Citytv launches first-of-its-kind video iPad app
I don’t know about you, but I can’t always catch my favourite TV shows when they air. But now, I can watch them on-to-go with the recently launched Citytv iPad app – the number one application download on iTunes as of 12:40 pm today.
It’s Canada’s first primetime video iPad app featuring shows from Citytv’s primetime broadcast schedule like Modern Family, 30 Rock, and Cougar Town along with CityLine and Breakfast Television Toronto live between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Monday-Friday. The best part? It’s free!
What’s Does it Do?
The app gives Citytv fans the ability to catch up on full-length programs from Citytv’s lineup. It also includes a number of convenient features:
- Notification Service – Never miss an episode again! Set this feature up to be reminded when your favourite shows are available on the app and when new shows are airing on TV
- Viewing History – Can’t remember if you already watched last week’s episode of Fringe? This feature tracks your viewing history so you’ll never waste your time with repeats.
- Sharing – Share video links on Facebook, Twitter and email
How do I get it?
On your iPad, search “Citytv” from the App Store (www.itunes.ca/appstore). Download the app and start watching.
To see the app in action, check out the following video from CityNews featuring Andrea Gagliardi, Citytv’s general manager, TV web.
For more information, you can check out the FAQs on Citytv’s website.

So when is this coming to iPhone and Android?
Hi Jeremy,
We have no additional details to share at this time about launching on other platforms, but stay tuned. :)
I was skeptical when I saw it on the App Store – but the app is actually incredibly useful for catching shows on-demand!
Rogers – you guys should contact whichever company developed that app for CityTV and get them to build you a Rogers On Demand version with your online content for iPad users :-)
Hey Will,
Thanks for your comment and the suggestion. Glad you’re finding the app useful.
Cool, hopefully this app will become available for more Rogers devices in the future =)
I saw this on Breakfast Television this morning and thought it was really cool and couldn’t wait to try it out on the iPhone…. but then I realized it was only for iPad =(
Hopefully it comes to iPhone soon I’d love to continue watching BT as well as catch up on other CityTV shows on the way to work in the mornings.
Very cool Rogers, keep pumping these out and I will be able to cancel my Cable, but will have to up my Internet package due to all the streaming content
Too bad the app doesn’t work. I’ve not been able to watch a complete show without getting the “unable to load video” error. 108 1 star ratings and generally negative reviews on the App Store. Sorry Rogers, kinda blew this one. No response from tech support either.
Hi Geoff,
We had a known issue with the “unable to load video” error but on Friday it was fixed, so it should be working fine for you now.
Don’t get that error anymore but the app still hangs on the commercials. (another error noted a bunch of folks posting reviews on iTunes). Tech support hasn’t responded and I notice that now the tech support email in the app doesn’t work.
Getting closer? It’s too bad, as it’s a fantastic idea tripped up by poor execution.
Thanks for the heads up Geoff. Passed this on to the team that works on the app.
I’m right with Geoff on this… if you’re going to launch an innovative and ‘future forward’ technology, you MUST make sure it meets the users’ standards before throwing it into the market. Users, customers, humans, are getting really tired of ignoring ads and commercials in order to get to content. A new business model must be found in order to keep business moving, and customers happy. With forums like this, twitter, facebook and using the Internet in general, the public has a much louder voice.
