the Extreme features.

For more info on the Data Day pass, go to http://www.rogers.com/datadaypass

  16. My Rogers app doesn’t work and the website won’t. How else can I set this up? I tried the text and the few links on the page but still won’t load any of it

    • Did you make sure you had wifi turned off and you were connected via 3G only? If not the Rogers app won’t work.

  17. Ya I did. It keeps telling me to try again later.. For the last few days
